Abstract

Introduction/Main Objectives: The development of information and communication technology (ICT) and small and micro enterprises (SMEs) can encourage regional economic growth. Background Problems: Studies on the impact of ICT on the rural economy at the village level are very limited. Furthermore, the Indonesian study neglects to tackle the endogeneity issue associated with this variable and the indirect effects of ICT on the regional economy. Novelty: Using SMEs as a mediator, this study examines the impact of ICT (internet signal strength) on the village's local economy (nighttime light), both directly and indirectly. ICT is considered to be endogenous. Research Methods: This study employs causal mediation analysis in instrumental-variable (IV) regressions at the village level in 2018 and 2021, using lightning strike intensity as IV. Finding/Results: Internet signal strength can increase the number of SMEs, and this increase can positively and significantly impact the local economy. In addition, the direct impact of internet signal strength on the local economy is significantly negative. However, the total impact of internet signal strength is significantly positive.

Abstract

The footwear industry is distinguished by its manual assembly line and a high proportion of shared workstation configuration. This study focuses on a subset of the single row facility layout problem known as the paired single row facility layout problem. As one of type of single-row facility layout, the paired single row facility layout problem cannot be solved quickly. Further, different objectives also need to be considered in the decision-making process. Therefore, multi-objective approaches are proposed to minimize the penalty of material handler usage while maximizing the adjacency function based on each workstation's closeness rating. A Single Row Facility Layout is an NP-hard problem; this problem also belongs to the NP-hard problem class. As a result, we propose a hybrid method combining variable neighborhood search (VNS) and genetic algorithm (GA) to solve the problem of obtaining the optimal configuration of a multi-objective paired single-row assembly line. A heuristic approach was used to create the schematic representation solution. To obtain the neighborhood solutions, a hybrid VNSGA was used. The schematic representation solution employs crossover and variable neighborhood descent. Using the concept of VNS, the neighborhood was changed in each generation.

Abstract

This research aims to improve the efficiency of the canting tool used in the Batik-making process in Giriloyo Village. One of the main issues identified is the suboptimal size of the canting spout, which causes wax blockages due to dirt particles. This study employs TRIZ tools, including Function Analysis, to identify problems, develop innovative solutions to the issues, and develop solutions that address contradictions in the canting system. The analysis results indicate that several inventive principles, such as Merging, Beforehand Cushioning, Segmentation, and Feedback, can enhance the canting tool's performance. Proposed solutions include adding a heater, filter, flow regulator, and interchangeable canting spouts to meet different needs. These solutions can accelerate the Batik-making process, reduce production costs, and enhance market competitiveness. However, further verification is required to validate the proposed design's superiority over traditional canting tools. This research opens opportunities for further development in Batik tool innovations to enhance the sustainability of the Batik creative industry in Indonesia.

Abstract

Aim: Waste sorting at-source is vital for sustainable waste management and the circular economy in Indonesia. Despite regulations, community programs, and digital interventions, sorting remains limited. This study explores self-reported sorting behaviors among urban residents and examines how waste banks may enhance participation. Methodology and results: We surveyed 220 respondents from Indonesian major cities and applied Two-Step Cluster Analysis and chi-square tests to assess links between sorting behavior, socio-demographics, and waste bank participation. The main barriers were lack of space and time. The 57 respondents with access to a waste bank, only 14 were members; 43 were uninterested, often citing inconvenience. Active members were positive about the possibility of automation technologies, including automated sorting and collection, weighing machines for pricing, and digital payments. Many also suggested a mobile app to track deposits. Conclusions, Significance, and Impact: Technological innovations paired with incentives potentially reduce participation barriers. Integrating digital and automated solutions with behavioral insights may help overcome current limitations and foster a more effective circular economy in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study proposes the hybridization of tabu search (TS) and variable neighbourhood descent (VND) for solving the Inventory Routing Problems with Stochastic Demand and Time Windows (IRPSDTW). Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) is among the most used approaches for managing supply chains comprising multiple stakeholders, and implementing VMI require addressing the Inventory Routing Problem (IRP). Considering practical constraints related to demand uncertainty and time constraint, the proposed model combines multi-item replenishment schedules with unknown demand to arrange delivery paths, where the actual demand amount is only known upon arrival at a customer location with a time limit. The proposed method starts from the initial solution that considers the time windows and uses the TS method to solve the problem. As an extension, the VND is conducted to jump the solution from its local optimal. The results show that the proposed method can solve the IRPSDTW, especially for uniformly distributed customer locations.

Abstract

Urban centers worldwide are grappling with complex waste management challenges, including efficient collection, transportation, processing, and an over-reliance on landfills. A promising approach to mitigate these issues lies in bolstering public participation in waste separation, which could significantly improve recycling efforts. To effectively encourage this practice, it is crucial to understand the underlying factors that motivate community engagement in waste segregation activities. This study utilizes the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Norm Activation Model to identify and analyze determinants influencing individuals' propensity to separate waste in the sampling area of Balikpapan City, Indonesia. Balikpapan, one of the cities in Indonesia, is currently facing several distinct challenges related to waste management. Through the empirical validation of eight hypotheses, it becomes apparent that the presence of market facilitators (H3) and the influence of past behavior (H5) play pivotal roles in shaping the intention to engage in waste separation. The findings suggest that providing accessible, well-maintained market facilities and initiatives designed to enrich the public's waste separation experience are essential strategies. Implementing these strategies could significantly improve waste separation practices within specific urban contexts such as Balikpapan, Indonesia, and other cities facing similar environmental management challenges.
