Abstract

The dance work Berpijak Diatas Puing (Standing Amid the Ruins) is inspired by Tari Sikambang, a traditional Minangkabau dance originating from Nagari Kambang Utara. It tells the story of a Datuak (a traditional leader) who is devastated by the loss of his only child. This piece portrays inner conflict and emotional resilience in the face of tragedy, carrying the message that one must continue moving forward even in the midst of destruction. Developed with a dramatic approach and a social theme, the choreography incorporates traditional Sikambang movements such as Sipotong Geleang, Baraba Mandi, and Ratok, blended with contemporary techniques learned during the choreographer’s studies at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Padangpanjang, including jumps, leaps, rolls, and more. Performed by nine dancers and one monologue character, the piece features live music and symbolic props, including black and white cloths representing grief and acceptance. This work serves as both an effort to preserve cultural heritage and a reflection on themes of loss, acceptance, and inner strength.

Abstract

Karya tari “Identitas Yang Terkikis” terinspirasi dari fenomena sosial budaya yang ada di Dusun Ps. Hilalang, Desa Taluk, Kecamatan Pariaman Selatan, Kota Pariaman yaitu Tradisi Maantaan Tando. Tradisi Maantaan Tando merupakan sebuah tradisi pernikahan yang merajuk pada simbol atau tanda pengikat yang diberikan dari pihak keluarga perempuan kepada keluarga laki-laki sebagai bentuk pertunangan resmi. Tradisi ini bertujuan untuk menjaga silahturahmi antara kedua belah pihak., tradisi ini juga mengandung nilai kebersamaan, kegembiraan, gotong-royong dan saling tolong-menolong. Dari fenomena tersebut, pengkarya menerjemahkannya ke dalam bentuk koreografi berkelompok yang ditampilkan di Auditorium Boestanul Arifin Adam Institut Seni Indonesia Padangpanjang. Karya yang terbagi dalam tiga bagian ini ditampilkan oleh tujuh orang penari perempuan. Rias busana yang digunakan yaitu rias cantik panggung dan busana baju kurung kreasi berwarna crem dengan bawahan kain sarung pada bagian satu, baju kurung kreasi berwarna warni dengan celana longgar berwarna putih pada bagian dua. Metode yang digunakan dalam penggarapan karya ini adalah riset, rancangan konsep, alat perwujudan karya, kerja studio, dan konsep pertunjukan.

Abstract

The dance piece entitled Langkah Tanpa Suara is inspired by the lived experience of a deaf individual confronting limitations in verbal communication. This work serves as an artistic expression of the resilience and determination exhibited by this person in navigating life, despite often being underestimated by society. The creative process employed data collection and field observation to gain insight into the lives of the deaf community, followed by movement exploration and improvisation as foundational steps; the development of choreographic structure; and periodic evaluation. Technically, the work is performed by seven dancers and features a socially driven, dramatic theme. The narrative is enhanced through the incorporation of sequenced music that aligns with the movement progression, thereby enriching the emotional and dramatic expressiveness of the performance.

Abstract

Karya tari yang diberi judul Umbua-Umbua ini terinspirasi dari kegiatan mengusir burung yang menitikberatkan pada fungsi wayang masyarakat padi dalam membantu melindungi padi dari serangan hama. Untuk menggarap konsep yang lahir dalam sebuah karya tari, seniman memaknai fungsi wayang masyarakat sawah. Kemudian para perajin memanfaatkan sifat-sifat topi, pagar jerami dan tali sobek. Eksplorasi gerak berkaitan dengan perkembangan gerak yang dihasilkan oleh efek gerak wayang dari ladang yang ditarik dengan tali kemudian dikembangkan sesuai kebutuhan lahan pertanian. Metode yang digunakan dalam lahirnya karya ini meliputi observasi, pengolahan data, eksplorasi, improvisasi, pembentukan dan evaluasi. Karya tari ini terdiri dari tiga bagian, bagian pertama menggambarkan suasana sebelum melaksanakan kegiatan manggaro, bagian kedua menafsirkan respon hama terhadap gerak wayang orang di sawah, dan bagian ketiga mengolah suara-suara yang dihasilkan. oleh properti untuk menakut-nakuti hama. Abstract

This research investigates Turuk Lagai, a central ritual of the Mentawai people in West Sumatra, Indonesia, as a performative act that enacts and sustains their cosmological worldview. The study's objective is to understand how this ritual reflects belief and constitutes reality through embodied and relational practices. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study draws on long-term fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and thematic analysis assisted by QualCoder. Data were coded and interpreted through a theoretical framework combining Victor Turner's ritual process, Catherine Bell's ritualization theory, and Tim Ingold's concept of relational ontology. The analysis identified three overarching themes—Embodiment, Spiritual Correspondence, and Relational Ontology—that demonstrate how bodily movement, chants, offerings, and environmental elements co-produce a cosmological order. Rather than symbolizing cosmology, Turuk Lagai brings it into being, renewing social and spiritual relationships between humans, nature, and ancestral forces. The study concludes that Turuk Lagai is a dynamic system of knowledge production and cosmological maintenance. It recommends greater recognition of indigenous ritual not as static tradition but as an active and vital mode of world-making with implications for cultural preservation and ecological ethics.
