Abstract

This study is aimed at elaborating the non-equivalences in the word level, above level, grammatical level, textual level, pragmatics level in translation process. This study employed the two research questions i.e. what are the types non equivalences emerge in the translation process? and what are the problems and strategy used by the translator that emerge in translation process?. Covering these questions, this study used descriptive qualitative approach by using the library research to gain some references of types of non-equivalences, problems, and strategy used in the object of the study. The result revealed various types of non-equivalences and problems emerge from the translation process and some strategies also used by the translator to cover the problematic issues on the non-equivalence in translation process.

Abstract

This study investigated the use of digital literature in teaching reading narrative text in a State High School in Ciamis. This study is aimed to finding out the teachers’ implementation of using digital literature in teaching reading narrative text and the students’ perception of using digital literature in teaching reading narrative text. Therefore, the writer took one English teacher and one class of eleventh grade students as the purposive sampling. Furthermore, the writer used case study as her research design and conducted the classroom observations to find out how the teacher implemented the digital literature in teaching reading narrative text. The questionnaire was used to figuring the students’ perception of using digital literature in teaching reading narrative text. The finding of the study showed that the teacher implemented well of the use digital literature in teaching and learning process. Besides, there were a lots of students influenced of using digital literature in teaching and learning activity. For example, students felt enjoyable and they became more active in the classroom. It can be concluded that the use of digital literature enabled students to comprehend the narrative text easier. Finally, the writer suggests that the English teacher should implement the digital literature on teaching reading of narrative text during the learning process

Abstract

The research backgrounds are conventional literary learning, less supportive learning facilities, the low students’ reading interest on the literary books, especially on the books of literary criticism, and the lack of grade writing ability of literary criticism. This research is aimed to recognize the benefits of pragmatic criticism on the novel Lingkar Tanah Lingkar Air (LTLA) written by Ahmad Tohari. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The results of this research are as follows: (1) LTLA novel tells about Amid, Kiram, Jun, Jalal, and Kang Suyud as Hezbollah forces whose basic struggle is lillahi taala (because of Allah), (2) LTLA novel is interpreted as a novel about the conflict of inner-soul in keeping their faith as moslem and their hate to Republican Army as many of them did not pray,  and (3) as an evaluation of LTLA, background of this story based on the life of Indonesian people since the days of the Darul Islam ruled by Kartosuwiryo. The conclusions of LTLA novel are educative, namely: (1) inviting to keep loyal to the Indonesian state and its people; (2) carrying out the commands of religion (Islam) properly and correctly; and (3) love each other’s soul and inner fellow people.

Abstract

This article reports on EFL learners’ perception towards their self-efficacy in public speaking course. Self-ef?cacy has been de?ned as a person’s perceptions of his or her capabilities to complete a speci?c task with the skills that s/he possesses (Bandura, 1997). Thus, It is important for students to measure their skill in order to improve achievement in public speaking course. This research employed a survey study by means of two data collection techniques; questionnaire and interview. The sample of this research was 60 third year students of English department Galuh University. The research result showed that students’ self-efficacy improved after learning public speaking course and the students felt confident using English in front of people. Furthermore, self-efficacy affected not only in public speaking course but also in the other courses. Meanwhile, the high and low self-efficacy might be affected students’ achievements, however, they have similar purpose in public speaking courses, which they want to speak formally without feeling nervous. They have various efforts and strategies to achieve success in this course. This research concludes that self-efficacy in public speaking learning process to third year students of English department Galuh University was important to improve their achievement in speaking skill and improve their confident.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the attitudes of Senior High School male and female students toward English vocabulary mastery in learning speaking. This study also investigated the factors influence students’ attitudes toward English vocabulary mastery in learning speaking. Attitude is individual’s response towards an object, inferred from individual’s belief or opinion about it. (Gardner, 1985). The writer conducted the questionnaire to measure the students’ attitudes toward English vocabulary mastery in learning speaking. The writer also interviewed a number of eleventh grade students to explore the factors that affect their attitudes toward English vocabulary mastery in learning speaking. The participants of this study consisted of 58 students of eleventh grade of one of MA Islamic Boarding School in Tasikmalaya. They were 25 male students and 33 female students. These students were purposively chosen. The results of the study showed that most of male and almost all of female students have positive attitude toward English vocabulary mastery in learning speaking. The results also indicated the factors influence their attitudes were their pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary knowledge, their habits speaking English in front of many people, their needs toward English and support from social environment. In conclusion, students’ attitudes toward English vocabulary mastery in learning speaking is important. It helps students improving their English speaking skill. In addition, this study recommends the future research on the same topic can carried out by using other design in order to enrich the development of the theory of attitude. Key words: male and female students, attitude, vocabulary mastery, speaking skill

Abstract

Teacher feedback stipulation is a necessity for students especially in the process of writing. It’s become a reflection of their teaching process. The present study, therefore, is aimed at finding out the effectiveness of indirect teacher feedback in reducing students’ grammatical errors in writing recount text, and describing lexico-grammatical aspects of students’ writing that indicate significant progress in error reduction toward indirect teacher feedback as the treatment. The present study implemented a mixed-method with the type of pre-experimental design for the quantitative design and content analysis for the qualitative design. The sample of the present study involved 17 students as the experimental group. Students’ document tests were used to obtain the data. Based on the statistical result, after indirect teacher feedback was implemented on students’ writing recount text especially personal recount text, the t-observed value was higher than t-table value; thereby, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypotheses (H1) was accepted. Thus, the use of indirect teacher feedback is effective in reducing students’ grammatical errors in writing personal recount text. In addition, from the analysis content of students’ document tests, verb tense indicated significant progress in error reduction. Based on the findings, it is recommended for English teachers to apply indirect teacher feedback to reduce students’ grammatical errors, especially in teaching writing so that the students' writing can be improved.Keywords: Indirect Teacher Feedback, Recount Text, Students’ Grammatical Errors, Writing

Abstract

This article presents a library study of an approach of teaching literature that emphasizes on improving the students’ English language proficiency through literature and a practice of the approach in the classroom by using a literary work written by Anton Chekhov entitled ‘A Marriage Proposal’. The study aims at discussing   a theory of an approach for teaching literature which attempts to improve the students’ linguistic competence through literary works. The approach is chosen in accordance to Van (2009)’s review of the approaches to literary analysis, in this case by emphasizing on the approach for improving the students’ language skill through literature which is called Language-based Approach. This study also apply Lazar’s (1993) procedures of language-based approach which cover the pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading activities.    Keywords: Language-Based technique, , literary works.

Abstract

This study presents the use of English Pronunciation application to promote students’ autonomous learning in learning pronunciation. This study is aimed to interpret students' perceptions towards the use of English Pronunciation application on their autonomous learning in learning pronunciation and to explore the use of English Pronunciation application in promoting students’ autonomous learning in learning pronunciation. A qualitative case study was applied as the research design of this study. The data were collected by using questionnaires and interviews. The participants were 30 students of the freshman of English Education Program in Galuh University. The result of this study showed that the use of English Pronunciation application in learning pronunciation is effective to promote students’ autonomous learning. Moreover, the students perceived that the use of English Pronunciation application in learning pronunciation can helps them in overcoming their problems in learning pronunciation. Besides, it makes them more motivated, feel better and confidence with their pronunciation and also can improve their pronunciation skills.Keywords: autonomous learning, English Pronunciation application, and pronunciation.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris anak dan remaja pra-sejahtera untuk mendukung kegiatan pariwisata Situ Lengkong Panjalu melalui pelatihan bahasa Inggris untuk pariwisata. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan sebanyak 6 sesi dalam waktu 3 bulan dengan metode praktik secara langsung, demonstrasi, simulasi, dan bermain peran secara berkelompok. Sebanyak 8 materi disajikan mengenai beberapa ungkapan, informasi, dan praktik komunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris yang umum dan lazim digunakan di bidang pariwisata. Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan ini berjalan dengan baik. Peserta mampu mengikuti dan menampilkan demonstrasi secara langsung terkait materi yang diberikan. Walaupun masih terjadi kesalahan dalam hal pengucapan (pronunciation) dan peserta kegiatan masih perlu dorongan untuk lebih percaya diri dalam berbahasa Inggris. Di akhir kegiatan, diharapkan para peserta mendapatkan pengalaman belajar yang dapat menjadi salah satu modal bagi mereka untuk ikut bersaing di era industri 4.0 yang secara global menuntut kecakapan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk memberdayakan ibu-ibu PKK Desa Sukaresik melalui pelatihan English for Business dan English for Tourism untuk mengembangkan pemasaran produk kerajinan sebagai salah satu cara untuk meingkatkan kesejahteraan keluarga miskin di kabupaten Ciamis. Sasaran dari pelatihan ini adalah ibu-ibu PKK Desa Sukaresik, Kecamatan Sindangaksih, Kabupaten Ciamis. Dengan harapan, mereka mempunyai kemampuan dasar berkomunikasi bahasa Inggris yang baik dan benar untuk memasarkan kerajinannya. Metode yang digunakan tim pengabdian adalah mentransfer ilmu komunikasi English for Business dan English for Tourism pada ibu-ibu PKK melalui pelatihan. Pelatihan mencakup 1) memberikan materi dasar English for Business dan English for Tourism, dan 2) Melakukan praktek komunikasi bahasa Inggris untuk bisnis
