Abstract

Renewal of Islamic Thought: A Construction of Qur'an-Hadith scholarly intellectualismThis research is a construction of Islamic thought reform in the case of the Qur’anic and Hadith studies. It aims at mapping the construction of intellectualism in the Qur’an and Hadith scholarship. Descriptive-analytic method is used in this study, tracing the renewal of Islamic thought in history. This study finds that rhetorical Islamic scholarship dominated the discourse and practice of Islamic teachings and scholarship.  In other words, with the addition of Salafi Islamic langue structure, the task of renewing Islamic thought confronts the hermeneutics of Islamic orthodoxy along with the institutions and agencies that support it. This results in the task of renewing Islamic thought not easily. Various attempts have been made and are being pursued by Islamic renewal thinkers with three variations of expressions and proposals for renewal. First, thinkers who approach the study of Islamic thought from a perspective outside of religious sources (the Qur'an and Hadith), the second group of Muslim thinkers who approach the study of Islamic thought from the perspective of internal sources of religion, and the third group of them who study it by combining various thought traditions

Abstract

This paper discusses the meaning of jihad in QS. At-Taubah: 73 according to two modern interpreters: Sayyid Qutub and Abul A'la Mawdudi. Their interpretation is very important because their thinking is an important reference in the current discourse of Jihad. With the descriptive-analytic method, the writing answers how the two Muslim thinkers interpreted the term jihad in the verse which supports the spirit of their respective da'wah movements in Egypt and Pakistan. This paper finds that the second author in interpreting the term jihad by the objective circumstances of their respective life contexts, Sayyid Qutb was influenced by the fact that some Muslims dealt with rulers who were considered dholim, and Egypt as a country is in a war conflict with Israel, as well as the resistance of some Muslim scholars including himself who are critical of the West. Meanwhile, Abul A'la Mawdudi was faced with the filling of the newly established Pakistani state, where he and his colleagues was founded political parties that were in the spirit of Islam. More than that, his romanticist attitude towards the early period of the Muslim community was used as a manhaj in understanding the messages of the Qur'an.

Abstract

The interpretation of QS. 4: 34 gains a new popularity in modern era as it has been used and abused as one of the references in discussing gender discourse in Islam. The paper discusses it in relation to woman’s leadership in modern Indonesian context. Hard-liners’ perceptions such as that of Salafi’s interpretation is excluded in this discussion. It deserves another adequate discussion.  The paper also restricts its discussion to the thoughts of Hamka, M. Quraish Shihab, Husein Muhammad, and of Ministry of Religious Affairs’ interpretation and treats them as exemplary of what is going on in the field of Qur’anic interpretation in this context. Using a descriptive-analytic method, this study deploys a library review technique in answering its question of the study, “how modern Muslim Indonesian scholars interpret the QS. 4: 34 in the context of democracy of Indonesia? The study concludes that they in deciphering the verse tend to adapt the demand of democracy but with a careful maintenance of the traditional wisdom.

Abstract

Hermeneutics opens up possibilities to understand something as comprehensive as possible, and at the same time, as various as possible. There can be as many readings as the number of readers or even more readings than the number of the readers as they can deploy different points of views, approaches and methods in one object. This article formulates the question of what implications does hermeneutical reading for the study of the Qur’an may have? While the result of hermeneutical reading can be as productive as possible accordingly, its implications are of variety. However in this article, two implications will be discussed: one implication on scientific necessity and the other is on productivity of reading. Two cases will be discussed here: the Qur’an as textus receptus and as discourse.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper is taking two cases of leadership. The first case deals with a given leadership trait of Nyai Yoyoh Johara, Cintawana Pesantren, Singaparna, Tasikmalaya district, and the other of Nyai Etti Tismayanti, al-Ikhwan Pesantren, Condong, Setia Negara, Tasikmalaya city. Applying a grounded research method and using Anthony Giddens’s perspective of social practice, the study identifies woman’s leadership in Islamic educational institutions, from the competition of social force of kodrat and of democracy and feminism.  The object of the study is the Muslim woman’s leadership at pesantren in the local context. The data used in this study is based on the fieldwork which was done April to November 2010 in both Tasikmalaya district and city. The study found that women apply some strategies and manipulate the hindrances they face dynamically to have a career in the educational realm, in the male world using the limitation imposed by the norm such as kodrat, with several strategies. Modern values as social forces do influence female leadership agency but are implemented through certain rationalization which still maintains the traditional roles of women. Abstract

This paper discusses how 'ulama perempuan' (Female Muslim woman clerics) use religious sources particularly, Qur’an, in their expression of moral movement as seen in media. It also contends that they try to make identity and sense of belonging by inviting themselves and others to participate in improving the wellbeing and cohesion of Indonesia as the nation. Using a descriptiveanalytic method, the study questions about the factors that have made it possible for some Indonesian ulama perempuan to propose a different view, and what do their movement represent in terms of nationalism? In answering them, the study relies its data on their recommendations both at KUPI (Kongres Ulama Perempuan Indonesia), April 25-27, 2017, Cirebon, West Java, and press release presented at Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta on March 1, 2018, as well as two other recommendations that follow. The study finds that 'ulama perempuan' have made an alternative voice using some of religious sources (the Qur’an) and secular ones through their moral movements in improving the status and role of women, the well beings of children, and environment sustainability. Their movement attracts other agents particularly that of media to magnify the voice and make the movement gear as strong alternative message of soft nationalism.[Artikel ini membahas tentang bagaimana ulama perempuan di Indonesia menggunakan sumber hukum, khususnya al Qur’an dalam aktifitas gerakan moral yang terlihat dalam media massa.

Abstract

This article discusses how the Qur’an and the perceptions of some Indonesian Muslim interpreters or thinkers inform and discuss the nature of women. It’s just that information and perceptions are extracted and analyzed through descriptive-analytic methods, read constructively. This study found that the concept of female nature has Qur'anic relevance, perceptual relevance and conceptual relevance. The study also found that from a constructivist perspective, women’s natural values were fluid. That is, in understanding the phenomenon of women and efforts to empower them, it is advisable to understand the perception of the nature of women who are held by the community, because what they understand and hold about the nature of women determines the spaciousness and narrowness of the region and opportunities for women’s involvement itself. In other words, failure to understand this aspect will correlate with the results of the empowerment effort.

Abstract

This paper delves chronologically the root of Indonesian Muslims’ tolerance tradition in the history of Islamic civilization starting from the period of caliphate to the modern one to cherish this tradition in the country. Here, this study uses a descriptive and analytical method to problematize how Muslims in Indonesia gratify themselves with the tradition of tolerance from the Islamic civilization history they read to resolve intolerance that has recently emerged. This study uncovers that Muslims in Indonesia have actually learned that the Islamic civilization history depicts the tolerance tradition concepts prior to this convention in the West. This paper argues that this understanding is potential to be a social capital for Muslims in Indonesia to cultivate the tolerance tradition in the country; thereby being able to perpetuate Islam as the religion of ‘blessing for all universe’ (rahmatan li-al‘alamin).
