Abstract

Research publications made by teachers, especially in Riau Province, are not comparable to provinces in Java Island. Therefore, this community service aimed at providing training on the basic concepts of collaborative classroom action research (CAR) and assistance in writing collaborative CAR from which the papers are expected to be published in accredited national journals. This activity was targeted to teachers at SMA Negeri 6 Tualang. The school was chosen due to its status as Sekolah Penggerak (literally translated as school mover). In addition, the teachers’ ability in carrying out collaborative CAR and writing for publication were not good. The training on basic concept of CAR included problem identification, problem formulation, choosing the right strategy, making observation sheets, and making field notes. To achieve the goal of publication, the teachers were assisted by students who were conducting teaching practice. They were active to consult with the team of community service at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Lancang Kuning. The results obtained from this activity were an increase in the teacher's understanding of the basic concepts of CAR, how to identify problems, how to formulate problems, choose the right strategy, techniques for making observation sheets, and techniques for making field notes. Meanwhile, in the CAR activities, the teachers have accomplished the procedures well. More importantly, some of them have completed the initial section (Introduction) and are in the progress of making the other sections, namely Research Methods, Findings and Discussion, and Conclusion of their articles. Thus, it can be concluded that this CAR writing assistance activities have been carried out successfully.

Abstract

Abstract: Language is not only used for daily conversation, but also is used in education, research, and science both written and spoken. There are four basic skills in learning English should be mastered by students such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. To support all of four skills students should master speaking. One of the ways in improving speaking skill is through the Color Vowel Chart use. The aims of this study are divided into two; first, exploring information about the Color Vowel Chart, the techniques/strategies, the ways/procedures, and the assessment used in implementing the Color Vowel Chart in teaching speaking, second, investigating information in terms of students’ speaking achievement. This research is a qualitative study that uses theses, articles/journals and other literature as the main data sources where research that produces information in the form of notes and descriptive data contained in the text under study. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with descriptive method. The findings show that the students can increase their speaking skill by using the Color Vowel Chart. This happens because the success of using Color Vowel Chart in teaching speaking in is determined by some factors such as the media, the techniques/strategies, the ways/procedures, and the assessment used in implementing the Color Vowel Chart in teaching speaking. It proves by the results of the previous researchers’ studies. The previous researchers also used the Color Vowel Chart, techniques/strategies, ways/procedures, and the assessment. Fortunately, students can improve their speaking skill by the Color Vowel Chart. Key Words: Color Vowel Chart, Teaching, Speaking

Abstract

Penelitian ini didasari dengan adanya kebutuhan untuk menginvestigasi kebutuhan mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran kreatif pada mata kuliah keterampilan menulis (writing skill). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kebutuhan mahasiswa dalam hal pembelajaran kreatif pada mata kuliah keterampilan menulis. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kuantitatif dengan rancangan penelitian deskriptif. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan questionnaire (angket). Yang menjadi partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Pendidikan dan Vokasi (FADIKSI) Universitas Lancang Kuning (UNILAK) yang sedang dan akan mengambil mata kuliah keterampilan menulis. Jumlah mahasiswa tersebut adalah sebanyak 95 orang. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa respon mahasiswa bervariasi yakni “sangat setuju, setuju, ragu-ragu, dan tidak setuju” dengan didominasi oleh respon positif yakni setuju dan sangat setuju. Akhirnya, kesimpulan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya harapan mahasiswa untuk menggunakan teknologi yang tepat guna, media yang menarik, serta pemilihan materi yang mutakhir dan bersesuaian dalam proses pembelajaran kreatif untuk keterampilan menulis.

Abstract

Information Communication Technology (ICT) has been applied and integrated into education that enhances teachers to explore various teaching and learning strategies, materials, and media. This study aims to discover the experiences of English teachers in the use of Canva, an ICT application, to create an attractive presentation of teaching English. The researchers employed Generic Qualitative Research to investigate the challenges and strategies in using the application. The researchers interviewed two English teachers responsible for teaching English at the high school, junior high school, and elementary school levels at the SMART Indonesia Pekanbaru. The instruments used in this research were interviews and documentation. To analyze the data, the researchers transcribed the interview and employed thematic analysis by identifying patterns or finding themes in the interview data. The researchers found two challenges the teachers faced in the research findings: low internet connectivity and the limitation of templates availed in the free version Canva application. In the meantime, to cope with the challenges, the teachers used two strategies, providing learning modules and adding pictures for an attractive appearance. In advance, the researchers found that the teachers benefitted from Canva's application in English classroom teaching. In conclusion, though English teachers experience challenges with the Canva application, they can anticipate them and benefit from using the learning application for teaching English.

Abstract

Kemampuan bahasa Inggris anak-anak sekolah Dasar di RT03/RW01 kelurahan Tuahmadani kecamatan Tampan Pekanbaru rendah. Ini dapat dilihat dari proses interaksi sehari-hari antara peneliti dan mereka. Selanjutnya, ini juga dapat dilihat dari nilai quiz yang diberikan pada saat kegiatan pendahuluan, nilai mereka rata-rata 55. Rendahnya penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris mereka disebabkan oleh dua faktor. Sebagian mereka ada yang belum belajar bahasa Inggris dan separohnya tidak suka belajar bahasa Inggris. Untuk mengatasi dua faktor tersebut, peneliti memberikan pengabdian  pengajaran bahasa Inggris berbasis Natural Approach dalam beberapa pertemuan. Peneliti memilih tema ini karna ada beberapa konsep yang dapat diterapkan dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris dengan konsep Natural Approach. Pertama, Natural Approach yang telah di terapkan tidak terikat dengan ruang dan waktu. Guru dapat mengajar murid di dalam ruangan atau di luar ruangan. Kedua, guru menjadi model dalam proses pengajaran. Terakhir, pengajaran dapat dilakukan dengan learning by doing.  Sebagai hasilnya, penguasaan kota kata bahasa Inggris anak mengalami peningkatan. Kesimpulannya, anak-anak senang belajar bahasa Inggris dengan konsep Natural Approach yg didukung oleh media yang sederhana.Kata-kata Kunci: Pengajaran, bahasa Inggris, Natural Approach

Abstract

Abstract This study investigated the occupational English language needs of traffic police officers in Pekanbaru. Most police officers are graduates of the Police Academy. To study at the Police Academy, students must first complete either a high school or one of the four Police Academies. Although the intensive language training in the Police Academy is often considered adequate for most officers' needs, those officers who come from other backgrounds are often left behind. Even in the case of the Police Academy graduates, all their English language training is based on the principles of General English, and does not necessarily prepare them for the occupational-specific language needs they face on the job. This study set out to explore therefore, exactly to what extent the traffic police officers' English language knowledge is in fact adequate. Data, in this study, were collected by observing, making a conversation, recording, and taking notes. In collecting the data, the writer takes an involvement with the subject’s conversation every week whether as an active participant or only as an observer. The tool that can be used in collecting the data is a pen, a book, and a hand phone, this tools use for documenting the interaction between traffic police with foreigners. The observation can be done when the subjects making a conversation with the foreigners. As a result, most of them are reluctant to communicate with foreigners event with their partner.
