Abstract

Different students’ need in vocational high school   with senior high school direct the teachers to analyze the needs of the students in order to design an appropriate teaching-learning activity. The students’ need is emphasized to produce professional students to work in line with their particular field as the aim of vocational high school. The aim of this study was to identify some factual information about the students’ need in English learning, especially in the fourth English language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as the components of English, namely grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. The subject in this study were the tenth-grade students of hotel accommodation program in SMK N 2 Singaraja especially class XP 1 and XP 2. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data in this study. The results showed that the students’ need is to meet their own academic professions and their future needs. It was done by covering everyday language of hotel’s activity with its language structure and examples which portray real hotel’s activity in each language skill and its components.

Abstract

Speaking plays an important role in communication. This study is aimed at analysing teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking skill at SMP Negeri 2 Melaya. This study is conducted to show the types of teaching strategies in teaching speaking, the problems and solutions were faced by the teacher in learning process. This study is a qualitative study. The subject of the study is the teacher at SMP Negeri 2 Melaya. Interview was used in this study to collect the data. The technique of data analysis was interactive model analysis that is adopted from Yin, those are: compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. The result showed that question and answer strategy was the only technique used by the teacher in teaching speaking. Its became the appropriate strategy due to the number of students in the classroom and the limited time in English learning. The problem faced by teacher in teaching speaking was a huge number of students in a class made him hard to control their speaking ability. Then, as a foreign language in Indonesia English becomes hard to learn by the EFL learner due to the lack of vocabulary. The solution of the problems is giving more English practice to the English learners and create students in group discussion.

Abstract

Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mengetahui manfaat media komik untuk menulis teks narasi yang dilakukan di Universitas Triatma Mulya. Subjek penelitian merupakan mahasiswa Jurusan Teknik Informatika berjumlah 24 orang. Berdasarkan hasil observasi awal yang dilakukan, mahasiswa merasa kesulitan dalam menulis teks narasi, sehingga hasil menulis tidak sesuai dengan kriteria penilaian dosen. Oleh sebab itu,media komik digunakan untuk memberikan motivasi mahasiswa dalam menulis teks narasi dengan harapan hasil yang diperoleh lebih baik dari sebelumnya. Peneliti adalah sebagai instrumen kunci, dengan menggunakan Teknik deskriptif kualitatif karena data yang diperoleh berupa naskah/teks yang dikumpulkan oleh mahasiswa. Teknik pengumpulan data penelitian berupa lembar tugas menulis teks narasi dan lembar menulis. Analisis data dilakukan dengan memilih data yang digunakan kemudian dideskripsikan menjadi kalimat. Intrumen penelitian berupa lembar penugasan dan rubrik penilaian dosen.

Abstract

As a productive skill, speaking plays an important role as a means of effective communication. In English learning process, speaking is considered of the most difficult aspects due to many students are hard to express themselves in English. The population in this study is all of the students in the English Language Education at Triatma Mulya University. This study aims at knowing the factors affecting students’ English speaking skill. This review paper focusses on the research in term of speaking, especially some factors affecting students’ speaking skill. Based on the review of literature and the result of interview showed that the students’ psychological and students’ linguistic problems become the factors affecting students’ English speaking skill. The students’ psychological problem includes lack of confidence (posture, gesture, and eye contact) and fear/anxiey. However, the students’ linguistics problem includes vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. This study can be used by the teachers and future researchers who focused on factors affecting students’ English speaking skill.

Abstract

This study investigates effective reading strategies in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms by bridging theoretical frameworks with practical instructional approaches. Drawing on a qualitative content analysis of seven peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2009 and 2025, the study identifies key strategies aligned with schema theory, metacognitive strategy instruction, and the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach. These strategies are categorized into three stages of reading instruction: pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading. The findings highlight the importance of activating background knowledge, combining intensive and extensive reading practices, promoting reading strategy awareness, and integrating reading and writing in subject-based instruction. The study also addresses the instructional adaptations required in low-resource settings, emphasizing the need for teacher training and contextualized support. By connecting theoretical insights with real classroom practices, the research offers a comprehensive model for enhancing reading comprehension and fostering learner autonomy in EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of Top Down and Bottom Up strategies on improving listening skills at tenth grade students of SMA Dwijendra Bualu High. The sample in this study consisted of 26 tenth grade students selected through purposive sampling and this study employed a pre-experimental design with a single-group pre-test and post-test method to collect data, using a quantitative approach. The measurement tools used were a listening comprehension test in the form of fill-in-the-blank questions and a questionnaire as supporting data to determine students perceptions. The data collected were examined using descriptive and inferential statistical analyses using SPSS version 25. The results of the study showed a significant improvement in students listening skills after the implementation of the Top Down and Bottom Up strategies. The students total scores increased from 1546 (pre-test) to 2071 (post-test). The difference in average scores was -20.192, with a Sig. value of 0.000, indicating that the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Additionally, the questionnaire results showed that students had a positive perception of the use of both strategies. The average perception scores ranged from 4.00 to 4.35, falling into the ‘Agree’ to ‘Strongly Agree’ category on the 1-5 Likert scale. This indicates that the Top-Down and Bottom-Up strategies were well-received by students and considered effective to highly effective. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Top Down and Bottom Up strategies are effective in improving listening skills.

Abstract

This study aims to develop interactive learning media in the form of animated videos of Indonesian folktales as a learning tool for elementary school students. The research used a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE model, including analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The analysis was conducted through observations and interviews to identify students’ difficulties in understanding folktale materials. The animated videos were developed using the Canva application, incorporating visuals, narration, music, and animation tailored to the characteristics of sixth-grade students at Nusa Dua Elementary School, Bali. The media was tested with students and teachers to gather feedback and assess its effectiveness. Results showed that the use of animated videos increased students’ interest in learning and improved their ability to comprehend and retell folktales. The media proved to be an effective interactive learning tool that motivates students and facilitates the teaching-learning process. This study contributes to the development of creative and innovative educational media, particularly in language and cultural learning at the elementary level.

Abstract

Learning motivation is one of the crucial factors in achieving success in the learning process. This research aims to examine the effectiveness of video-based learning media in improving the learning motivation of elementary school students. A comparative method with the aim of comparing the existence of one variable in two sample groups was used in this study. The research sample consisted of 30 elementary school students in Jembrana Regency, Bali. The experimental group received learning using video-based learning media, while the control group received conventional learning without video media. The analysis results showed a significant difference in the level of learning motivation between the two groups. This finding indicates that the use of video-based learning media can be an effective alternative in improving the learning motivation of elementary school students. The implications of this research highlight the importance of integrating technology in elementary education to create a more engaging and effective learning environment.
