Abstract

This research is focused on fostering students’ critical thinking through Project-Based Learning. It is based on the findings of the previous studies which show that University students in Batam mostly  still have low quality of Critical Thinking. The design of the research was quasi-experimental research that want to find out the effect of Project Based Learning towards Criical Thinking of University students in Batam. To know students’Critical Thinking, this research uses Critical Thinking test. There are three pre tests and post tests. The pre-test were used to see students’ Critical Thinking before having treatment and posttest are used to see the differences on students critical thinking after giving treatments.The subjects were the students of English Department of Putera Batam University who took Speaking class. The data found that Project Based Learning has a significant effect on students' Critical Thinking skills. This conclusion can be seen based on the analysis that has been done where t observed > t table. t observed = 3,83 and t table 2.36 with standard significant 0,05.Thus, it can be concluded that Criticak thinking skills can be increased by using Project Based Learning method.Keyword: Empowering, Project Based Learning, Critical Thinking,University Students.MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN CRITICAL THINKING MAHASISWA DENGAN MENERAPKAN PROJECT BASED LEARNINGAbstrakPenelitian ini difokuskan pada pengembangan Critical Thinking mahasiswa melalui metode Pembelajaran Project Based Learning. Hal ini didasarkan pada temuan penelitian sebelumnya yang menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa Universitas di Batam sebagian besar masih memiliki Critical Thinking yang rendah. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuasi-eksperimental yang ingin mengetahui pegaruh pembelajaran Project Based Learning terhadap Criical Thinking mahasiswa di Batam. Untuk mengetahui kemampuan Critical Thinking mahasiswa, penelitian ini menggunakan tes Critical Thinking. Melalui tiga kali pre tes dan pos test. Pre-test digunakan untuk melihat kemampuan Critical Thinking sebelum menjalani perlakuan dan posttest digunakan untuk melihat perbedaan skor Critical Thinking pada mahasiswa setelah diberikan perlakuan. Subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa dari Jurusan Sastra Inggris Universitas Putera Batam yang mengambil kelas Speaking. Data yang ditemukan menunjukan bahwa Project Based Learning memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan Critical Thinking mahasiswa. Kesimpulan ini dapat dilihat berdasarkan analisis yang telah dilakukan dimana t tabel ˂ t yang observed. t observed = 3,83 dan t tabel 2,36 dengan standar signifikan 0,05. Jadi, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan Critical Thinking dapat ditingkatkan dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran Project Based Learning.Kata Kunci: Meningkatkan,Project Based Learning,Critical Thinking,Mahasiswa

Abstract

This research is about the development of ICT-based Project Based Learning Approach towards English instructional materials of high schools’ students in Batam. The purpose of this study is to produce the English student modul grade X with project-based learning (PjBL) approach which based on ICT. This research includes the study of R & D (Research and Development). This study aims to determine the effect of the use of the product (modul) to the students’ communictive competence. The method of this research is a research and development. The Population was students of Grade X SMAN 1 Batam. The results of this study revealed that the modul of PjBL with ICT was valid. It is proved by the result of t test. It found that  t score is higher than t tabel where t tabel is 1,670 and t score is 2, 3547 with significance degree 5 %. It means that there are differences score between control class and experiment class. Thus, it can be concluded that the development of ICT-based Project Based Learning Approach towards English instructional materials of SMA students in Batam is a valid and efective  product becouse it is proved by the increasing of student’s communicative competence.Keyword: Project Based Learning, ICT, Communicative CompetencePENGEMBANGAN BAHAN AJAR BAHASA INGGRIS BERORIENTASI PROJECT BASED LEARNING BERBASIS ICTAbstrakPenelitian ini membahas tentang pengembangan Pendekatan Pembelajaran Project Based Learning (PjBl) berbasis ICT terhadap bahan ajar bahasa Inggris untuk siswa-siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas di Batam. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menghasilkan modul Bahasa Inggris kelas X dengan pendekatan pembelajaran proyek (PjBL) yang berbasis pada ICT. Penelitian ini berjenis R&D (Penelitian dan Pengembangan). Penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan produk (modul) terhadap kompetensi komunikatif siswa. Metode penelitian ini adalah penelitian dan pengembangan. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X SMAN 1 Batam. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa modul PjBL yang berbasis ICT valid. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan hasil uji t. Nilai t hitung lebih tinggi dari t tabel dimana t tabel sebesar 1. 670 dan t skor adalah 2, 3547 dengan tingkat signifikansi 5%. Artinya ada perbedaan skor antara kelas kontrol dan kelas eksperimen. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa pengembangan Pendekatan Pembelajaran Berbasis Proyek (PjBl) berbasis ICT terhadap materi ajar bahasa Inggris siswa SMA di Batam merupakan produk yang valid dan efektif, karena terbukti dengan meningkatnya kompetensi komunikatif siswa.Keyword: Project Based Learning, ICT, Kompetensi komunikatif

Abstract

This research is based on the teaching online experience where the learning process becomes less interactive and the atmosphere during online learning was monotonous. By seeing the fact, the researcher  is interested to apply an application that seem appropriate to help the students to improve their writing ability in online learning called Answer Garden. The purpose of this research is to solve the problems faced by lecturers who teach writing in universities in Batam. Answer Garden is a new minimalistic feedback tool used to stimulate real-time student participation, online brainstorming, and obtain classroom feedback. The research applied the qualitative research by using observation sheet, field notes, and questionnaire. The results showed that using Answer Garden as Brainstorming activity in online learning gives a good result where students are motivated by the concept because allowing them to generate lists, phrases, thoughts, words, ideas, or questions about a topic of writing in interactive ways. Thus, Answer Garden was seen as a great application to promote student participation during the online learning, because it can involve students brainstorming and collaborating on a topic question that the teacher asked during the online learning.

Abstract

English Skill is the most important nowadays so that this skill must be learned starting from the young age. Unfortunately, the 2013 curriculum has shown that English subject is only the internal component which is only the optional subject in an elementary school. In fact, seeing the era development, English has become the obligatory need for every level of education included Elementary school. As Li stated that the language acquisition is more effective before puberty because the human brain is is still flexible to learn many languages (Li, 2014). It means that the elementary students must have been introduced to English language. The government of Batam is aware of the importance of learning English for the elementary school students because Batam as one of the big trading cities in Indonesia must prepare the human resources which are able to speak English. However, there are many English teachers are still lack of English pedagogical competencies and for recruiting some new ones need extra budgets that can not be realized sooner. The best solution for this situation is to train the incompetent English teachers so that they are able to teach English to the elementary school competently (Post,2017). This idea has inspired the team of community service to train the elementary school teachers in Sagulung region to be the pedagogical competency of English teachers.The train has been responded by the the teachers positively and expected to be continued regularly in the future.

Abstract

Being a housewife is a multi-tasking tasks and it is not an easy thing. In this case, a housewife has many roles such as should be a mother , a counselor for her daughter as well as taking care of everything. Besides, the mother is also a teacher. As we know that, the first teacher of a child is a mother. Then, the mother is also a financial manager and general administration at home. Many problems have been encountered, so a housewife tasks are very hard, in this case they have to harmonize and regulate the amount of income and increase in some basic needs and daily needs. Except the problems that regarding with financial management, the problem face also relates with the lack of knowledge of housewives in English. As a housewife needs an ability of English skill to help their children in studying later on. Those phenomenon happens in families who live in Griya Batu Aji stage 1.The solution offered housewife that a family financial management is very important for financial survival of a family. As a financial manager at home, a housewife must be able to manage expenditure and income posts. Besides, for teaching English, parents should implement a fun learning environment and learning strategies that can motivate children to learn English. A learning environment that suits the real-world context is needed so that parents can apply it to everyday learning activities with children.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to look for a significant influence on the application of using Wattpad as learning activities on students' ability to write descriptive texts. The main consideration is because an educator in this case should used interesting instructional media, particularly to teach writing so that the potential of students can be developed optimally. Meanwhile the development of writing of English Department Students of Putera Batam University is still relatively low in quality. Wattpad is an applications which provides the students an opportunity to write, promote and help their writing reach acroos the world. The design of the research was quasi-experimental research that want to find out the effect of using Wattpad towards students writing ability. To know students’ writing ability, this research uses writing test as Instrument. There are three pre tests and post tests. The pre-test were used to see students writing ability before having treatment and posttest are used to see the differences on students writing ability after giving treatments. The subjects were the students of English Department of Putera Batam University who took writing class. The data found that using Wattpad has a significant effect on student’s writing ability. This conclusion can be seen based on the analysis that has been done where the obtained Z score was smaller than critical value, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Hi) was accepted. So, based on the results , it was concluded that there was statistically diffrence between the pre-test and post-test score at the 0.05 levels. It means that teaching writing by using wattpad gives significant effect on students’ writing ability

Abstract

At present, the ability to write scientifically becomes an important skill mastered by students. Students need to have good writing skills using reasoning and logic that focuses on what must be believed or done based on mechanisms, such as doing conceptual analysis and arguments for problem solving and decision making. The concept of semantic mapping is an effective strategy to improve student writing skills. This study explores the effectiveness of the concept of semantic mapping in the development of students' writing skills in essay writing. This study was classified into a quasi-experimental design. In this study the population is students of Universal Batam University who are registered in the 2018-2019 academic year. The instrument of this research is a writing test. Data were analyzed with several analyzes, namely normality testing, homogeneity testing, and hypothesis testing. In testing the research hypothesis, the researcher used the t-test for the related sample and the Wilcoxon test. Based on the analysis it was found that the average score of students in the pre test was 7.89 and the average score of the students in the post test was 12. T-score count is t = 3.83 and a significant standard of 0.05. While t table is only 2,306. Because t count is greater than t table (tobserved> t table), so the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted. So, based on these results, it was concluded that there was a statistical difference between the pre-test at the 0.05 level. This means that learning argumentative writing based on the theory of semantic mapping has a significant influence on students' argumentative writing skills.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to analyze the type and reason of address terms in WhatsApp group of Putera Batam University Justice League (2017) movie. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The research used observational method non-participatory technique to collect the data. The data was analyzed by applying the theory of Wardaugh (2010). The results found that the type of address terms were 8 data in first name (FN) in Man, Alfred, Diana, Barry, Howard, Silas, Bruce, Victor, 2 data in last name (LN) in Allen, Lane, 2 data in title (T) in Queen, Soldiers, 1 data in title plus last name (TLN) in Ms. Prince, 4 data in pet name (PN) in Aquaman, Batman, Cyborg, Superman and 3 data in kinship term (KT) in Dad, Mother, Child. The research also found the reasons of address term with 12 data in intimacy in Ma, Children, Diana, Man, Victor, Arthur, Barry, Alfred, guys, Bruce, Mom, Superman, 5 data in power differential in Mr. Wilson, Master Wayne, ma'am, insects, Luthor and 3 data in equality in Clark, Steppenwolf and Kal-El. Based on the results, it can be concluded that first name (FN) is the most found type of address term and intimacy is the most in reason of address term.

Abstract

Abstrak: Menurunnya minat membaca di kalangan English is an international language, so that the application of English covers all aspects of people's lives, especially in a company. The application of English can be seen in the company PT. Mandom Indonesia Batam, where some staff in certain parts such as frontliners, receptionists, ambassadors, and marketing must be able to use English because they are serving as reception guests both locally and internationally.  Becouse of the importance of the role of English in PT. Mandom Batam  Indonesia in interacting with guests, the workers there should be given  the training in the application of the principles of cooperation and greetings in English (address forms). So that, they can create a positive impression while working.It can be important becouse Indonesian is  famous for their modesty. cooperative principle).This is based on the theory of Grice in Crabtree (2003) that in communicating every speaker and speaker must be able to understand the four principles of cooperation in communication, among others, quality maxim, quantity maxim, maximance relevance and manner maxim. The training uses the lecture method and direct interaction with the training participants with interactive practice techniques on the material regarding the principles of communication cooperation (address forms.) From this service results can be seen increasing the understanding and skills of workers at PT Mandom Indonesia Batam on the principle of cooperation and greetings in English Keywords: English Competence, Frontliner, Address form Abstrak: Bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa Internasional sehingga penerapan bahasa inggris meliputi semua aspek kehidupan masyarakat terutama di sebuah perusahaan. Penerapan bahasa inggris dapat terlihat pada perusahaan PT. Mandom Indonesia Batam, dimana sebagian staff pada bagian tertentu seperti front liner, receptionist, ambassador, dan marketing harus mampu menggunakan bahasa inggris karna bertugas sebagai penerima tamu baik lokal maupun internasional. Melihat akan pentingnya peranan bahasa Inggris di PT. Mandom Indonesia Batam di dalam berinteraksi kepada tamu maka perlu kiranya diberikan pelatihan bagi perkerja  di dalam penerapan prinsip kerjasama dan sapaan dalam bahasa Inggris (address forms) agar dapat menimbulkan kesan yang positif dari tamu asing terhadap sikap pekerja lokal yang terkenal dengan kesopanannya.Prinsip kerjasama (cooperative principle) ini didasari pada teori Grice di (Crabtree, 2013) bahwa di dalam berkomunikasi setiap penutur dan tertutur harus dapat memahami empat prinsip kerjasama di dalam berkomunikasi antara lain, quality maxim, quantity maxim,relevance maxim dan manner maxim. Pelatihan menggunakan metode ceramah dan interaksi langsung terhadap peserta pelatihan dengan teknik interactive practice terhadap materi mengenai prinsip kerjasama komunikasi dan (address forms.) Abstract

In communicating, speaking with the public requires sense, how we speak well, with our speech it will provide special data for the listener, the ability to liven up the atmosphere will be good if we have good communication skills. So that the objectives that we will convey will be achieved. Thus, both traders, consumers, or anyone else need to be given knowledge of efficient communication methods. In this case, the lecturer provides communication and marketing strategies, sales promotions, and public relations to the community around the market.
