The review, then, proposes some ways to improve students' genre awareness that could be applied in EFL classes. The ways are (1) students can be asked to analyze genre gradually to learn the techniques of rhetorical analysis of various genres;  (2) students are asked to criticize and practice writing flexibly various genres based on certain rhetorical patterns, context, and purpose; and (3) in exposing genres, teachers could do the steps recommended, such as finding the purpose and features, language scaffolding, modeling, joint instruction of the text, individual construction of the text, peer review and revision, free discussion and doing the assignment.

Their speed, critical and creative reading abilities reached standard scores. There is interrelation among speed, critical, and creative reading abilities. While integrating them in the reading class, students’ level of reading skills enhanced. They could employ speed-reading strategies to quickly comprehend the texts before engaging in critical and creative reading. In critical reading, students could optimize their ability in questioning, problematizing and not passively follow the information given by the authors. Yet, students can read the text by optimizing their imagination in understanding the text information.

Abstract

Islamic lectures are potent media for people to influence others, specific groups, and society. Based on this case, this research aims to identify and analyze the types of persuasive strategies used by Zakir Naik in his Islamic Lecture under the theme “Islam and the 21st Century,” which took place at the Oxford Union. This descriptive and qualitative research used the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach proposed by Teun A. Van Dijk. Furthermore, Aristotle’s Rhetorical Theory of Persuasion was employed to support the analysis of how persuasive strategies were applied in the Islamic lecture. The data of this research were the sentences of the speech text transcription, which contained persuasive strategies spoken by Zakir Naik in his “Islam and the 21st Century” Oxford Union Islamic Lecture uploaded on his YouTube Channel. The results show three categories of “socio-cognitive” CDA by Teun A. Van Dijk, namely, text, cognition, and social context, which are used to analyze the speech text and its relation to social and power. Concerning this, the persuasive strategies analysis shows that Zakir Naik uses three types of rhetorical proofs from a total of 121 data, which include ethical proof (ethos), logical proof (logos), and emotional proof (pathos). Ethos is the most common rhetorical proof in his Islamic lecture, making up 63.5% of the speech. It is followed by pathos (33.58% of the speech) and logos (27.22% of the speech).

Abstract

Modality is a salient notion in language, manifested through modal verbs. However, modal verbs are complex grammatical units since they have multiple functions and meanings. Previous studies have shown mismatches between actual language use and its presentation in textbooks, including modal verb representation in both EFL and ESL contexts. This study explored the distributional frequencies of modal verbs in Indonesian EFL textbooks compared to those in Malaysian ESL textbooks. It compiled the textbook conversation corpora from secondary education levels in Indonesia and Malaysia: two Indonesian EFL textbooks (IET) and two Malaysian ESL textbooks (MET), which are nationally endorsed. The corpora comprised 4,548 tokens collected from the conversations in the textbooks. Data collection involved corpus queries focusing on nine core/central modal verbs: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, and must. The results show that Indonesian and Malaysian textbooks shared the same most frequent modal verb distribution; however, other distributions differed. Besides, English modal verbs in Indonesian textbooks are more static with one-to-one correspondence, while Malaysian textbooks present more dynamic modal verb meanings. Notably, Indonesian EFL textbooks have complete modal meaning representation, which is absent in Malaysian textbooks. Interestingly, the modal verb distributions in both textbooks differ from those in a native corpus, representing actual English use. These results highlight the need for more careful consideration when designing and developing teaching materials, especially in ESL and EFL contexts.
