Abstract

This study aims to reveal the crucial role of the Yogyakarta Branch of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) during the Second War of Independence, particularly in the 1948-1949 period when Yogyakarta became one of the centers of battle and Dutch military aggression. This research is highly relevant, considering that during this period, the Indonesian nation was at the height of its struggle to defend its independence, which had been proclaimed on August 17, 1945. Specifically, the second military aggression launched by the Dutch on December 19, 1948, caused widespread chaos in Yogyakarta, affecting both the Indonesian National Army (TNI) and civilians. Using historical research methods, which include the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this study reveals the significant contribution of PMI in its humanitarian mission during the conflict. The Yogyakarta Branch of PMI played a vital role in providing medical aid, treating wounded victims, and organizing public kitchens for fighters and civilians affected by the war. PMI not only assisted the TNI on the battlefield but also supported civilians who became victims of Dutch attacks. Through its efforts, PMI contributed to defending Indonesia’s independence by carrying out critical humanitarian activities during the war, making them an integral part of the nation's struggle.

Abstract

Indigenous and local knowledge is increasingly recognized in sustainability research, yet agricultural rituals are still often treated as symbolic survivals rather than as institutions that organize environmental observation, collective action, and intergenerational learning. This study examines Sawek Bangket, a Sasak agricultural ritual practiced in Kelayu Jorong Village, East Lombok, Indonesia, and asks how its history, ritual sequence, and social-ecological functions are understood by local knowledge holders. A qualitative historical-ethnographic design was employed between January and March 2025. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews with 12 purposively selected traditional leaders, religious figures, ritual practitioners, senior farmers, and community elders, together with participant observation and documentation. The data were interpreted through historical source criticism and thematic analysis. The findings show that community memory locates the tradition before living memory, while a major pest outbreak in the early 1980s appears to have reactivated or intensified its contemporary practice. Sawek Bangket combines field inspection, ritual preparation, Islamic prayers, symbolic materials, and post-ritual cooperation. Its principal contribution is not demonstrable biological pest control; rather, it provides a culturally legitimate framework for noticing threats, coordinating farmers, reinforcing environmental responsibility, and transmitting local knowledge. The article conceptualizes Sawek Bangket as ritual ecology and as cultural infrastructure for pest governance and social cohesion. The findings support respectful knowledge co-production in which local ritual practices complement, but do not replace, scientifically validated integrated pest management.

Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum requires changes in the planning, enactment, and assessment of history learning. This study aims to analyze its implementation at SMAN 1 Sikur by examining these three dimensions. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed. Data were collected through observation, structured interviews with the principal, a history teacher, and four students, as well as documentation of learning outcomes, learning objectives, learning objective sequences, teaching modules, and assessment instruments. Data were analyzed through reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the school prepared implementation through in-house training, workshops, and a learning community. The teacher had developed learning outcomes, objectives, objective sequences, and teaching modules, and had sought to adapt learning to students’ interests, needs, and characteristics. Differentiation was evident in learning processes and products, yet it was not consistently implemented because of student heterogeneity and classroom-management constraints. Diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments were applied, although time management remained problematic. The curriculum has therefore been implemented substantively in history learning at SMAN 1 Sikur, but further strengthening is needed in teacher competence, operational differentiation design, and effective assessment management.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the existence of Bale Beleq and efforts to maintain customs and culture in the Bale Beleq celebration in Wakan Village, Jerowaru District, East Lombok Regency. The research uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological research type. Data collection was conducted through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that Bale Beleq still exists and is visited by various groups of people who want to make pilgrimages and carry out traditional rituals. Customs continue to be carried out according to the traditions of predecessors, while community culture is maintained through values of mutual cooperation, friendship, togetherness, sharing, and shared responsibility. Efforts to maintain the existence of Bale Beleq are carried out by instilling positive values contained in the celebration, namely monotheism values, piety values, and tolerance values. These values become social adhesive that prevents differences of opinion among the community. This study recommends systematic documentation and cultural education for the younger generation to ensure the sustainability of the Bale Beleq tradition amidst modernization.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of traditional weaving preservation in shaping the identity of the Pringgasela community, East Lombok. Pringgasela weaving serves not only as a craft product but also as a symbol of local identity passed down from generation to generation. In the context of modernization and globalization, weaving preservation is crucial for maintaining the sustainability of local cultural values. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with a case study approach in East Pringgasela Village. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with weavers, traditional leaders, and the local community, as well as documentation of weaving preservation activities. The results of the study indicate that weaving preservation in Pringgasela plays a significant role in shaping and strengthening community identity. Weaving serves as a medium for cultural expression, strengthens social solidarity, and serves as an economic resource for the community. Conservation efforts include cultural education in schools, weaving training for the younger generation, the formation of the Nine Weaving Group (KNP), and the promotion of weaving as a superior regional product. Preservation is carried out through free weaving school programs, the use of natural dyes, and the revitalization of traditional motifs such as ragi sundawa, saritunggu, and pucuk rebung, which have existed since the 14th century AD. In conclusion, the preservation of traditional weaving in Pringgasela not only preserves cultural heritage but also shapes the community's collective identity amidst the changing times.

Abstract

This study examines the history and development of the Student Regiment (Menwa) in building state defense awareness among students at Hamzanwadi University from 2018 to 2023. The Student Regiment is a semi-military organization that functions as a reserve component of national defense and plays a strategic role in fostering nationalism and patriotism among university students. This research employs a qualitative approach using the historical method, encompassing four stages: heuristics (data collection), source criticism (verification), interpretation (data analysis), and historiography (writing). Data were obtained through interviews with key informants, including the founding commander, former unit commanders, and active members, as well as through document analysis of official archives. The findings reveal that the Student Regiment in East Lombok was established in 2018 through a formal decree appointing Abdul Basyir as the sub-commander. The organization has experienced significant development, marked by the establishment of three units across various universities. However, challenges in building state defense awareness are more internal, relating to students' personal motivation and ego. Despite these obstacles, the Student Regiment has made substantial contributions to the university through security services at campus events and athletic achievements, including provincial-level shooting competition victories. The research contributes to understanding how semi-military student organizations can effectively foster nationalism and state defense consciousness in higher education institutions.

Abstract

Batu Layar Tomb is a coastal sacred site in West Lombok whose historical meaning is maintained largely through oral narratives, community renovation, and recurring pilgrimage practices. This study examines the site’s local history, architectural transformation, and living traditions while critically addressing variations in community accounts concerning the person or persons commemorated there. The research employed historical methods through heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were obtained from field observation, documentation, material remains, and interviews with twelve village officials, teachers, tomb custodians, customary and religious actors, community members, and youth during fieldwork in June–July 2025. The findings show that local chronology places the emergence of the tomb around 1801, although the identification of its central figure varies among narratives referring to Sayyid Zuhri, Ali al-Haddad, Maulana Syamsuddin, and a Habib associated with a miraculous maritime departure. Rather than invalidating the site’s history, these variants reveal layered collective memory. The tomb developed from a simple earth-and-stone marker into a permanent complex through several community-led renovations. Its sacred landscape is sustained by pre-Hajj pilgrimage, nyangkar, and the ritual use of water from Lingkok Mas or Lingkok Beleq. The study concludes that Batu Layar is best understood as a living historical landscape where Islamic devotion, Sasak cultural memory, coastal identity, and community stewardship intersect.

Abstract

This study analyzes classroom management problems in history learning at SMA Negeri 1 Praya Tengah, the factors causing them, and the solutions implemented by history teachers. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed. Data were collected through observation, open interviews, and documentation; credibility was examined through triangulation, while analysis involved data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show interconnected classroom management problems involving the preparation and adjustment of lesson plans and learning devices, limited and underused learning media, diverse student characteristics and learning interest, and the learning environment. The causes consist of internal and external factors. Internal factors include human resources—particularly low learning interest among some students and the mismatch between some teachers’ academic backgrounds and history education—as well as limited facilities and infrastructure. External factors include school and home environments that do not consistently support learning. Teachers respond by reviewing instructional management, discussing problems with fellow history teachers, approaching students personally, evaluating their own teaching practices, and revising subsequent lesson plans. School leadership support includes teacher training, budget provision for learning media, teaching materials, and improved facilities. The study indicates that effective history learning requires adaptive and collaborative classroom management supported by teacher competence and adequate learning resources.
