Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify and interpret the values of character education in a folklore entitled Abu Nawir. Character education is an effort to help the growth and development of the inner and outer souls of the younger generation from their innate characteristics towards a society full of compassion. Reflections of character education values contained in folklore are used as "train carriages" that can lead the younger generation of Indonesia to a better future. Today, there are many cases of moral decline. This is because the younger generation is unable to filter the negative influence of social media in the current technological era. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. This study uses research data in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The data source in this study comes from the Abu Nawir story text. The reading and note-taking technique is the data collection technique used. The interactive technique is the data analysis technique used, namely reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The findings of this study show that there are nine values of character education, namely discipline, hard work, democracy, independence, curiosity, social concern, friendship or communicative, love of peace, and responsibility.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of intercultural communication and the practice of religious moderation within the Muslim Papuan community in Sorong City, Southwest Papua. As a region rich in ethnic and cultural diversity, Sorong serves as a complex site of social interaction between Muslim Papuans and other societal groups, including both migrants and local non-Muslims. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving community leaders, religious figures, and Muslim Papuan residents. The findings reveal that intercultural communication within this community occurs adaptively and dialogically, characterized by tolerance, mutual respect for religious symbols, and the use of both local languages and Indonesian in fostering social relations. Meanwhile, religious moderation is reflected in a contextual understanding of Islam. The study affirms that the Muslim Papuan community in Sorong plays a vital role in maintaining social harmony and reinforcing intergroup cohesion through inclusive communication and a moderate religious outlook. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of intercultural communication models and the strengthening of religious moderation in multicultural regions of Indonesia. Nonetheless, the research is limited by its geographical focus on Sorong and a relatively small sample size, restricting the generalizability of the results. The implications suggest the need for policy frameworks that integrate local wisdom and dialogical approaches to enhance intercultural and interfaith harmony, particularly in highly diverse settings.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid and reliable instrument for assessing scientific writing skills using an inquiry-based approach to local wisdom dilemma stories. A Design and Development method, based on the Ellis & Levy model, was adopted. The method consisted of six steps: (a) issues; (b) goal setting; (c) model design and development; (d) model testing; (e) model evaluation of the test findings; and (f) application model. Two hundred seventy-three high school students from three Indonesian schools were recruited as the pilot sample. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants. Five experts evaluated the instrument's validity. The Aiken formula for content validity proof yielded a respectable score of 0.86. According to the measurement model reliability evaluation, the instrument is in the dependable category, which comprises Composite Reliability with a value of 0.89. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation value to be 0.043 < 0.08 and the Goodness of Fit Index to be 0.98 > 0, 90 or the declared model by the data obtained in the field and can be used in a wide range of measurements. The findings of this study have important implications for educational assessment and instructional design. Developing a valid and reliable instrument to measure scientific writing skills through an inquiry-based approach using local wisdom dilemma stories provides educators with a culturally relevant and pedagogically sound tool. This instrument can support more accurate evaluations of students' writing competencies and foster critical thinking and contextual understanding in scientific writing instruction at the high school level.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of English use in Indonesian television advertisements, specifically analyzing the brand Kopi Good Day through a sociolinguistic approach. As globalization influences marketing strategies, the incorporation of foreign languages, particularly English, has become prevalent in Indonesia. While prior research has examined the effectiveness of foreign language advertising, there is a notable gap in understanding how this practice impacts local cultural values and consumer perceptions within Indonesia's multilingual context. The purpose of this study is to explore how attitudes and cultural identity among Indonesian audiences aged 18-35 are influenced by the use of the English language. To this effect, the present research has adopted a qualitative approach because it involves content analysis of selected Kopi Good Day advertisements and indepth interviews with around 20 to 30 individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds. The initial results show that 60% of the respondents believe that the use of the English language association makes the brand sound modern; while 30% are of the view that such an association will in due course undermine the cultural values at the local level. Another 70% said this would make the product more attractive and trendy for a younger audience, but 20% find it confusing since not everyone understands English very well. These findings testify to the greater complication in the interrelationship of global branding and local identity and point to the need for sensitivity on the part of advertisers to such dynamics. In this case, this study contributes to developing culturally sensitive advertising strategies that resonate with diverse consumer demographics in Indonesia, providing insights into how foreign language use in advertising can reflect and shape cultural identity in a rapidly globalizing society.
