Abstract

The Community Hall is a vital public space for the community, serving not only as a venue for government activities but also as a hub for educational, recreational, and interactive events. To better support community harmony, the Community Hall in Surabaya’s residential areas should be designed to be functional, comfortable, and aesthetically appealing. Architectural expertise plays a key role in creating an attractive, contextually appropriate design. This community service project focused on the architectural design process for the Community Hall in Medokan Asri Barat, Surabaya. The process included consultation, site analysis, architectural exploration, presentation, and design development. The design incorporates neo-vernacular architecture, blending traditional Indonesian elements with modern touches. The result received positive feedback from the community. A participatory design approach involving local residents was essential in creating a design that aligns with their preferences and needs. This collaborative effort ensures that the Community Hall is both functional and meaningful to the community it serves.

Abstract

The relationship between green spaces and humans has long been recognized as one of the important aspects of life, especially in urban contexts. In urban environments, green spaces are often found in public areas, serving as places for recreation, sports, and social interaction, as well as helping to reduce pollution and noise. One common form of public space in Indonesia is the mosque, which not only functions as a place of worship but also plays an important role as a center for social, cultural, and educational activities. If a mosque provides green space, it can positively impact urban well-being. The aim of this research is to understand the role of green spaces in mosques in enhancing social interaction and human physical activity. The literature study method was used to collect and analyze previously published information related to the topic. Another method used is field observation with a behavior mapping approach to record and analyze social interactions and physical activities occurring in the green spaces of three mosques with different green space conditions over a certain period of time. The results of the study show that there are longer durations of social interactions and physical activities such as communicating, relaxing, playing, and worshiping in mosques with green spaces compared to those without green spaces. Thus, it is concluded that green spaces in mosques can be optimized as places for social interaction and physical activity, providing numerous benefits to the community, including improved physical and mental health and an overall enhanced quality of life.

Abstract

Duplitecture has become a captivating trend in Indonesia tourism. Duplitecture refers to the imitation or duplication of a popular architectural object that is intentionally built in a different place to enhance the tourist attraction within an area. Duplitecture usually adopts iconic architectural objects from foreign countries or those already globally famous. The trend of duplitecture invites debate because on one hand, it can be seen as plagiarism, but it can also be appreciated for its tourist appeal. This study examines the implementation of duplitecture in public spaces in downtown areas with a case study of Payung Madinah in Pasuruan City, East Java, mimicking the design of the Umbrellas of Al-Masjid An-Nabawi in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The aim is to investigate the important influences that limit or encourage the development of the duplitecture trend. Literature review was conducted in this research to discuss the duplitecture trend from various perspectives. Qualitative methods through field observation and interview were also applied to see the impact of the object existence. The study results show that the Payung Madinah in Pasuruan City has successfully become a positively impactful duplitecture object appreciated by the community. In addition to its unique shape, the object can provide functional space and offer new experiences to visitors in the downtown area. Its presence is strengthened by the religious tourism area around it, thus creating mutually beneficial benefits for the community, the image of the area, and its own existence.

Abstract

Neuroarchitecture is an approach that integrates neuroscientific knowledge with architectural design principles to create built environments that will support the well-being and productivity of its inhabitants. This paper debates primary concepts of neuroarchitecture – including its history and the four pillars of human well-being  that it carries with it – as well as its implications for designing futuristic workplaces supporting the mental health and creativity of Gen Z. It finally presents the psychological characteristics of Gen Z and its workplaces’ challenges  to emphasize the design’s need to focus on users’ emotional and biological aspects. As an empirical review, several real-case studies  are analyzed, such as Amazon Spheres in Seattle, Second Home Hollywood, Mr.Green’s Office in Brazil, applying neuroarchitecture principles, including natural lighting, biophilia elements, and space flexibility. Study results demonstrate that a concrete neuroarchitecture application can significantly enhance the comfort, collaboration, and innovation, resulting in Gen Z performance and mental health. This paper concludes that designing future workplaces for Gen Z will require a holistic approach, combining the excellence of technology with neuroscientific care for users.

Abstract

Variations in interior elements, such as colour, lighting, spatial scale, and exhibition layout, can create distinct spatial atmospheres that influence how visitors perceive and behave in gallery settings. This study investigates the relationship between interior spatial qualities and visitor movement in the Indonesian National Gallery. Employing a qualitative observational approach, the research involved direct documentation of visitor paths, time spent in each room, types of activities, and spatial preferences. Eight gallery rooms were evaluated based on observable interior characteristics, including ceiling and wall colours, lighting contrast, spatial layout, and display arrangement. The findings reveal that certain interior qualities, such as smooth lighting contrast, open circulation, and balanced display arrangements, encourage more extended stays and interactive behaviors like lingering and photography. In contrast, high visual contrast, clustered displays, or enclosed layouts may prompt visitors to move more quickly through the space. This study also demonstrates the value of combining qualitative spatial judgments with behavioural observations to explore how design elements influence visitor experience. While exploratory, the method provides a framework for further research in evaluating gallery design to create more engaging and emotionally resonant spatial experiences.

Abstract

Tourism potential is not only present because of the right planning but can also come suddenly (sudden tourism). This condition is what happened in the Jabon - Sidoarjo area. The Sidoarjo mud disaster that has occurred since 2006 has resulted in several regional tourism potentials, some of which have developed. The effort to develop tourism potential based on locality requires harmony between the residential environment that has been formed and the tourist attractions that have recently emerged. This research was conducted on the acces road heading to Tlocor Marine Tourism. The method used in this research is a descriptive analityc method with a focus on the access legibility. This method is used to observe and analyze district development patterns by local government regulations that are synchronized with access legibility theory. The results showed that tourism potential must be supported by physical and non-physical aspects. For this reason, a strategy is needed to elaborate between the tourism potential that emerged later with the settlements and cultural spaces that emerged later.

Abstract

Natural lighting plays a significant role in human life, particularly in terms of energy efficiency, physical health, and mental well-being. In the context of architectural design, natural lighting helps create warm, cheerful, and comfortable spaces, enhances aesthetics, and encourages people to stay longer. In cafés, natural lighting is essential for establishing a pleasant atmosphere that supports both social interaction and productivity. This study employs a qualitative approach and behavioral mapping to examine the influence of natural lighting on seating preferences among café visitors in Indonesia, with a specific focus on Jiakopi ATAS Café in Surabaya. This café, frequently visited by young people and professionals, is known for its modern, eco-friendly design that maximizes the use of natural light. The study investigates how natural lighting at Jiakopi ATAS affects visitors’ seating choices. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights for building and café owners or designers in creating environments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also support the comfort and productivity of their users.
