Abstract

In an urban environment, heat and noise are the most important factors affecting the environment in buildings. This study optimizes the WWR (Window to Wall Ratio) as a compromise of the ventilation design and noise control for the Javanese architecture which is the case study of Eco-tropical built environment. The need for openings area has a contradictory behavior between providing the maximum aperture requirements for the wind flow and the minimum aperture area to reduce environmental noise. The location of this study is in the lowland (Surabaya, 0-50 m above mean sea level) and in the highland (Malang, 440-667 m above mean sea level) as the representatives of the tropical environment. Both cities were chosen because of their cultural and architectural similarities. The results of this study indicate that the WWR range of integration of ventilation design needs and noise control are for lowland / daytime is 0.13-100% (survey standard), 0.13-5.24% (WHO standard); for lowland / night is 0-100% (survey standard) and 0-3.24% (WHO standard). Meanwhile, for highland / daytime, the requirement is 0.24-100% (survey standard) and 0.24-70.48% (WHO standard); and for highland / night is 0-100% (for both WHO standard and survey criteria).

Abstract

Phenomenology in architecture is associated with perception between the subject and the space, which one of the studies includes multisensory experience. In general, contemporary architecture accentuates the visual experience, among other sensory modalities. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research about the exploration of multisensory perception in architectural design. This study aims to explore how sensory activities or blind and visual impaired experience the spatial and the elements of architecture. This study is started by examining a brief literature review and then conducts qualitative research (in-depth interview and participant observation) to explore sensory experience and perception of blind people. The result finds from the five elements, walls and windows are the most influential elements for blind people. The existence of a wall has the potential to be a wayfinding of haptic system and has an echo effect. While the aperture opening element influences the illumination of light as well as indicators of outside space limits. The research outcome shows that people with visual impairment also acknowledge and they recognize these principles of design. They recognize contrast of temperature through the opening element, rhythm of texture through the wall, surface balance through the furniture, and hierarchy of noise through the window.

Abstract

Designing government working space is proposed to solve the productivity issues among the workers inside the city hall office building of Banjarbaru city in South Borneo. This caused either by their work span inside the office and the style of working cubical or the interior element which has colonialsm values. The design of the building case is using the colonial style which is this building’s materials have color dominated with white colour and the architecture elements are containing a heritage value. Therefore, in this paper discuss the literature review to make a design srtategies for working space inside the office with building heritage’s values that suitable to maximizing the productivity of the workers by involving them in the process of design in advance, for instance, the design process will use a participatory design paradigm that will be reviewed before applicate it in the Banjarbaru government office design proposal. From those theories can be concluded that field area like shape, colors, and perception of space which related to an interior element can be controlled to maximizing the productivity and preserving the values of building heritage.

Abstract

The double-loaded circulation system makes the performance of cross ventilation in apartment buildings to be ineffective. Therefore, the alternative of the ventilation system is necessary to be examined in order to obtain an adequate velocity comfort. To determine the appropriate alternatives, we need to discover the suitable software. In this study, a validation of a simulation method using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is carried out to determine whether the software is capable to provide useful analysis for high-rise apartments. Based on the results, the validation of the correlation value (R²) between the measurement and simulation is 0.67. It shows that the influence between variables is sufficient.

Abstract

In urban areas like Jakarta, the rapid urbanization increases the high level of housing needs that leads to the emergence of slums. The way the governments solve this problem is seen as inhumane and not viable at all. The solution proposed by the government actually creates new slum problems. The objective of this project is to upgrade the riverbank slum into a green settlement with improved housing by implementing six principles of Green Architecture into the design. Field measurement and interview were conducted to obtain data for simulation using Ecotect Analysis and ANSYS Fluent software. The result emphasized that "respect for user" has a major role in achieving compatibility between user and environment.

Abstract

The existence of dust in a building environment can cause many problems for those who continually exposed, especially for residential housing which is located near the industrial area. There are so many kinds of dust included PM10 in which it can make upper respiratory tract infection. So, it needs a treatment process for reducing the dust intensity, one of the ways is through exploring the surface. In this paper highlighted about literature review for knowing the element surfaces that related to the way for reducing dust. Therefore, in this stage is needed for searching the surface elements that can be used in the next design process. The result of this review is the selection of building shape can help in controlling dust spread such as in courtyard typology. After that, it should consider with tilt angle of the surface in order to dust cannot be trapped and the position of surface from the direction of wind. The surface should have a minimum opening regarding to standard so that the view should face to the area where is not exposed by dust and air exchange can use shaft ventilation or hidden gap in the wall for helping to air flow.

Abstract

Abstract

The Indonesian archipelago has typical traditional dwelling richness on every island. In island city, Bawean, the wind effect becomes very critical to the identification of environmental adaptation of its dwelling. The aim of this study was to identify the adaptation characteristics of traditional dwelling to the environmental archipelago condition of Bawean island. In this study, two main dwellings as references are the traditional houses, Bangsal or Limas and Barn, Durung. Generally, this research involves two major steps as follows: (1) Identification and specification phase (field observations, measurements) of the characteristics of building performance, (2) Simulation phase of the thermal performance of traditional house (using Ecotect Analysis and CFD Programs). This results highlighted that the houses performance is not optimum, both in spreads and compact orders. Meanwhile, Durung has better performance, only 17% of the samples are in discomfort condition (spread or compact). The optimum condition is achieved when the settlement spread out, otherwise uncomfortable when it is in the dense environment. The houses in daytime conditions are in the discomfort conditions and lower cooling load, while the night-time conditions are in the quadrant of optimum conditions, comfort, and low cooling load.
