Abstract

Integrating game aspects into non-gaming environments, or "gamification," has become a potent technique in education that can make conventional teaching methods more engaging. Gamification has shown promise in the field of language education for improving a variety of skills, including writing. This study aimed to know whether the use of the gamification teaching method has a significant effect on the students’ writing skills and their attitudes toward the method. This study used a pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. A writing test was used to determine the students’ writing skills before and after using the gamification teaching method. Meanwhile, a questionnaire was used to determine the students’ attitudes toward the method. The result of this study shows that the mean score of the pre-test was 52.5714, and the mean score of the post-test was 70.2875. The result of the questionnaire also indicates that the use of the gamification teaching method helps students write descriptive texts and engages them in the learning process. It can be inferred that students' writing skills have improved, and they exhibit a highly positive attitude when taught using the gamification teaching method.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the characteristics of MOOC-based instructional material for the flipped English speaking class  and the model of MOOC-based instructional materials for flipped English speaking class The researchers implemented the initial phase of qualitative research to achieve their objectives. The study focused on students in the English Language Education (ELE) Department at Indonesian Higher Education, as well as the ELE program's lecturers. The findings revealed that the MOOC-based materials for the flipped-English speaking class were a need analysis to be supportive, accommodating, goal-oriented, and focused on both fluency and accuracy. These materials were diverse, up-to-date, engaging, and motivating. They included both monologues and dialogues suitable for formal and informal contexts, and also incorporated tools relevant to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as WhatsApp and Edmodo. The proposed model for MOOC-based materials in the flipped-English speaking class emphasized the integration of key elements: goals, content, activities, venue, and media. The goal was to help learners become proficient in speaking by mastering content that included various topics, language uses, and genres. The model engaged students in nine activities: guessing I, identifying, searching, finding, guessing II, clarifying, evaluating, reflecting, and projecting. The recommended learning venues were both online (using platforms like WhatsApp and Edmodo) and offline (such as classrooms, language labs, and outdoor settings). For media, the model suggested using laptops, LCD projectors, and leaflets during the learning sessions.

The Index Card Method is a cooperative learning strategy that promotes active participation and collaboration in the classroom, encourages students to engage in active learning and develop their creativity. The aims of this research was to find out whether or not Index Card Match Method of cooperative learning can significantly increase students’ English achievement to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Wonomulyo. The method used in this research is quantitative research using pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The procedure of collecting data involved administrating pre-test before treatment and post-test after treatment. The population of this research was seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Wonomulyo academic year 2023/2024. The sample was taken by using cluster sample technique, where the researcher chose one class consisted 18 students. The result of this research showed that the mean score of students’ English achievement before taught by Index Card Match method was 38.89, while after doing the treatment, the mean score was 64.00. To find out the difference between pre-test and post-test, the researcher applied t-test. The value of t-test was 14.726 greater than the value of t-table 2.110 at the level of significance 0.05 and the degree of freedom was 17. The conclusion of this research is the Index Card Match method of cooperative learning can significantly increase the students’ English achievement.

Abstract

Gamification is gaining increasing attention in English Language Teaching (ELT) as a strategy to increase learner engagement and motivation through game elements such as points, badges, leaderboards, and digital platforms such as Kahoot, Duolingo, and Quizizz. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) analyzes 30 empirical studies published between 2021 and 2025 using the PRISMA framework to investigate the effects of gamification on learner motivation and engagement. The review finds that gamification generally has a positive impact on learner participation and enjoyment, increasing intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. However, challenges remain regarding the long-term sustainability of these motivational benefits and the risks of over-reliance on extrinsic rewards. The analysis also reveals that while digital tools dominate gamification in ELT, the use of mixed or adaptive strategies is limited. Furthermore, little research addresses the long-term effects of gamification on language proficiency and skill retention. These findings highlight the need for future research to explore adaptive gamification models, the integration of non-digital elements, and their alignment with pedagogical principles. This review offers valuable insights for educators and curriculum developers who wish to implement effective and sustainable gamification strategies in ELT.
