Abstract

National education aims to shape people of faith and piety and noble character, not only to develop the potential of cognitive intelligence. One effort that can be done to realize these goals is to develop Islamic values of students through the integration of the Qur'an and Hadith in learning biology. Through the integration of the Qur'an and Hadith in biology learning, students can gain knowledge about the concept of biology while at the same time developing Islamic values. Integration of the Qur'an and Hadith in learning biology can be done by: 1) Recording and analyzing verses of the Qur'an and Hadith that are in accordance with the subject or biological material both implicitly or explicitly, 2) Implementing the integration of verses of the Qur'an and Hadith found in the process of learning biology by selecting certain appropriate learning models; 3) Evaluating the integration process that has been done in the biology learning process. The integration of Al-Qur'an and Hadith in learning biology needs to be done to foster Islamic values in students to achieve national education goals.

Abstract

The Gendol River, originating from the slopes of Mount Merapi, is one of the main freshwater sources in Yogyakarta and is increasingly affected by anthropogenic activities that may alter its water quality. This study aimed to assess the water quality of the Gendol River using an integrated analysis of physical, chemical, and biological parameters, with plankton and macrozoobenthos communities serving as bioindicators. Sampling was conducted at three stations representing upstream, midstream, and downstream sections using standard limnological methods. Physical and chemical parameters included temperature, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, and salinity, while biological parameters focused on the identification of plankton and macrozoobenthos. The results indicated a longitudinal decline in water quality from upstream to downstream, characterized by increasing organic load, reduced water clarity, and decreasing biological diversity. Changes in plankton composition and the dominance of tolerant macrozoobenthos taxa reflected varying levels of environmental disturbance along the river. These findings confirm that plankton and macrozoobenthos are effective bioindicators for evaluating ecological conditions in tropical freshwater systems and highlight the need for improved river management strategies, particularly in controlling anthropogenic pressures to maintain the ecological sustainability of the Gendol River.

Abstract

Indonesia’s rich plant biodiversity and cultural heritage are closely reflected in traditional life cycle ceremonies—such as birth, marriage, and death—which often involve specific plant species. Ethnobotany, the study of human-plant interactions, serves as a bridge between traditional knowledge and modern science. This descriptive qualitative study, based on a literature review, identifies various plant species used in Javanese rituals. Birth ceremonies involve 14 species, while marriage rituals utilize between 24 and 47 species, predominantly from the Zingiberaceae family. Death rituals incorporate at least 24 species, with variations across regions. These findings reveal that ethnobotanical practices are not only expressions of cultural identity but also possess educational significance. In the context of secondary biology education, this knowledge offers a valuable foundation for developing contextual and culturally relevant learning materials, particularly for teaching biodiversity, plant taxonomy, and ecology. Integrating local wisdom into science instruction can enhance student engagement, promote meaningful learning, and strengthen both plant and cultural literacy. This study underscores the potential of ethnobotany in supporting character-based and contextual learning aligned with current curriculum goals.
