Abstract

When false claims spread faster than the corrections meant to counter them, societies face a genuine crisis of credibility. This study responds to the proliferation of hoax content across Indonesia's three dominant platforms TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter/X and its concrete effects on public confidence in key institutions. Employing descriptive qualitative methods and content analysis on 20 verified hoax posts from January 2025 to March 2026, the research identifies three distinct diffusion patterns: staged-exponential spread, cross-platform replication, and the recontextualization of authentic content. Health-themed hoaxes prove most prevalent (35%), followed by politically framed content (25%). The consequences reach beyond mere misinformation: measurable declines in public trust toward government bodies, medical professionals, and legacy media are documented. Viewed through the lens of Islamic Communication Studies, the tabayyun principle is reframed not simply as an ethical recommendation but as a contextually relevant cognitive protection mechanism for Indonesia's Muslim majority. The study's novelty lies in synthesizing technical-digital, social-institutional, and Islamic-ethical dimensions within a single analytical framework.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the TikTok algorithm in shaping Generation Z’s da’wah preferences through content analysis of the @kadamsidik00 account. The development of algorithm-based social media has transformed information distribution, including Islamic preaching practices in digital spaces. This research employs a qualitative approach using content analysis of 20 selected videos based on the highest engagement levels during January–March 2025. The findings indicate that the TikTok algorithm prioritizes the distribution of content characterized by brevity, visual appeal, and communicative delivery, which aligns with Generation Z’s preferences. Content presented in a casual and relatable manner tends to generate higher engagement, increasing its likelihood of being recommended by the algorithm. These results suggest that the algorithm functions not only as a distribution mechanism but also as a factor shaping audience consumption patterns and da’wah preferences. This study contributes to the development of digital Islamic communication studies by positioning algorithms as key actors in shaping da’wah preferences and providing insights into the implications of social media use in contemporary Islamic preaching.

Abstract

Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) has emerged as an increasingly concerning psychological phenomenon among university students as the most active social media users. While the negative relationship between FoMO and psychological well-being has been extensively studied, the role of self-control as a moderator particularly within Ryff's eudaimonic psychological well-being framework in the Indonesian context has not been systematically reviewed. This study aims to conceptually and theoretically examine the role of self-control as a moderator in the relationship between FoMO and psychological well-being among university students, while identifying the novelty and research gaps justifying this study. This study employs a systematic literature review method, identifying, selecting, and synthesizing articles from Google Scholar, PubMed, and PsycINFO published between 2013 and 2024 using keywords FoMO, self-control, psychological well-being, and university students. Review of 28 eligible articles demonstrated: (1) FoMO consistently correlates negatively with student psychological well-being; (2) self-control serves as a protective factor through strengthening self-regulation and preventing compulsive digital behavior; (3) no study has explicitly tested the moderating effect of self-control on the FoMO eudaimonic psychological well-being relationship in Indonesia. There is strong theoretical and empirical justification that self-control can moderate the negative impact of FoMO on student psychological well-being. The novelty of this study lies in integrating three constructs (FoMO, self-control, and Ryff's psychological well-being) into a moderation model not previously tested in the Indonesian cultural context.

Abstract

This study examines how TikTok’s recommendation algorithm contributes to the formation of religious polarization among Indonesian Muslim users. Using a netnographic approach, the research conducts an in-depth observation of the distribution patterns of da’wah content, user interactions, and the dynamics of echo chambers formed through TikTok’s For You Page (FYP) mechanism. Data were collected through digital observation of 50 active da’wah accounts and analysis of more than 200 TikTok contents over the period of January–March 2026. The results indicate that TikTok’s algorithm tends to reinforce the homogeneity of religious content consumed by users, thereby creating echo chambers that have the potential to intensify religious exclusivism. These findings are analyzed through the framework of Mediatization theory and the principles of Islamic communication, which emphasize the values of tawassuth (moderation) and tasamuh (tolerance). This study provides important implications for the development of digital literacy based on Islamic values in the era of social media platforms.
