Abstract

ABSTRACT The vocabulary in the domain of traditional Javanese weapons, specifically dhapur or the form of a keris, is part of a distinctive and structured local knowledge system. This study aims to describe the paradigmatic semantic relations among the vocabulary of dhapur keris from the Paguyuban Megalamat Tuban collection and to explain the hyponym-hypernym structures formed within it. A qualitative-descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through direct observation of keris collections and terminology documentation from the community. A total of 34 dhapur keris terms were compiled, consisting of 13 straight keris forms and 21 luk (curved) forms. The data were analyzed using paradigmatic semantic relation theory and componential analysis to uncover the semantic relationships among the vocabulary within one lexical field. Dhapur vocabulary was mapped as a hypernym that encompasses keris shape terms as hyponyms. Each hyponym occupies a more specific semantic position within the lexical hierarchy. The results reveal a fixed, systematic, and exclusive semantic structure in the cultural context of Javanese keris. This study concludes that dhapur vocabulary reflects the conceptual system of Javanese society and holds potential for further development in cultural linguistic studies and the preservation of traditional terminology.

Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are critical for 21st-century learners, yet their development is often hindered by rote-based instructional practices, especially in Javanese language subject. This study aimed to improve the HOTS of 10th-grade students through the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in wayang text instruction. Conducted as Classroom Action Research (CAR) at SMAN 13 Surabaya, the study involved 36 students from class X-2 over two action cycles. Each cycle followed Kemmis and McTaggart’s model: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through observation, interviews, HOTS-based written tests, and project documentation. Results revealed a significant improvement in students’ HOTS, with post-test scores increasing from an average of 64.7 to 68.4, and the percentage of students reaching the minimum mastery level rising from 32% to 47%. Students also exhibited more active participation, stronger analytical skills, and enhanced creativity in completing their projects. The PjBL model enabled students to critically engage with wayang texts, connect them to real-life contexts, and strengthen Javanese cultural literacy. These findings affirm the relevance and effectiveness of PjBL in enhancing HOTS, supporting the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

Presupposition in descriptive utterances functions as an effective linguistic strategy for subtly instilling philosophical and theological assumptions, as manifested in the contemporary song "Ingsun" by Sujiwo Tejo. This study aims to examine the forms and functions of presupposition that construct the concept of Kawula-Gusti (Servant-God relationship) in the song's lyrics, and to analyze its relevance as Javanese language teaching material in Junior High Schools. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques utilizing listening and note-taking, based on the synthesis of presupposition theories by Stalnaker, Karttunen, and Yule, combined with Austin's locutionary acts and Keraf’s descriptive theory. The findings indicate that the lyrics are dominated by lexical and existential presuppositions which implicitly instill a profound understanding of Dununge (Position), Kuwasane (Authority), and Nuju Gambuhe (Union) of the Kawula-Gusti. The descriptive utterances require the listener's cognitive accommodation to accept theological truths as background facts without rigid indoctrination. These findings have strong pedagogical relevance for Javanese Language learning at the JHS Phase D level within the Merdeka Curriculum framework, particularly for training students' interpretive abilities toward implicit meaning and strengthening character based on the Pancasila Student Profile. However, acknowledging that the reliance on a single culturally and theologically dense text limits generalizability across diverse learner backgrounds, this study recommends extending the analytical framework to multiple Javanese texts of varying genres and difficulty levels to ensure broader applicability and instructional flexibility.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program aims to strengthen the cultural identity of the Indonesian archipelago among Indonesian migrant children in Malaysia through storytelling training based on Javanese folk tales. The activity was conducted at the Indonesian School in Johor Bahru (SIJB) using a participatory, culture-literacy-based approach. The main media consisted of two storybooks adapted from the Si Kancil Nyolong Timun storybook, compiled in two languages (Javanese and Indonesian) and featuring contextual illustrations. Through interactive storytelling training, cultural value discussions, and teacher mentoring, this activity showed a significant increase in students' cultural knowledge, ability to understand moral values, and pride in their native culture. This article shows that fairy tales are an effective medium for character education and cultural preservation within the Indonesian diaspora.
