Abstract

The existence of sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) are increasingly threatened due to habitat loss and ilegal huntingt. One of  sambar deer’s stronghold population in Kalimantan  is Tanjung Puting National Park (TNTP). Population decline of sambar deer can be avoided by habitat management. This study aimed to reveal food plants that potentially eaten by the deer and productivity and carrying capacityof the deer’s habitat.  This study was focused in Teluk Pulai Resort  of  TPNP.  The study revealed that sambar deer consumed at least 53 species of plant including into  33 families. Parts of plants eaten by sambar deerconsisted leaves (31 species), leaves and stems (4 species), leaves and flowers (6 species), leaves and fruits (10 species) and fruit (2 species). The distribution patterns of sambar deer’s food plants were clumped distribution (57,38%), random (16,39%) and unknown (26,23%).  Productivity of the habitat was  1.809.879,644 kg day-1 to 2.613.587,565 kg day-1, resulting an estimate of carrying capacity of 2 individuals ha-1. Keywords: Sambar deer, food plant,  distribution pattern,  carrying capacity

Abstract

Butterfly has many ecological roles and it can be found in a wide range of habitats in urban areas. Urban forest as one of the butterfly habitat in urban areas has high conservation value, in contrast, environmental disturbances have been indicated causes various changes in urban forest environmental condition and affect communities that exist within it, including butterfly. This research aims to compare and analyze butterfly communities in various types, characteristics, and environmental disturbances of urban forest. The surveys were carried out at four types of urban forest (residential, industrial, recreational, and highway types) in East Jakarta Municipality on three different periods (dry, dry-wet transitional, and wet seasons) from October 2014 to Januari 2015 by using Pollard Transect method. Study showed that butterfly diversity was decreasing within increasing degree of environmental disturbance. Transitional period and urban forest in residential area had the highest species richness and diversity, moreover, recreational and residential types of urban forest had the highest community similarity in all seasons.  Keywords: butterfly, characteristic, environmental disturbance, types, urban forest

Abstract

This research was carried out to identification and analysis of food forage diversity, productivity and carrying capacity of Kemampo special purpose forest area in South Sumatera as sambar deer captive breeding area. Diversity food forage for sambar deer were analysis systematically by using vegetation analysis with 10 units of square plot models for each growth level of vegetation with different size. Estimation of food forage productivity  were done by using 10 units of square plot models (1x1 m2) for each harvesting periode 20 days, 30 days and 40 days. Result of reseach was showed that there are 13 species of food forage has identification as sambar deer feed and five species among them were identification as urgent feed and high palatability for sambar deer, i.e Paspalum conjugatum, Imperata cylindrica, Acacia mangium, Vitex pubescens, dan Melastoma malabathricum. The avarage of food forage productivity for each harvesting periode 20 days, 30 days and 40 days were 48,40 kg/m2/day, 57,89 kg/m2/day and 62,78 kg/m2/day, with avarage value of food forage productivity  was  56,66 kg/m2/day or  152.982 kg/ha/year, and  458.946 kg/3 ha/year. According to this value of food forage productivity, and by using the assumptiom of dayly food need of sambar deer about 23 kg/head/day, so  the carrying capacity of Kemampo forest area were estimated about 13,968 individuals of sambar deer per 3 hectares per year or  per hectare  the area could retain everyday about 13 individuals of sambar deer. Keywords: rusa samsambar deer, food forage, productivity, carrying capacity, captive breeding

Abstract

The research on herpetofauna to be used as traditional medicine are still few compared to research on medicinal plants, especially in Indonesia. This paper discusses the characteristics of traders and consumers of medicine that derived from herpetofauna and also examines the perceptions of traders and consumers on herpetofauna conservation and their use as medicine. To compare whether there are different perceptions between consumers in Jakarta and Bandung, the Chi square test was used; and to find out whether there are influence of education and age on respondents' perceptions, the Spearman test was used. The results showed that most traders were dominated by men of productive age with a relatively low level of education. The traders are mostly Moslem, and originated from Betawi and Sundanese. Most traders have been in the business for more than 20 years. The consumers are also dominated by men and fairly even between Moslems and non Moslems. Consumers are generally Chinese and most of them are aged 35-39. The level of education of consumers is higher than the traders. No significant differences were found regarding the perception of traders and consumers in the two cities. There is a significant positive correlation between education level and perceptions regarding animal use regulations and animal protection regulations.
