Abstract

Binocular light microscopy (BLM) is an excellent match for a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a trinocular light microscope equipped with a micrometer (TLM). The practicality, user-friendliness, and short-time analysis of BLM make this method a good choice for spicule analysis. However, its effectiveness and accuracy are yet to be confirmed. This study aimed to validate the effectiveness of BLM by comparing its usefulness to both TLM and the gold standard methods. BLM was first subjected to measuring megascleres and microscleres of 2 sponges. Then, by using the If function built-in Excell and t-test in SPSS 16.0, the compatibility of BLM was evaluated against SEM by measuring the length of spicules from 4 Sangihe sponges and their counterpart species from different locations. Furthermore, the t-test analysis was used to validate the compatibility and effectiveness of our method to the TLM by measuring the spicules of four sponges. Both the F-function and the t-test analysis proved BLM was compatible with SEM with both measurements showing a perfect match for megascleres typed spicules of 4 compared sponges. This new technique also showed a perfect match with SEM (p = 0.367, t-test) and with TLM (p = 0.963, t-test). Keywords: Spicules, sponges, SEM, Wallacea, biomaterial, sponge taxonomy

Abstract

Stunting prevention by providing knowledge to women, prospective mothers, and mothers is one way to prevent the risk of stunting early on. Education can be given to community-based preventative and promotive care (Posyandu) cadres as the smallest unit of health care for mothers and children. Posyandu cadres of Bulo Village were the purpose of this service activity. The purpose of the service was to provide stunting prevention education to Posyandu cadres of Bulo Village. The activity stages included the team conducting a survey to find out the level of education and age of the Posyandu cadres; then the team conducted education by providing material on the 10 steps to prevent stunting. The results of the service activities showed an increase in knowledge of Posyandu cadres from 53% to 87% after being given material on stunting prevention. It is recommended to educate Posyandu cadres regularly so that awareness about the importance of preventing stunting continues to increase

Abstract

Abstract

Bungalawang Village, located in Tabukan Tengah District, Sangihe Islands, and tilapia is one of the types of fish that is commonly cultivated. Tilapia has economic value, fast growth, and good reproduction. In addition to tilapia, several other freshwater fish species are cultivated, including pomfret, catfish, and eel. Bungalawang Village has the potential to developing land cultivation businesses, and tilapia is the primary choice for the community. Demand for consumption, especially tilapia, is increasing daily, but the availability of seeds and fish for consumption remains a challenge and constraint. Therefore, fish farmers in Bungalawang Village are striving to improve freshwater fish cultivation. As a K3 is an effort to create a workplace that is safe, healthy and free from environmental pollution so that it can reduce or be free from work accidents and thus increase work productivity. Biosecurity is all actions, procedures and policies to prevent the entry and spread of pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites in fish production facilities for hatchery, rearing and maintaining fish. The community service program of excellence aims to assist fish farmers in Bungalawang village in implementing of occupational health and safety (K3) and biosecurity in freshwater fish cultivation. The objectives PMUP can are achieved through education and training of K3 and biosecurity implementation, water management and quality, selecting superior seeds and broodstock, and controlling fish pests and diseases.
