Abstract

Many children of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) are undocumented in Malaysia, causing difficulties in various access areas, one of which is in the education sector. Non-formal education dominates PMI children, influencing children's literacy knowledge, which could be more optimal and impact their weak national character. This study includes empowerment by the Indonesian Young Spirit Foundation (SMI) in the education sector targeting PMI children, which was carried out in Sanggar Belajar (SB) Hulu Kelang and Hulu Langat, Malaysia. The platform for this empowerment is in the form of educational learning activities in the form of word reading and bingo games, which are collaborated with the use of regional songs in gymnastics activities, which are very important to be realized in the context of internalizing literacy knowledge in order to strengthen national character in fulfilling educational rights and strengthening the character of PMI children in Malaysia. It will be carried out from 14 to 21 July 2023. This empowerment uses descriptive qualitative research methods and a Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL) approach in the implementation process. PMI children will receive many benefits from the empowerment carried out by the SMI Foundation, including increased self-confidence in reading aloud, trained verbal skills, positive interactions, an atmosphere of cooperation, improved children's motor skills, and children feel the spirit of cultural values they have learned. The empowerment of this program is hoped to provide sustainable benefits for PMI children and teachers.

Abstract

Nationalism is also an awareness of the existence of a country or a spirit of unity within the nation. Also, nationalism affirms Indonesia's diverse identity in various aspects of its culture, so this nationalism is critical. However, most of the children of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in Malaysia experience an identity crisis due to the children's lack of knowledge about culture and all aspects of Indonesia. Activities are carried out to instill Pancasila values, culture, historical tourism, and Indonesian folk songs to increase nationalism and love for the Indonesian homeland. The learning method for introducing folk songs begins with bridging, giving examples, and singing together lively. After carrying out the activities, children became more aware of the values of nationalism and more appreciative of cultural, religious, and ethnic differences, and they were able to maintain harmony between citizens. This activity needs to be continued with a more innovative and creative delivery method to children to achieve the goal that PMI children in Malaysia can have a solid national identity.

Abstract

Indonesian, as the national language, plays a vital role in uniting various tribes and cultures spread throughout Indonesia. As a language used in everyday life, mastering Indonesian makes it easier for children to interact with the surrounding environment. They are facing big challenges in developing Indonesian language literacy. One of the main problems is the need for more access to books and learning materials in Indonesian. This activity aims to improve the reading and writing skills of PMI children in Malaysia so that they are more fluent in Indonesian. Through a holistic, interactive, and relevant approach to the life context of PMI children, this program proves that investment in language education can provide great benefits for the literacy development and social welfare of migrant children. Indonesian reading and writing training has a significant impact on increasing the literacy of PMI children in Malaysia. The results of this training showed a significant improvement in the reading and writing abilities of PMI children, as well as an increase in their confidence in using Indonesian in various contexts. Apart from that, this training also has a positive impact on strengthening the cultural identity of PMI children, helping them to maintain their cultural heritage in a different environment.
