Abstract

Abstract

The focus of this study is related to the translation techniques of Covid-19 terms from Arabic language into Indonesian language and one of its regional languages, Sundanese. The translation materials are the learning material texts submitted by students on WhatsApp. This study uses a comparative descriptive method to analyze the transformation of vocabularies or terms in Arabic into Indonesian and one its regional language, Sundanese. Regarding the texts, no different from any translation of other texts, the techniques used that can be observed here are pure borrowing or literal translation, naturalized borrowing, and established equivalent. The technique of pure borrowing seems to be done as the last resort; words, such as virus, corona, internet, soap and bacteria, are not terms familiar for everyday conversation in these languages. Even more, other words, such as frustrasi, depresi, ahli jiwa ‘frustration, depression, psychiatrist’, have no equivalents in Sundanese. Consequently, these words are not translated in Sundanese text, but taken as they are. Comparing the translation results from Arabic into Indonesian and Sundanese gives us information that very often to use the terms as used in the Indonesian language is the only option the Sundanese students might have.

Abstract

Patriarchy refers to the domination of men over women in all kinds of field. Women have no rights to do what men can do. There are a lot of studies about patriarchy, most of which are about man’s power towards woman with the result of woman’s struggle to get equality with the man that is called feminism. This study challenges the previous studies above that study on patriarchy does not always get the responses of feminism. In Oscar Wilde’s the Picture of Dorian Gray, the researcher studies about patriarchal picture. How the characters Lord Henry Wotton and Dorian Gray reveal their patriarchal words towards women is discussed in this study. Using close reading as a method, this study shows the result that the two men, Lord Henry Wotton and Dorian Gray reveal words about women that are patriarchal: symbolizing women, oppressing women’s voices, and manipulating as well as abusing women’s emotion that the researcher suggests their words can put women in degradation as well as humiliation that feminist should fight for. Besides, the impacts on women, that is the loss of women’s dignity, are also the finding of the study.

Abstract

The novel Al-Lissu wa Al-Kilaab is one of the novels by Naguib Mahfouz containing the story of a prisoner who wants to take revenge on his best friend. The main character in this novel is Said Mahran who works as a thief with his wife and best friends, Ilish and Nabawiyya. This novel tells the theft carried out by them, namely Rauf and Said. Both are teachers and students who collaborated in the theft. However, in the middle of carrying out the action, Rauf suddenly called the police and informed him of the theft committed by Said. Said was arrested and imprisoned, not to mention his wife and co-workers who wanted to help him because they had worked together to arrest him. The conflict begins when Said comes out of prison and wants to take revenge on those who have betrayed him. Because of the feeling of anger and annoyance that rages in the chest, it shows the attitude of speech actions born from a person's psychological state. In this case, speech acts born due to psychological conditions were found in pragmatic studies, namely expressive illocution speech.
