Abstract

Abstract: Kampung Romantic is one of the urban villages in Malang City which currently transforms to be a village with special interest. One of the potentials in Kampung Romantis is the decorative-plant tour and business developed by its residents. This potential can be utilized to strengthen the character of the village that upholds good relations between neighbors and families. Reviewing the standard of a tourism village, Kampung Romantis is still far from the existing standard due to a lack of adequate facilities and infrastructure. However, its location is strategic as located in the middle of the city and near shopping centers, educational and heritage areas. Considering its strategic location and the high interest of the residents in developing their village, it is important to brand the area of this village visually. An effort was made through this service program through the signage design for a logo of Kampung Romantis which can strengthen the image of that area. The stages of the service program started from observation and communication with the residents, then planning and construction for the signage design. This program had successfully produced a signage design that was constructed to brand the area of Kampung Romantis by involving the residents. Abstract

Residential houses such as flats located near industrial areas are vulnerable to the threat of high-intensity dust, thereby, exposing the occupants to Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) in the form of health problems, especially in the upper respiratory system. Therefore, this research was conducted to find appropriate design solutions to minimize dust from entering buildings through the application of geometric planes as a form of defense. It is also important to note that dust is closely related to the direction of the wind which is its conveying medium. This led to the determination of the right geometric shape to be applied as a dust barrier in the building facade. Moreover, this research was based on the force-based framework which proposes a form-refine-assembly stage consisting of several methods to determine the shape through simulation and evaluation associated with existing theories. The results were able to determine the position and shape of the facade area to serve as the barrier to the arrival of dust. The design is expected to be integrated into the shape and landscape layout of buildings to reduce dust in the site area.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has a direct impact on conservation institutions such as zoos. Although the Surabaya Zoo is now recovering along with the decline in cases, it requires a resilience strategy to face the threat of similar zoonotic diseases in the future. These threats have a negative impact not only on humans, but also on the welfare of the animals. This research looks at biosecurity as a form of risk management and problem prevention. Isolation, circulation systems, and waste treatment technology are the most important biosecurity components for zoos. The method begins by examining the biosecurity strategies implemented and planned by zoo associations around the world. The results of the analysis were then implemented at the Surabaya Zoo. It is necessary to analyze design elements in zoos such as entrances, circulations, and animal enclosures that still do not meet the concept of biosecurity. The study's findings include the implementation of a biosecurity strategy at the Surabaya Zoo from an architectural standpoint, a circulation system devoted to entry/exit access, and the provision of service areas that can be accommodated in one zone of Service Facilities. Also, noise mapping simulation shows that it is necessary to reduce noise in the facilities.

Abstract

Parametric modelling has been regarded as a prospective skill both in architectural education and practice. It offers capabilities for designers to instantly generate numerous design options and create complex geometries, which can enhance the design creativity. Realizing its potential and capabilities, this study investigates how parametric modelling can be practiced in early architectural education for improving students’ creativity and design skill. The findings of this study are based on the observation of the parametric modelling workshop participated by 150 first-year architecture students in Indonesia. It is concluded that parametric modelling can be feasibly practiced by first-year students as a medium to enhance design creativity. Additionally, parametric modelling can improve students’ design intuition in some respects, that can smooth the design skill development in architectural learning. The lessons for the effective parametric design learning were also discussed in this study, including metaphorical thinking in parametric exploration, active communication between student and lecturer, and emphasis on the inspirational tool.

Abstract

The coastal ecosystem provides biodiversity that is attractive for exploration and essential to support global life systems. However, these areas have become increasingly vulnerable due to climate change and human activities. Therefore, infrastructure development in coastal regions must prioritize sustainable practices to protect these ecosystems. This paper explores the potential of Restorative Environment Design (RED) in coastal zones, synthesizing fundamental principles from Attention Restoration Theory (ART), sustainable coastal infrastructure management, and multisensory human experiences in coastal environments. The study develops a design framework integrating three dimensions: (1) Identifying coastal management strategies, including habitat restoration, soft engineering, and eco-engineering; (2) Assessing multisensory properties and experiences of coastal zones; and (3) Applying the core components of restorative environments, including being away, fascination, extent, and compatibility. This study also presents a conceptual model for RED implementation in coastal zones based on the proposed design framework. The conceptual model illustrates how zoning strategies, guided by fundamental principles, can address ecological restoration while enhancing human well-being through restorative design. The results of this study ultimately provide insights for designing coastal spaces that promote mental recovery, community engagement, and long-term ecological sustainability.
