The incidence of hydrometeorological disasters, including flooding, is relatively high. Flood events may be influenced by factors such as rainfall intensity, regional topographic conditions, and the lack of preparedness among students in facing flood disasters. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen students’ knowledge and attitudes regarding flood preparedness. This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes of students aged 10–12 years and their preparedness for flood disasters at SDN 1 Tugu, Kebumen. This research employed a quantitative descriptive approach with a cross-sectional study design. The study involved 70 students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument used was a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using logistic regression with a 95% confidence level and a significance value of p < 0.05. The results showed a significant association between students’ attitudes—after being controlled for knowledge—and their flood preparedness (p < 0.001; PR = 8.51; 95% CI: 1.95–11.45). The attitudes of elementary school students were found to influence their disaster preparedness, and improving students’ knowledge is essential to enhance their attitudes toward disaster preparedness in the school setting. Collaboration between schools and the local Regional Disaster Management Agency or volunteer organizations is recommended to strengthen disaster preparedness efforts.

Abstract

The economic and social imbalance is influenced by the uneven increase in population migration across various regions. This has led to the development of informal settlements, such as the Kebayoran Lama scavenger village. These locations have altered the city's urban landscape and impacted livelihoods, particularly health. The primary occupations in this village are scavengers and garbage collectors. This encourages the provision of public health services including free medical treatment. Interviews with village leaders to obtain primary data, while secondary data were obtained from interviews with the community. Then a qualitative method was used. Attended by 110 people. Then a qualitative method was used. Attended by 110 people, consisting of 60 men and 50 women. The results of this activity found that many people experienced itching (28.1%), flu (20.2%), flu with fever (13.3%), fever (21.1%), flu with cough (9.6%). The people who participated in free treatment were more men (52.6%) compared to women (43.9%), furthermore the average age of the people who participated in free treatment was 37 years. This explains the need to increase community service efforts by providing education on clean and healthy living behaviors to improve the quality of life related to health conditions from environmental problems.
