Abstract

This study examines the intricate interrelationship between tradition, economic necessity, and physical health among women potters in Pagerjurang, Indonesia, who utilize a distinctive tilted pottery wheel technique. A mixed-methods approach, including ethnographic and the nordic body map questionnaire, was employed in order to investigate the impact of this traditional practice on the sitting posture and musculoskeletal issue of the potters. The study reveals that deeply entrenched social norms have shaped the evolution of pottery-making techniques, resulting in the design of perbot miring, a tilted pottery wheel that has become central to the Pagerjurang community's cultural identity and economic sustainability. Despite the reported physical discomfort, practice persists due to its cultural significance and economic importance. While initial observations suggested potential correlations between age, years of work, and physical complaints, statistical analysis showed weak, non-significant relationships. This research provides a foundation for future studies on ergonomic interventions that could preserve cultural practices while addressing physical health concerns in traditional pottery making in Pagerjurang.

Abstract

The use of Virtual Reality as a representation of biophilic design has been commonly used for design evaluations on human perception and performance before the actual construction. Biophilic design is known for the relaxing effects on human physiological responses; particularly cardiac activity indexed by Heart Rate Variability (HRV), representing human’s relaxation or stress conditions. How virtual biophilic design affects HRV, and what research protocols are most effective in assessing these physiological effects remains unclear. This literature review clarify research protocols and outline the trends of HRV in virtual biophilic design and to propose guidelines for improving the accuracy and reliability of HRV measurements. Most of the reviewed studies found an equal trend of the increased parasympathetic activity correlating with a reduced anxiety, during exposure to specific virtual biophilic designs. Studies with insignificant HRV effects may be due to the inadequate measurement protocol. The clearer effects on HRV may be observed by limiting virtual exposure to 15 minutes, avoiding virtual sickness, maintaining consistent subject positions, incorporating paced breathing in all conditions during HRV recordings, and evaluating short-term HRV measures for a minimum of 5 minutes. Virtual biophilic exposure holds promise for pre-construction design assessment, depending on appropriate methodologies.

Abstract

This research investigates postural risks faced by batik stamp workers at Batik Komar Bandung, employing Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) to assess worker ergonomics. While batik holds immense cultural value, there is a lack of ergonomic research focusing on the well-being of workers in traditional batik production. The case study at Batik Komar Bandung involved 11 workers aged between 20 to 50 years, where work activities were documented through video and photographs, followed by HTA task analysis and REBA postural risk assessment. The findings reveal that the stamping stage, which constitutes 86.85% of the process, presents significant ergonomic risks, with a REBA score of 10 indicating high postural risk. Workers frequently use a ±1.1 kg stamp while maintaining bent postures for prolonged periods, contributing to potential musculoskeletal disorders. These findings underscore the urgent need for ergonomic interventions within the batik industry. The study proposes potential solutions, including workstation redesign, tool modification, and the implementation of regular rest periods to mitigate health risks. By addressing the ergonomic challenges in traditional batik production, this research highlights the importance of worker well-being and sustainability in the batik industry. Additionally, the study demonstrates the practical application of HTA and REBA in identifying postural risks and formulating effective interventions, contributing valuable insights to the growing field of ergonomic research in cultural industries.

Abstract

Sound is one of the important elements in forming the impression and experience of space. In the context of the library as a social space, the sounds that come from the various activities of space users then enrich the library's acoustic environment. This study aims to evaluate the effect of subjective perception of audial soundscape on the formation of a sense of place in public libraries using a descriptive quantitative qualitative method through observation, recording, and distributing questionnaires using an accidental sampling method. The Public Collection Room and Co-working Space at the Bandung City Archive and Library Services (Disarpus Bandung) were chosen as research objects considering the character of the space and the context of the library. The results of data analysis show that sound objects in the natural sound category are preferred by respondents and have a positive correlation with sense of place in both spaces of Public Collection Room and Lobby. Some sound objects from the category of human activity such as conversations and footsteps have a positive correlation, while chair squeaks and children's voices have a negative correlation. There are differences in preferences for several sound objects that follow the function of the room, such as the sound of keyboard/mouse typing is preferred in the Lobby, while the sound of turning book pages is preferred in the Public Collection Room. Layout and openings also affect exposure to traffic noise, which is significantly negatively correlated in the Lobby, but not in the General Collection Room. The character of the soundscape in the Bandung Disarpus Library as a social space creates positive associations between users and places through comfort, conductivity, and social interaction. These factors are created through the soundscape as well as forming a sense of place following the function of space.

Abstract

Adaptasi konsep library as a social place kian menjadi tren ditengah pesatnya perkembangan teknologi dan gaya belajar kolaboratif.
