Abstract

This paper discusses the contribution that reading a short story written by Native American author Sherman Alexie makes in the multicultural education. The story discussed is “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” which displays cultural conflicts between Native Americans and Americans within the two main characters. In the discussion, the way such cultural conflicts are presented will be highlighted in terms of representing similar situations which can be reflected by students as individuals with multicultural identities. Cultural perceptions on the story will be discussed using the concept of multiculturalism as proposed by Menand (1995) and Native American literature by Parker (2004). Students’ perceptions on multiculturalism shown in this paper are taken from the students’ papers discussing multiculturalism, which are a required final assignment for the FSIP course.  This paper will then have its proposed final conclusion that in compromising multicultural identities, a strategy of tug and let loose is needed.BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Makalah ini membahas tentang kontribusi pembacaan cerita pendek (cerpen) karya penulis pribumi Amerika, Sherman Alexie, dalam pendidikan tentang multikulturalisme bagi mahasiswa di Program Studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Padjadjaran dalam Mata Kuliah Further Studies in Prose (FSIP). Abstract

Released in May 2018, the song “Anpanman” by the world’s most popular K-Pop boy group to date, BTS, shares the idea of being a hero by setting an example from the Japanese superhero Anpanman. Anpanman, whose head is made of red bean paste-filled pastry, is well-known for his superpower ability to share parts of his head to those in need. This humble and self-sacrifice mode of helping others seems to be the basic idea of the song, to represent what BTS is about. This essay aims to further dissect the song lyrics of “Anpanman” to show the ambivalence presented between the concept of hero and superhero (termed here as (super)hero). The discussion goes further to juxtaposing the concept of hero/superhero with idol, a term used as another one of BTS’s songs “Idol”. Considering that in K-Pop, being an idol is practically a dream job, it is therefore paramount that in discussing the songs, this essay highlights the paradox of what it means to be a hero/superhero with an idol. Within the frame of network analysis, the discussion is conducted specifically along the line of the effects that digital culture has, which helps the spreading of BTS’s popularity and persona globally. In this light, this essay argues that beyond the songs, a problematic view on what it means to be a hero and an idol is projected. Ultimately, the discussion concludes that such an ambivalent view potentially leads to a reconceptualization of a superhero figure.Released in May 2018, the song “Anpanman” by the world’s most popular K-Pop boy group to date, BTS, shares the idea of being a hero by setting an example from the Japanese superhero Anpanman. Abstract

Marilyn Chin’s one and only novel, Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen (2009), presents highly fragmented narratives that revolve around the lives of three female Chinese Americans of two different generations in the process of reaching their immigrant American dreams. Such narrative characteristics prompt an analysis conducted in this article which parallels the series of maneuvers of the trio with Deleuze & Guattari’s systemic procedure of coup et flux (cut and flow). The aim is to show that the idea of assimilating American dream with the immigrant’s is a complex matter as it involves series of actions that compromise the two. The trio’s mode of action, the presence of textual divine intervention in the narrative fragments, and epigraphs from classical to popular texts encourage an analysis using narrative studies, focusing mainly on plot structure. In the context of negotiating Chinese American culture, this article argues that within the frame of tale of revenge, the process of reaching the immigrant American dream undergoes a series of endless systemic procedure of coup et flux. The negotiation process presented via uncertainty and series of transits in the novel thus causes endlessness that leads to an idea that the dream, the happiness, would never actually reach its definite ending point; it is merely a series of transits.

Abstract

Normal People (2018), a novel by Sally Rooney, presents issues of gender and class through its description of two different perspectives of the main characters, Connell and Marianne. This article examines how this novel depicts issues of gender and class which are portrayed through Connell and Marianne’s relationship as a couple. Using narrative theories by Bal and Genette, as well as Haslanger’s and Raewyn Connell’s theory on gender and Bourdieu’s theory on social class, this article focuses on how the discrimination of gender and class affects Connell’s and Marianne’s relationship. The findings and discussion show the oppression that Marianne experiences is associated with the internalization of oppression, sexism, and misogyny. The discussion also shows that hegemonic masculinity has a role in the matter of how the difference of Connell’s and Marianne’s gender and class is presented. Despite being superior in term of class, Marianne is inferior in term of gender than Connell who comes from a working class society. However, the novel presents how the main characters’ perception changes as in the end they no longer problematize their gender and class. We argue that the novel disagrees with the inferior feeling caused by different gender and class.

Abstract

The Accused (1988), a movie adaptation of a real-life event about a gang-raped victim who seeks justice, depicts sexist behavior towards the survivor during the trial. With the main premise of seeking justice for a rape survivor, this movie highlights Sarah’s experience to gain justice through a sexist masculine institution. Referring to the theory of sexism by Manne, this article aims to show how this movie shows sexist behavior toward the survivor during law enforcement. Dialogues that show sexism between characters are used in the analysis of the movie's plot, then used to discuss the portrayal of sexism in The Accused from a feminist point of view. From the dialog and the portrayal of layered sexism, we find that as a movie promoting human rights, The Accused still implies that a woman who does not meet the expected gender roles is undeserving of justice. As a result, a ‘bad’ woman as a victim whose experience is reduced is seen as a norm.

Abstract

A descendant of Chinese immigrant living in San Francisco, Wittman Ah Sing—the main character in Tripmaster Monkey, the personification of a simian figure Sun Wu-k’ung from the classic  tale The Journey to the West—represents the idea of a “melting pot” gone burst. With two cultures (Chinese and American) bubbling in his veins, Wittman is chameleon-like in terms of projecting his image. Just like Sun Wu-k’ung, Wittman interposes, intervenes, and interjects a wide range of counter-discursive tactics into the dominant discourse. This essay argues that Wittman fits into the category of what postcolonial theory calls ‘interpellated subject’ (Althusser, 1970). As such, Wittman, in his reactions, interpolates (Ashcroft, 2001) or writes back the various modes of hegemonic discourse, to counter its effects by transforming them. This essay thus tackles with the problematization of Wittman’s hybridity, ranging from what this quality contributes to the narrative structure of the novel to the way it affects the complexity of how Wittman sees things. Throughout his journey in the West, Wittman only expects to see what he wants to see, the way he would like to see it. In addition, he sees things as metaphors, which is an indication of an effect of having two (or more) cultures and ideologies on each lens of his spectacles. As a result, unlike the monkey in children’s mimic game Monkey See Monkey Do, Wittman the tripmaster monkey in this instance, suffers from an inability to mimic what he sees accordingly.
