Abstract

Videoconferencing tools with their webcam features are among the platforms that support the implementation of an online learning system amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, students' attitudes toward webcam use can carry out essential meanings on the teaching-learning process in distance learning. Through an explanatory case study, the study aimed to determine students' preferences toward webcam use; and the reasons behind their behaviour. The results indicated that Indonesian EFL students at an average level agreed to keep their webcams on during virtual classrooms. To this point, there are situations where they turn their webcams on and off during courses in a week. A number of reasons such as facing anxiety issues, having an internet connection problem, concerning their privacy; become the primary reasons why they turned the camera off. Findings also highlighted that even students had some difficulties using it, they tried to keep their cameras on during several courses, even it is not mandatory, in order to show respect and closeness to their lecturers and be more attentive in joining the online classes. Thus the study offers implications for educators to encourage—not as mandatory—their students to turn their webcam on during online classes. Emphasize that even if they are in an online learning classroom keeping their webcams on will demonstrates their socio-affective skills, namely showing respect, attentiveness, and closeness to their lecturers.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) describe symbols of Sintren dance based on gender perspectives and (2) develop an early childhood sex education model by deconstructing the symbolic meanings of Sintren dance texts based on gender perspectives. This research used two research-designs i.e. semiotic analysis and design based research. Semiotics analysis used is the Derrida’s deconstruction model. The analysed data were from the text of Sintren dance performance of Paguyuban Sintren Sekar Arum Glandang Village, Bantarbolang Sub district, Pemalang Regency. The methods used for gathering the data were observation techniques, documentation studies, and in-depth interviews. The method for analysing the data referred to the Derrida’s deconstruction analysis model, including (1) the interpretation of presence-absence and its difference by unboxing the existing interpretation, (2) the interpretation of trace which refers to the sense of the origin of reality, and (3) reproduction or recreation. Meanwhile, the design-based research procedure was adapted from the Reeves’ model, covered: identifying needs and its potencies from deconstruction process, developing a prototype model, validating the model in the form of expert validation, testing the model, and reflection. The model was constructed to emphasize on the kids’ awareness of their conditions, care, and protection from any sexual harassment. The materials were validated and scored “good” to be used, predominantly it concerns about cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects.

Abstract

The rapid enhancement of technology has made it possible to integrate technology and L2 pronunciation assessment. While the investigation of L2 pronunciation was considered vital in English Language Teaching, assessing pronunciation is granted the least attention. This study attempts to discuss the roles and impacts of O’Speak version 1.0 as an automated pronunciation tool and compare it with human ratings while assessing L2 segmental pronunciation features uttered by Indonesian learners of English. This study aims to pilot an android-based pronunciation test, namely, O’Speak, which was developed using Feuerstein’s Mediated Learning Experience principles. Performed under a quasi-experimental research design, this study ran an independent two-sample t-test involving 50 participants. The study showed that there was no statistically significant difference between O’Speak and human ratings in the segmental pronunciation assessment. This indicates that a new tool functions equally with the ability that human rating has. During the study, this study identified some caveats shown by the human rating that leads to its ability to be equal to O’Speak, and these include teaching experience, hallo effect, and rating experience.

Abstract

The issue, dealing with gamification to foster learners’ motivation and vocabulary in learning English, has been investigated recently. It is perceived that gamification will directly affect the teaching-learning process and determine the learning ambiance. This study aims to shed light on the extent of the employment of Jeopardy Classroom Instruction to foster EFL learners’ motivation to learn English vocabulary. The study deployed an action research method with three phases of pre-cycle, cycle 1, and cycle 2. Pre-cycle was to document the initial classroom condition before using Jeopardy Classroom Instruction, while cycle 1 and cycle 2 were for knowing the teaching-learning process situation during the use of Jeopardy Classroom Instruction. The participants were junior high school students. The data were collected through observation, closed-ended questionnaire, and students’ score. The results suggested that Jeopardy Classroom Instruction is an adjunct to aid students’ motivation to learn vocabulary. It helped students to acquire self-belief, learning focus, the value of learning, study management, planning and monitoring and persistence. Also, it mitigated some motivation guzzlers such as learning anxiety, low control, failure avoidance and self-sabotage that might hinder them from learning vocabulary. HIGHLIGHTS: Jeopardy Classroom Instruction helped students to acquire self-belief, learning focus, the value of learning, study management, planning and monitoring and persistence. It mitigated some motivation guzzlers such as learning anxiety, low control, failure avoidance and self- sabotage that might hinder them from learning vocabulary.

Abstract

This study reports a case study research in Writing Blended Learning Environment for higher education that enriched digital environment study especially in the pandemic of Covid-19. It examines the students’ writing apprehension and their performance as perceived by a selected group of EFL students who enroll in Professional Writing class. Questionnaires were administered to three writing lecturers and fifty students of the English Department, Universitas Tidar. The obtained data were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics, while those obtained from the interview were analyzed qualitatively using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s model (2014). The findings show that there are many challenges faced by both the teachers and the students when they implemented this writing blended learning environment. Though, some challenges give not only the pitfalls but also positive contribution to the students’ learning progress in their writing. The study found that students need specific and intensive instruction, practice, and feedback for improving their writing skills. It is also found that learning writing through writing blended learning environment is somehow interesting and also challenging in some covered topics and activities, while lecturers still have their instructional and pedagogical roles in a blended learning environment.
