Abstract

Bogor Botanical Garden is one of well-known tourism destination in West Java,Indonesia, visited by various users around the world. The increase in demand fornature-based tourism also becomes a trend in urban society. People needs a comfortable, healthy, and sustainable living space to refresh from fatigue and recreate new experience relating to nature. Environmental behavior is crucial aspect raised by understanding (cognitive behavior) and assessment of physical quality of environment (affective behavior). In order to avoid environmental damage, it is necessary to observe the user behavior, to analyze the change of user behavior and formulate the guidelines for formal garden design. The study was conducted in three steps: site and behavior observation, behavior analysis, and recommendation. There was diversity of user behavior in Teysmann Garden in the morning and afternoon. This was driven by various perception and preference in the garden relating to personal and physical factors. The prominent activities in formal garden consisted of sitting, taking picture, and walking, while prominent settings intensively used were pavement lane, pergola, bench, and lawn. Abnormal action was found in lawn, monument, pergola, and bench. The prominent landscape elements or settings could be improved as main character in formal garden in achieving a good interaction between people and landscape as a basis for landscape sustainability of tourism destination area.

Abstract

Islam concept is comprehensive (syumuliyyah), including planning and designing a garden. Nowdays, there are various studies regarding  Islamic garden. However, in general, the studies do not refer to the Islamic law. This study  compares the concept of Islamic garden that emerge in Islamic glory period and the basic concept of Islamic law. The data collection method is study literature from two major literatures in Islam (Quran and hadith), and other literatures (books, journals, and research reports). The result analysis shows concept of Islamic garden does not refer to the primary sources of Islamic law, and it is more restrictive. It is emphasized that basically the planning and designing concept of Islamic garden could be free. It should be suitable with the location and the needs of garden users.

Abstract

Lampungnese are divided into two indigenous groups, namely Lampung Saibatin and Lampung Pepadun. These two groups are still divided based on their inhabited territories. The objectives of this study are to identify the characteristics and elements that form the traditional settlement landscape pattern of Lampungnese Pepadun community, and to analyze their traditional settlement landscape pattern. This research was conducted in Tiyuh (Kampung) Gedung Batin, Blambangan Umpu District, Way Kanan, Lampung. Data were collected from three important main sources, which are customary texts, traditional leaders interviews, and existing settlement artefacts. The collected data was analyzed using historical approach. The results shows that the constituent elements of the traditional Lampung Pepadun settlement consist of traditional buildings (houses, communal buildings (sesat), as well as places of worship), arable land, rivers, residential roads and burial land. Tiyuh Gedung Batin is arranged in a pattern that extends along the river flow with houses facing each other.

Abstract

Vulnerability Analysis of Land Changes in Coastal Landscapes in Kuta Selatan District, Bali. Kuta Selatan District is a district located in the southern coastal part of Bali Province. Its existence in a coastal area makes this area rich in natural resources but also has a high level of vulnerability to damage, change, or disappearance of an ecosystem. This study aim to analyze the vulnerability of the landscape based on land cover changes in Kuta Selatan District and analyze the driving factors of landscape change. Land cover is classified into 4 (water bodies, vegetation areas, open areas, and built areas. Land cover change analysis used Landsat 7 ETM+ image data with test years 2000, 2010, and 2020. The spatial analysis method was used to analyze the land cover changes that occurred. The results showed that the rate of land cover change that occurs in Kuta Selatan District from 2000 to 2020 is 3-4% per year with dominated by increasing of open areas and built-up areas respectively. Meanwhile, the area of vegetation and water bodies has always experienced a decrease in area. This study also analyzes the driving factors of land cover change using the binary logistic regression analysis method. 7 variables are thought to affect changes in land cover that occur, namely distance to the main road (X1), distance to the river (X2), altitude/elevation (X3), slope (X4), population density (X5), distance from state universities (X6) and distance to tourist attractions (X7). The analysis results show that only the distance variable to the main road (X1) influences changes that occur in the 2000-2020 range. Supervision and policies that favor the sustainability of the existence of vegetation areas are the main focus of the recommendations.

Abstract

The shifting of the zoo perspective, from entertainment to being more conservation-oriented has brought positive impacts to environmental conservation. However, it also brought conflict where the need in improving animal welfare contradicted the efforts in increasing visitor satisfaction. This research aimed to evaluate the landscape element of zoo exhibits based on visitor preference as an alternative way to pursue a balance between this conflict. This research was conducted in Ragunan Zoo, Indonesia from 2019 to 2022. Two phases of the questionnaire were conducted during the research. The first questionnaire with a total of 99 respondents resulted that tiger, giraffe, and elephant became the most favorite animals. In opposite, snake, crocodile, and long-tailed macaque became the least favorite animals. In addition, the favorite landscape elements of the zoo’s exhibits were trees, water features, and woods/ log piles; while the least favorite landscape elements were stones, toys (environmental enrichment), and shrubs/climber plants. An in-depth questionnaire was conducted with a total of 37 respondents to understand the preference of landscape elements for visitor satisfaction and animal welfare through exhibit design model simulation. The study found that most respondents showed a positive value on high naturalistic exhibit design for animal welfare. However, the value of high naturalistic exhibits was lower when it comes to visitor satisfaction. It indicated that the presence of trees might reduce visitor’s visibility and overall satisfaction. The result of favorite and least favorite landscape elements slightly varies compared to the first questionnaire. Trees and water features became a consistent favorite landscape element, while toys became the least favorite one. However, the result was the opposite in the shrubs/climber plants element, as in this questionnaire, this element had a positive result in the most of evidence. In the case of stone and wood, the result might vary on animal species and the total area of the zoo’s exhibit.
