Abstract

Nike, a well-known sports brand, actively uses social media platforms to promote its brand and advocate for social movements, such as women's empowerment. The study aims to use Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to analyze Nike's Instagram captions that were posted in 2019 as a way of revealing the essential concept through language and the social practice level. This study uses qualitative research design and critical discourse analysis to analyze Nike's concept towards women in their Instagram captions. The researchers collected data using non-participative observation and purposive sampling techniques and analyzed the data using the referential identity and competence-in-dividing techniques. This study found that it had standard features like vocabulary, grammatical structure, and various textual features. Nike also used discourse practice by employing female athlete representatives to construct the concept of women empowerment in the caption. Furthermore, the language in the caption implied feminist ideology that helped instill the concept of women's empowerment by showing progressivity in the sports industry. The study analyzed Nike's Instagram captions and concluded that the company uses various textual features, including quotations from female athletes, to construct the concept of women's empowerment. Nike's use of persuasive language and representation of feminism ideology supports this concept. This research can have implications for media studies and critical discourse analysis in helping students decode semantic and syntactic choices in media texts.

Abstract

Differences between men's and women's language use are due to the structure of the language, social norms, or the people in society who use the language. Holmes also explained that standard speech forms usually refer to women and femininity. A theory mentioned a particular woman's speech pattern that suggested fragility, unsureness, and unimportance. This research aimed to investigate the features used by Dalia Mogahed in her Islamic lecture Body Image Reality and Standards to prove the theory. The research method in this study is categorized as qualitative research since the descriptive data in this study is presented in spoken or written words by people. The researcher found 6 out of 10 features used by Dalia; they are lexical hedges, tag questions, rising intonation, empty adjectives, intensifiers, and hypercorrect grammar. It can be concluded that women in majority prefer using feminine features to bargain the position in the society.

Abstract

This study examines the conversion narrative of Dr. Bilal Phillips using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. Focusing on semantic structure, social cognition, and social context, the research draws data from a YouTube interview video titled “From Ex-Communist to Islamic Scholar.” The semantic analysis reveals presupposition, detail, and nominalization, while social cognition reflects person, self, and role schemas. The analysis of social context highlights the influence of power and access in shaping discourse. This study shows how digital narratives construct ideological shift and spiritual identities, offering insight into the persuasive power of discourse in religious transformation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the interplay between Indonesian celebrity’s controversial issues and the responses of haters as seen in the on-line hate speech. To have a better understanding of the controversies, a case study was applied, in the meantime, the issue of hate speech was viewed from content analysis. The data concerning the celebrity’s life were taken from both printed and on-line media; meanwhile, the ones relating to hate speech were gathered from two mainstream social media platforms: Instagram and Twitter spanning from 2015 to 2022. The results of the study indicate that there are three controversial issues which might bring about hate speech: celebrity’s past controversial marriage life, the status as a divorcee who often changes boyfriends, and the family’s controversies. In addition, haters’ reaction toward those controversial issues were expressed through swearing, the use of euphemism and dysphemism consisting of social, personality, religious insults, satanic expression, provocations, mockery, anger expressions written with capital letters, and accusation for blowing up the reputation relating to family. The hate speech expressed by Indonesian netizens is in serious condition and can influence other aspect of life in society.

Abstract

Generation Z increasingly relies on slang as a linguistic resource to express identity, negotiate belonging, and build intimacy in digital communication, making it an important site of sociolinguistic and semantic change. However, most existing studies focus on broad usage patterns rather than examining how individual influencers strategically use slang to construct their online personas. Addressing this gap, this study analyzes Awkarin’s use of Gen Z slang on Instagram and YouTube through a qualitative sociolinguistic and semantic approach. The analysis identifies various slang forms—such as acronyms, neologisms, semantic shifts, and code-mixing—and their communicative functions in shaping influencer–audience interaction. Findings reveal that slang serves not only as informal vocabulary but as a strategic resource for identity performance, emotional expression, and audience engagement. This study contributes to sociolinguistic and semantic research by showing how influencers act as linguistic mediators who adapt and circulate Gen Z slang within Indonesian digital culture, highlighting slang as both a social practice and a site of meaning innovation.

Abstract

This research aims to examine textual features, investigate discursive practices, and analyze social practices that reveal the ideological constructions embedded in Gen Z’s slang on Instagram, utilizing Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). Data were obtained from 31 purposively selected public Instagram posts that contained frequently used slang expressions, such as "delulu," "roasting," and "rizz." The analysis was conducted through three interrelated stages: textual analysis (examining linguistic patterns, metaphors, and emojis), discursive practice analysis (exploring production, circulation, and audience interpretation), and social practice analysis (interpreting the broader ideological context). Findings reveal that Gen Z’s slang reflects ideologies of individualism, irony, authenticity, and digital resistance, functioning not only as a linguistic trend but also as a discursive tool for negotiating power and identity in online communication. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how language and ideology intersect within contemporary digital discourse, highlighting the socio-cultural significance of youth language in shaping online interactions.
