Abstract

Existential female characters are the existence of female characters in literary texts. The existence of existentialism in psychology encourages human self-awareness of their existence. In researching the novel The Girl Who Writes Letters Every Night, the aim is to describe the structure of the characters' experiences. The theory used is Rollo May's existentialist psychological theory. Existential psychology is an attempt to understand humans who experience and who are the targets of experience. Descriptive qualitative methods were used in this research with data analysis techniques in the form of listening, reading, taking notes. Then, content analysis uses the content of the quoted text data. The findings include the structure of the characters' experiences regarding: (i) death; (ii) emptiness (loneliness and isolation); (iii) anxiety; (iv) feelings of guilt; (v) togetherness; (vi) spatiality, (vii) temporalis; and (viii) body

Abstract

This article examines the importance of pragmatic equivalence in translating humor, a crucial yet often challenging aspect due to humor’s deep reliance on cultural context, implicature, and audience interpretation. Pragmatic equivalence emphasizes the conveyance of implicit meaning through communication principles such as those proposed by Grice, where coherence takes precedence over mere lexical and grammatical cohesion. In humor translation, coherence refers to the interconnectedness of meaning based on shared context and knowledge between the author and the audience, rather than simply the structure of sentences. However, humor is inherently ambiguous and open to multiple interpretations, making its meaning not always directly transferable. A single mistranslated element can alter the entire comedic effect, as humor is often highly culture-specific. In this case, the translator’s role extends beyond language transfer to bridging the knowledge gap that the target audience might have, sometimes at the cost of the humor’s spontaneity. This challenge creates a dilemma between preserving natural comedic effect and delivering accurate meaning. As a result, humor translation often leans toward either overly literal or overly liberal approaches, each with the risk of losing essential nuance. Therefore, pragmatic equivalence involves more than just finding corresponding meanings; it also requires sensitivity to the social and cultural contexts that shape audience responses. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on the unique complexity of humor translation, making it a valuable contribution to the fields of literary studies, linguistics, and translation studies.

Pulp Fiction was directed by Quentin Tarantino in 1994. The authors of this article employ a qualitative method, which allows the reader to learn more about the object's background. The study demonstrates how these three viewpoints influence the characters' actions and the plot by looking at the psychological motivations, ethical issues and ideological factors at play in the movie. A deeper understanding of how Pulp Fiction deals with issues of identity management, ethical standards, and society's impact is made possible by the examination of these perspectives. The film offers an interesting story that challenges audiences to consider human nature and the idea of redemption in a morally unstable society. In conclusion, this movie is full of various literary devices and meanings, making it important to be underlined within psychoanalysis, morality and even ideology perspectives.

Abstract

>This study investigates the representation of childhood trauma in Paramore’s song The Only Exception by analyzing its figurative language through the lens of trauma theory. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research explores how the lyrics articulate the long-term psychological effects of witnessing parental conflict and how figurative devices, such as metaphor, personification, hyperbole, paradox, and repetition, convey the narrator’s emotional struggles. Drawing on Herman’s (1992) and Perry’s (2001) theories of trauma alongside contemporary scholarship on childhood adversity, this study demonstrates that the song reflects trauma not only as an individual experience but also as a cultural narrative. The results highlight how trauma manifests in avoidance strategies, mistrust of love, and fear of intimacy, yet also reveal the possibility of resilience and gradual healing. By positioning popular music as literature, the research underscores how songs can serve as testimonies of private pain that become accessible to a wider audience, turning trauma into a shared cultural text. In conclusion, this study contributes to the fields of literature, cultural studies, and psychology by showing how music operates as both artistic expression and psychological discourse.
