Abstract

This article presents Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas’ opinion on the scope of Islam --a discourse that has become a hot issue among Muslim scholars since fourteen centuries ago and strongly reappeared along with the presence of a work of an orientalist, H.A.R. Gibb. According to Al-Attas, semantic approach is the best way to figure out whether Islam only touches upon religious matters or also includes a notion of civilization, because it is through this approach that the connotation of Islam will become clearer. As Islam is explicitly mentioned in the Quran as din, so the best way to identify the scope of Islam is to study the word-focus of din from semantic approach. From this approach, Al-Attas concludes that Islam as din includes the connotation of civilization, as the word din is closely related to the word madinah, a word that is also closely related to the word tamaddun (civilization). In addition to presenting Al-Attas’ ideas, the writer of this article also gives a critical remark on Al-Attas’ contention that din (religion) and dayn (debt) are closely related as the two words have the same root: dana. According to the writer, this opinion is not even supported by Quranic verses, which become the basis for Al- Attas’ semantic construction. Qur’an itself speaks of the two words, din and dayn, in clearly two different connotations.

Abstract

Islam as an unperceived religion from an essentialist perpective, beause it is transhistorical. The reality shows that the expression of Islam in one particular geographical context is a result of the interplays between Islamic teachings and local culture. This is a qualitative studyon Minangkabau customs and culture, with data collected by reviewing documents, both in the form of books, and articles. In addition, interviews were conducted with a number of Minang figures, and added to the Minang residents experiences. The results showed that the Minangkabau customs and culture had acculturated with Islam since it was introduced to the Minang region around the 8th century AD. Before its introduction, there were customs and cultures based on their habits. This acculturation occurs peacefully, therefore, the decisions of the traditional leaders do not cause turmoil and resistance from adat stakeholders in the region. Acculturation of Minang customs and culture with Islam takes the form of synthetism, while adat adapts to its teachings. When Islam with Minang customs and culture blend into one, changes occur in three forms. Firstly, when the custom is not in accordance with the Islamic teachings, it is adjusted, as illustrated in the Minang customary philosophy which reads, “Adat basandi alua jo patuik, alua jo patuik basandi bana, bana badiri sandirinyo” changed into “Adat basandi Syara’, Syara’ basandi Kitabullah”. Secondly, both customs and culture, which are in line with Islam remain preserved, such as the principle of deliberation (musyawarah) and consensus (mufakat). Thirdly, it led to the promulgation of Islam in a new culture that has not existed before, such as the Khatam Al-Qur’an ceremony for children.

Abstract

One of the striking issues that beset human beings is how to have the encounter with God, to whom they worship. Therefore, some of them design a roadmap of spiritual journey to have the encounter. An Islamic Sufi order, Ṭarīqah Qādiriyyah wa Naqshabandiyyah (TQN) have done so. This article tries to deal with the three ways of spiritual journey that will enhance human beings to arrive (wuṣūl) at God as explained in six books of the TQN. Besides, using semantic approach, this study also endeavors to unearth the concept of wuṣūl encapsulated in the three ways of the spiritual journey. Apart from that, this article takes into account as well whether the concept of wuṣūl in the TQN as a unitive experience refers to waḥdah al-wujūd or wahdah al-shuhūd. By comparing the indicators, this article comes to the conclusion that the concept of wuṣūl in the TQN refers to the waḥdah al-shuhūd. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20414/ujis.v20i2.811

Abstract

This paper tries to search the exegesis style of Muhammad Hussein Thabathaba’i, an Iranian contemporary exegete, in his magnum opus al-Mizan fi Tafsir al-Qur’an about the symbols of God’s words manifested in muqatta’ah characters in the Quran. It is found that even though Thabathaba’i interprets the Quran using multi-dimension, he, in fact, does not always use all approaches mentioned in subtitle of his book. In the case of muqatta’ah characters in the Quran, his interpretation focuses more on rawa’i, and ilmi-fanni approach, and does not use falsafi, adabi, tarikhi, ijtima’i, and hadith yufassiru al-Qur’an bi al-Qur’an. Besides, this paper also analyses his unclear opinion that the muqatta’ah characters are included muhkamat verses or not.

Abstract

Prayer as one of the essentials of human beings as "homo Deus", has become the object of studies from diverse perspectives: theosophical, sociological, psychological, phenomenological, and even political. This study will, however, shed light on this issue from another angle, namely a bio-spiritual standpoint, since the human being is made up of psycho-somatic features, or body, mind, and soul, with particular reference precisely to the human metabolism: endocrine system. This article will argue that human hormones, which have a pivotal role in human metabolism, are related to seven glands. These glands are actively managed to be stipulated by the activation of seven subtle energy centers, chakras, which can be done, among other things, by prayer (ṣalāh). To say the other way round, prayer (ṣalāh) will activate the seven chakras that will, in turn, stimulate the seven glands of the human endocrine system and will eventually boost the hormones that are significant for human life. In this way, this study will provide more illustration where "Scientia Sacra" (sacred science), concerning prayer (ṣalāh), meets "profane" science in a sort of "spiritual biology."
