Abstract

This research investigated the application of Scientific Approach-Based English Learning Strategy (SABELS) in online learning for higher education level. Twenty items of closed-ended questionnaire were designed to indicate learners’ satisfaction and one item of open-ended questionnaire was to list some obstacles during online learning. The sample of this research was 215 learners who contracted Curriculum and Material Development (CMD) course in the fifth semester. It was found that the respondents were very satisfied towards the application of this strategy in online course. Some problems encountered by learners were unstable internet network, frequent power outage, slow response by lecturer in chatting, time consumption during online team work, and lack of motivation in self-learning. In conclusion, this new strategy has encouraged learners to do collaborative, research-based, and character building-based learning. Further study is suggested especially on investigating its effectiveness through experimental research.

Abstract

Socialization of free tutoring activities is one of the efforts to accelerate the education acceleration program so that national education goals can be achieved. The socialization of this free tutoring activity was carried out by a team of volunteers from University of HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar with students at the elementary level located at UPTD SD Negeri 122358 Pematang Siantar. The purpose of this activity is to find out problems related to learning after the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact if character-based thematic learning programs with free tutoring are implemented. From the results of this training activity it was known that the enthusiasm of the students was very pleasant because they received free tutoring that they had never enjoyed before. This activity develops student motivation at school. The biggest hope of the students and teachers and leaders at the school is that this activity program can be sustainable so that it can help students.

Abstract

The term "ESP" refers to a method of teaching English for any possible goal. It addresses with determining the curriculum for a scenario where students are grouped as homogeneous and have a common set of requirements. Thus, the goal of this study is to investigate the state of ESP teaching and learning in a third-year graduate student class at the University of Murni Teguh, Department of Economics. The researcher makes an effort to determine whether the ESP method of teaching EFL is used in this particular class. In order to do this, a representative sample of 50 students was selected at random and joined by their ESP instructor, a specialist in the same department. Two study tools have been used to gather data: a structured interview with the teacher and a questionnaire for the students. Consequently, a quantitative and qualitative analysis has been conducted. The findings showed that students are taught in general English with little consideration for their academic and professional demands (once they are employed). Instead, there is a strong emphasis on learning economic concepts and translating brief texts into Arabic, the students' native tongue. The ESP teacher also mentioned how he sensed a need for particular "teacher training." The findings may help ESP teachers understand what is actually required in this particular situation. Therefore, depending on the needs of each specific subject, ESP approaches should be used to teach English.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the Speaking Problems at Seven Grade of SMP Negeri 3 Junior High School Pematangsiantar. This study used descriptive qualitative research method. The respondents of this study were Junior High School Students at Seven Grade of SMP Negeri 3 Junior High School Pematangsiantar. The objective of this research is to find out the students' problems in speaking skill. This research instruments were interview and observation. Based on the results of the observation and interview, the students have problem in speaking. The problems were consisted of poor in grammar, lack of vocabulary and meaning, pronunciation, lack of confident, fear of making mistake, shyness and anxiety. From the problems the dominantly problems is pronunciation, vocabulary, shyness. To overcome this problem, teachers need to use several ways or to have strategies such as using talking stick, role play, choosing interesting topic, etc. This research can facilitate the teachers in knowing the problems in speaking faced by the students. Abstract

Sekolah penugasan yang menjadi sasaran Program Kampus Mengajar Angkatan 5 adalah SD N. 4 Singkam, Kecamatan Sianjurmula-mula, Kabupaten Samosir, Provinsi Sumatera Utara. Tujuan  dari  kegiatan  Pengabdian  ini  adalah  untuk  mengimplementasikan gerakan literasi dan numerasi hasil dari kegiatan  Kampus  Mengajar  angkatan  5  pada  tahun  2023  yaitu    pelatihan kegiatan  literasi  dan numerasi  kepadaguru-guruSD Negeri4  SINGKAM kabupaten   Samosir Sumatera   Utara   dalam meningkatkan  pengetahuan  seluruh siswa/I.  Dari Observasi  dilaksanakan  secara  langsungoleh  mahasiswayang melaksanakan Kampus Mengajar dibutuhkan  sekolah meningkatkan literasi dan numerasi di sekolah baik  dalam  aspek  pembelajaran,  adaptasi  teknologi,  dan  sebagainya. Sekolah  yang  menjadi  sasaran tempat  penugasan  mahasiswa  kampus  mengajar  adalah  sekolah-sekolah  yang  berada  di  daerah  3T dengan akreditas B maupun C tetapi sekolah sasaran di kampus mengajar 5 ini hanya sebatas SD dan juga  SMP.Pada  penugasan  kampusmengajar  kali  ini,  mahasiswa  berkesempatan  untuk  melakukan observasi di SDN 4 Singkam. Metode  yang  dilaksanakan  dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini terdiri dari observasi,   perencanaan,   persiapan,   tindakan,      refleksi   dan   evaluasi   terhadap      workshop  pengembangan  pembelajaran media belajar.Hasil  dari  kegiatan pengabdian  masyarakat  ini  yang  dilaksanakan  oleh  dosen-dosen  adalah  bahwa  guru-guru  mampu menguasai  teknoogi  seta  dapat  mengaplikasikannya      dalam   penyampaian   materi-materi pembelajaradikelas.  Kemudian  meningkatakan wawasantent pentingnya media   pembelajaran    yang    berbasis  sisteminformasi  dan  teknologi.  Guru-guru  mampu  mendesain  materi-materi,  tugas  peserta  didik melalui media.

Abstract

Program Kampus Mengajar ini sangat membantu dalam memajukan pendidikan di Indonesia karena dengan adanya mahasiswa dalam sekolah akan memberikan dampak dan perubahan dalam cara mengajar yang diajarkan disekolah yang lebih ke pembelajaran secara konvensional. Selain itu kampus mengajar juga dilaksanakan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi baik soft skills maupun hard skills mahasiswa agar lebih siap dan relevan dengan kebutuhan zaman sebagai pemimpin masa depan bangsa yang unggul dan berkepribadian. Salah satu Sekolah Dasar yang menjadi sasaran program kampus mengajar yaitu SD NEGERI 4 SINGKAM dan SD Negeri 1 Turpuk Limbong. Tujuan dari program Kampus Mengajar Angkatan 5 adalah untuk meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan terkhususnya dalam bidang literasi dan numerasi, adaptasi teknologi, dan proses administrasi sekolah, untuk meningkatkan kepekaan sosial terhadap permasalahan yang ada, mengasah keterampilan berpikir dan bekerjasama, mengembangkan wawasan, karakter, dan soft skill, meningkatkan peran dan kontribusi serta pengabdian mahasiswa sivitas akademisi terhadap pendidikan nasional,  menjadi wadah yang menunjang mahasiswa dalam pelaksanaan program yang terjun langsung ke dunia nyata selama 4 bulan penugasan. Program ini sama-sama memberikan manfaat positif baik untuk membantu guru-guru atau sekolah, dan bermanfaat juga bagi mahasiswa. Pelaksanaan seluruh kegiatan dapat berjalan dengan lancar dan baik berkat kerja sama dari dinas pendidikan, Dosen Pembimbing Lapangan (DPL), pihak sekolah (kepala sekolah, gurung pamong, guru-guru), mahasiswa, dan peserta didik.

Abstract

Pelatihan Penyusunan Modul bajan ajar Berbasis literasi dan numerasi dengan Kurikulum Merdeka merupakan inisiatif yang diarahkan untuk memperkuat keterampilan pedagogis para guru  SMP NEGRI 2 PANGARIBUAN TAPANULI UTARA. Kurikulum Merdeka memberikan kebebasan kepada sekolah untuk mengembangkan modul bahan ajar yang relevan dengan kebutuhan lokal dan industri. Kegiatan pengabdian dosen dan mahasiswa kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pengajaran dan pembelajaran di SMP Negeri 2 Pangaribuan TAPANULI UTARA melalui pelatihan ini. Metode pelatihan melibatkan guru-guru SMP Negri 2 Produktif dalam proses pengembangan modul ajar. Kegiatan dimulai dengan pemahaman mendalam terhadap esensi Kurikulum Merdeka dan kebutuhan spesifik siswa SMP Negri 2 Pangaribuan TAPANULI UTARA. Selanjutnya, peserta pelatihan diberikan panduan dan keterampilan dalam perancangan modul ajar yang responsif terhadap konteks lokal dan menggabungkan prinsip-prinsip kurikulum yang berlaku. Hasil pelatihan diukur melalui penilaian kualitatif dan kuantitatif terhadap modul ajar yang dihasilkan. Selain itu, dilakukan evaluasi partisipatif dengan melibatkan guru, siswa, dan pihak industri sebagai pemangku kepentingan utama.

Abstract

Writing is an essential skill in English learning, especially in writing recount texts, which require students to organize ideas chronologically and coherently. However, many students still face difficulties in generating ideas, organizing content, and maintaining motivation in writing. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the Mind Mapping Strategy on students’ writing ability in recount text of X grade at SMA Swasta Kampus Nommensen Pematangsiantar. This research employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The participants of this study were 23 students selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected through writing tests (pre-test and post-test), observations, and open-ended questionnaires. Students’ writing was assessed using an analytic scoring rubric covering content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The findings showed a significant improvement in students’ writing ability after the implementation of the Mind Mapping Strategy. The mean score increased from 69.09 in the pre-test to 87.45 in the post-test. The results indicate that mind mapping helped students generate ideas, organize their thoughts, and write more coherent recount texts. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Mind Mapping Strategy is effective in improving students’ writing skill in recount text and is recommended for use in teaching writing at the senior high school level.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of the Scrambled Text Technique on students’ ability to identify the generic structure of recount text. The research was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Siantar, with the students of Class X TJKT 3 as the research sample. This study used a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design. Although suitable for measuring changes after treatment, it is limited by internal validity threats and lacks a control group. Short instructional periods and consistent materials were applied to reduce these threats, with future research recommended to use a control group.   The instrument used in this research was a test in the form of recount text tasks that required students to identify the generic structure of the text.The data were collected through pre-test and post-test, and the results were analyzed by comparing students’ scores before and after the treatment, The findings revealed that the students’ mean score increased from 48.40 in the pre-test to 69.00 in the post-test, with a mean gain score of 21.00 after the implementation of the Scrambled Text Technique. The gain score analysis also revealed that all students experienced improvement, with no decrease in scores. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the Scrambled Text Technique has a positive effect on students’ understanding of the generic structure of recount text. These findings provide empirical support for the use of the Scrambled Text Technique as an effective instructional approach in enhancing students’ mastery of recount text generic structure in vocational high school contexts.

Abstract

Writing is one of the most challenging skills for EFL students, particularly in producing recount texts that are well organized and linguistically accurate. Many senior high school students still face difficulties in generating ideas, organizing events chronologically, and using appropriate language features in their writing. However, most previous studies have been conducted in junior high school contexts, while research examining the effectiveness of picture series in senior high school settings remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using picture series on students’ writing skill in recount text at the senior high school level. This study employed a quantitative one-group pretest–posttest design involving 23 tenth-grade students of SMA Kampus Nommensen Pematangsiantar. The data were collected through writing tests administered before and after the treatment and analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-sample t-test. The results showed that students’ mean writing score improved significantly from 55.43 in the pre-test to 73.48 in the post-test. Beyond demonstrating effectiveness, the findings suggest that picture series support key cognitive processes in writing, particularly idea generation and chronological organization. This indicates that picture series function not only as instructional media, but also as pedagogical support that helps learners transform visual input into coherent written recount texts in EFL contexts.
