Abstract

Cavities or caries are diseases of the hard tissue of the teeth. The presence of caries must not be ignored and must be treated because carious lesions can spread and result in pain, tooth loss, and infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. This community service activity aims to increase public awareness of dental and oral health through curative efforts and evaluation of the clinical picture after indirect pulp capping treatment at the State Agricultural Development Vocational School, Ikurkoto Health Center Area, Padang City. The method used in this service begins with patient screening, pulp capping treatment, and evaluation in the form of subjective and objective examinations 1 week after treatment. Participants in the activity were 403 patients who came from around the Ikurkoto Community Health Center area. This activity found that cavities were more common in the back (posterior) teeth, especially the lower molars, as much as 80%, compared to the front (anterior) teeth, as much as 20%. The material used is a bioactive material, namely Glass Ionomer Cement (SIK) type 2 with different brands, namely Fuji II LC (type II aesthetic) 70% and Fuji IX (type II reinforced) 30%. The evaluation results after treatment showed that as many as 71% of dental patients were asymptomatic and responded well to pulp capping treatment.

Abstract

Treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances can pose various risks, especially increasing plaque accumulation. Green tea (Ca-mellia sinensis) which is one of the natural alternatives that can be used to inhibit dental plaque formation, contains catechins, flavonoids and tannins as antibacterial Streptococcus mutans which is the agent of dental plaque formation. This article discus-ses the difference in orthodontic plaque index (OPI) scores before and after rinsing with green tea brewing (GTB) in fixed ortho-dontic users. Experimental research with a one-group pretest-posttest design using research subjects namely preclinical stu-dents of Baiturrahmah University Faculty of Dentistry class 2022 and 2023 who used fixed orthodontics according to the inclu-sion criteria totalling 40 people. Data collection according to the examination of OPI score before and after gargling with GTB. Data analysis showed a significance value of p=0.000 (p<0.05) which indicated that there was a difference in OPI scores be-fore and after gargling, which decreased from 41.75% to 23.94%. It was concluded that gargling with GTB can reduce the OPI score of fixed orthodontic users.

Abstract

Background: Elderly  is one of the phases in human life. There are several changes in body and organ function, one of which is a decrease in oral cavity function such as decreased saliva production. Decreased salivary secretion will cause poor oral conditions. One way to prevent this is by doing facial exercises. Facial exercises can stimulate salivary secretion and oral functionMethod: Quasi experimental research method with one group pre test post test design. The sampling technique used Purposive sampling with a total sample of 78 samples where the subject spat saliva 2 times before facial exercise, then performed facial exercise, the subject fasted for one hour and the subject was asked to spit saliva again 2 times.Result: The results of this study were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test. The gender of the respondents was mostly female as many as 68 people (86.1%), while male respondents were 11 people (13.9%), the average age of respondents in this study was 65 years old with the most respondents aged 68 years, the average salivary secretion before facial exercise 1.11 ml and the average after facial exercise 1.62 ml the results of statistical analysis of significance p value 0.001 (p < 0.05) showed a significant difference between the amount of salivary secretion before and after doing facial exercise. Conclusion: The   conclusion  of   this   study  is   that   facial  exercise  has an  effect on  increasing the  amount of salivary secretion in elderly.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis is a chronic infection of periodontal tissues caused by interplay between periodontopatogen bacterial and the immune system. In periodontitis condition, inflammatory cells are found in large numbers and will release proinflammatory cytokines. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) is one of a class of drugs used in periodontitis cases treatment. However, long treatment using NSAIDs may give side effects such as gastrointestinal disorder. Ambon banana peel (Musa paradisiaca L),a medicinal plant contains flavanoid, alkonoid, tanin and saponin which has anti-inflammatory effect due to its ability in inhibiting inflammatory cell migration. This research aimed to study the effect of the Ambon banana peel extract as an antiinflammation on the number of inflammatory cells infiltration in the periodontitis induced rats. Methods : This research uses experimental laboratory with Post Test Only Control Group Design. Silk ligature was placed in subgingival areas at the lower anterior teeth of male Wistar rats for 14 days to induce periodontitis. After 14 days, the ligation was released and the rats from each group were administered orally either with 25%, 50% concentrations extract and aquades (control negative). The rats were then decapitated 1, 5 and 7 days after the treatment. The serially sections were stained with hematoxylin eosin to examine the number of inflammatory cell infiltration. Results :Two-way Anova showed significant differences (p <0.05) among groups, indicating that Ambon banana peel extract affected the number of neutrofil cells infiltration. Conclusion: There is an effect of Ambon banana peel (Musa paradisiaca L) extract to reduce inflammatory cells infiltration.
