Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive literature review on the discourse surrounding local genius in artistic practices within the context of Indonesia. The presence of highly diverse local geniuses, owned by various tribes across the archipelago, is a significant indicator of civilization in Indonesia, particularly in the region of West Sumatra. The significance of local genius is contingent upon its comprehension and admiration by individuals involved in its development, thereby transforming it into a source of community pride and fostering its conservation. If the local intellectual community is robust, there is no cause for concern regarding introducing external cultural elements that do not align with the Indonesian national identity. Indeed, individuals with exceptional intellectual abilities from foreign cultures can serve as catalysts or facilitators for nurturing indigenous genius in Indonesia.

Abstract

Traditional arts education, such as Karawitan, plays an important role in building cultural identity and social skills among students amidst the forces of globalization. Karawitan, as traditional Indonesian music, teaches moral values such as togetherness, mutual cooperation, and collaboration, which support the formation of the younger generation's character. However, the integration of Karawitan into the education curriculum faces several challenges, including limited facilities, insufficient teacher competence, and the perception that traditional arts are less relevant to modern education. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature review method, examining 50 relevant sources, consisting of 30 journal articles, 10 books, and 10 research reports related to arts education and Karawitan. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques to identify the benefits, challenges, and strategies for implementing Karawitan in education. The results indicate that Karawitan education can increase students' appreciation of local culture and provide an authentic learning experience. For Karawitan to be taught optimally, support from the government and related institutions is necessary, including the provision of resources, teacher training, and relevant teaching materials. The novelty of this study lies in its more comprehensive understanding of practical ways to integrate Karawitan into the education curriculum and highlights the educational values inherent in traditional arts. With proper integration, Karawitan can become an integral part of education, strengthening students' cultural identity and preparing them to face challenges in the globalized world. Keywords: arts education, karawitan, cultural identity, social skills, curriculum integration

Abstract

Abstract

This research investigates Turuk Lagai, a central ritual of the Mentawai people in West Sumatra, Indonesia, as a performative act that enacts and sustains their cosmological worldview. The study's objective is to understand how this ritual reflects belief and constitutes reality through embodied and relational practices. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study draws on long-term fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and thematic analysis assisted by QualCoder. Data were coded and interpreted through a theoretical framework combining Victor Turner's ritual process, Catherine Bell's ritualization theory, and Tim Ingold's concept of relational ontology. The analysis identified three overarching themes—Embodiment, Spiritual Correspondence, and Relational Ontology—that demonstrate how bodily movement, chants, offerings, and environmental elements co-produce a cosmological order. Rather than symbolizing cosmology, Turuk Lagai brings it into being, renewing social and spiritual relationships between humans, nature, and ancestral forces. The study concludes that Turuk Lagai is a dynamic system of knowledge production and cosmological maintenance. It recommends greater recognition of indigenous ritual not as static tradition but as an active and vital mode of world-making with implications for cultural preservation and ecological ethics.
