Abstract

This paper analyzes the implementation of socio-scientific issues (SSI) as an alternative in science learning. The content analysis approach is used for mapping implementation of social-scientific problems around the world and is created using the ArcGIS 10.5 program. The findings highlight how the distribution patterns of SSI implementation are dominated by argumentation and decision making in SSI research. Teacher professional development related to SSI implementation also showed positive results for planning, developing, and solving problems related to SSI instruction. This study contributes as literature in exploring the implementation of SSI in educational contexts because its integration in science teaching materials is unfamiliar.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the decision-making style regarding the socio-scientific issue (SSI) of pre-service Biology teachers in four regions of Indonesia as a guide in designing active, varied, and creative learning involving students in each learning session. Data were collected using a questionnaire to 514 participants and analyzed descriptively-quantitatively. The results showed that each student's decision-making style is influenced by cognitive dimensions and processes during learning. Analytical decision-making styles also have a positive effect on gender, grade, region, and university.

Abstract

This article discusses the evaluation results of the separation index and fit item of creative thinking skills assessment that supports the conation aspect of prospective biology teachers in Aceh. This assessment consists of 37 items of divergent tasks, which is the application of human physiology courses that support the conation aspects. The participants were selected from the Biology Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Syiah Kuala University. The data were analyzed using the Quest software including the separation index and fit item. The results indicate that the creative thinking skills assessment instrument that supports the conation aspect of prospective biology teachers has a good separation index and all the items fit PCM-1PL.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to discover the differences in learning outcomes of fact-finding in the implementation of guided discovery and semi-guided discovery learning models on plantae material at X grade of National 1 High School of Jetis Bantul. This research was conducted on experimental group class that carried out learning with guided discovery and the control class with semi-guided discovery learning. The design of this research was the randomized pretest-posttest control group design. The quantitative data were the learning outcomes of cognitive domain which obtained from the values of pretest and posttest, that analyzed through T test at 5% significance level. Based on the test, it was obtained p=0.000 (p<0.05) so there was a significant difference between the guided discovery and semi-guided discovery learning model toward the fact-finding skill on the learning outcomes of student. The fact-finding skills of guided discovery was higher than semi-guided discovery learning with pretest average of control class students (41.53) and the experimental class (41.97), while the postest average of control class (69.75) and experimental class (80.66). The learning through the implementation of guided discovery learning model was more effective than semi-guided discovery learning model toward fact-finding skill.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a biology science learning continuum on the aspects of structure and function at the elementary school (ES) level based on the teachers’ cognitive abilities. This survey research used a reasoned multiple-choice test, having the material aspects of structure and function with the cognitive levels of C1-C2, was developed by listing the key sub-aspects, forum group discussion, item development, expert judgement, and item revision. The test was administered to 240 ES teachers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and the results were analyzed through the Quest program. The results reveal that the learning continuum is developed based on the difficulty level of the questions in which item response theory (IRT) shows the respondents’ cognitive ability, the level of cognitive processes from the lower level to the higher ones, the complexity level from the simple to the most complex in each sub-aspect of the structure and function. The sub-aspects with higher cognitive ability scores, lower difficulty index, lower level of cognitive processing, and lower complexity are recommended to at the lower grades. Sub-aspects with lower cognitive ability value, higher difficulty index, higher level of cognitive processing, and higher complexity category are recommended to the higher grades.
