Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the idea of place in Nadeem Aslam’s The Golden Legend (2017) to frame the identity crisis befalling the Christian community in Pakistan as a mirror of the similar experiences of marginalized groups in Britain. As a British novel expected to be read by Western readers, the depiction of the marginalization happening in Pakistan is utilized to allude to the condition outside the country: a paradox. The depicted paradox also recalls the history of Islam’s development in Türkiye and Spain, represented by the Hagia Sofia and the Great Mosque. The loss of ‘home’ causes the marginalized to wander in Pakistan, and, at the same time, they try to establish their identities and be remembered by society, both in the sense ofbelonging and of inhabiting memory. It is the same with the unsettled immigrant of Muslim Pakistanis, begging for their citizenship and being acknowledged in Britain. This analysis is based on Bhabha’s notion of unhomeliness and Derrida’s host and guest concept, composing an understanding that having no exact ‘home’, the Christian community being a guest to the Muslim community whose territory is obligated to preserve, is treated inappropriately. With these findings, we argue that wandering through places in Pakistan is an action determining whether one’s self is constructed or otherwise, illustrating Muslims in Britain having the same fate by remembering the golden legend told in the novel.

Abstract

Tanah Ibu Kami (2020), a documentary film produced by The Gecko Project and Mongabay, published on YouTube, follows the travels of journalist Febriana Firdaus to four rural areas in Indonesia where she meets Sukinah from Kendeng, Central Java; Lodia Oematan and Aleta Baun from Mollo, East Nusa Tenggara; Eva Bande from Banggai, Central Sulawesi; and Farwiza from Banda Aceh, Aceh. The film portrays these women leading socio-ecological movements that fight for their rights along with their land rights, as they face the risks of violence, imprisonment, and judgment from large corporations and patriarchal customs and beliefs. Placing the documentary within the ecofeminist framework, exemplified by Warren (2000) and Shiva and Mies (2018), I would like to show how the documentary portrays the state and the cultural institutions having control over women and nature. In its narrative method, the film tends to look at the environmentalism done by women as something to be highlighted not because of its substantial aspects but more as a valorized act because of its masculine attributes. Thus, while the film glorifies women as empowered environmentalists with the ability to exert agency, the structure of and behind the film is based on patriarchal assumptions.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aims to analyze how the Dangal film displays gender transgression towards gender construction in the sport of wrestling carried out by the Phogat family. By focusing on scenes and dialogue in the Dangal film, this research is analyzed using film narratology which is elaborated on Judith Butler's ideas regarding gender performativity and Sandra Harding's ideas regarding the gender construction process. The results of this research reveal that in the Dangal film, there is gender transgression that is shown not only focused on the physical appearance dimension but also on the conceptual and symbolic dimensions of ideas. However, instead of presenting gender transgression as an act of transcending gender norms that discriminate against women, Dangal ambivalently opposes patriarchal hegemony by not embracing the femininity of the female characters, namely Geeta and Babita, which is carried out through acts of defeminization of their character development. Keywords: Gender transgression; Gender construction; Defeminization

Abstract

Elizabeth Bowen’s The Last September (1929), a novel about an Anglo-Irish gentry family in Danielstown, Cork in the middle of the war for Irish independence from England, portrays the fate of the youths of the Anglo-Irish. By referring to Warhol’s feminist narratological approach, this research aims to display the portrayal of Lois Farquar’s as a representation of a female member of the Anglo-Irish society. The Last September, as a modernist novel, portrays Lois’s gendered experience through actions, dialogue and narrations. Lois Farquar, teenage protagonist of the novel, is depicted to be grappling with her own struggle with self-realization and the expectations set by her Anglo-Irish family. Lois’s struggle with her identity is, in part, a consequence of the repression and alienation she and fellow members of the Anglo-Irish society experience, stunting the development of Lois’s identity and agency. Thus, we propose that the novel, with its modernist narrative that centers around female Anglo-Irish interiority, presents Lois, and the youths of the Anglo-Irish, as aliens frozen in time, lacking the ability to inherit their legacy or undergo transformation.
