Abstract

Income inequality in Indonesia has been worse for the past ten years, therefore the right policy is really needed to reduce inequality. However, to know what is the right policy that can reduce income inequality, studies about the inequality itself is necessary. The purpose of this study is to give picture about in what condition high inequality happened and why inequality increased. The methods used are static decomposition and decomposition of changes inequality or dynamic decomposition. The result of this study show that highest inequality happened between population with different education level of household head. There was indication that education level of household head already increased, but it still did not contribute significantly to reduce inequality. Therefore to reduce inequality, Indonesian people should be supported to increase their education level.    Keywords: changes inequality; dynamic decomposition; inequality; static decomposition

Abstract

Information on the absence of basic immunization due to religious reasons and the general overview of immunization coverage among religious believers in Indonesia is still limited. This study aims to examine the relationship between parental religiosity and basic immunization status on children because there are still many children who are not fully immunized in Indonesia. This study used cross-sectional data of the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) 2007 and 2014 with the unit of analysis for families having children aged 1-5 years. Our estimations using ordered logistic regression confirm that there is a relationship between religiosity on the parents' decision to perform basic immunization on their children. The differences in religiosity patterns in 2007 and 2014 illustrate changes in individual religious behavior towards the basic immunization program. These changes occur through religious social support.

Abstract

The modernisation theory assumes that the larger the middle class, the more likely democracy is supported; for example, there will be more participation in elections, as shown in Western countries. However, there is no clear evidence on whether this trend also appears in developing countries. This study emphasises the association between the proportion of the middle class and the support for democracy in terms of voter turnout. Irrespective of the nature of the elections, we suppose that the modernisation level, proxied by the middle-class share, determines voter turnouts. Using data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and the General Election Commission (KPU), we differentiate the voter turnouts in Indonesia's general election in 2019 at the district or city levels by grouping them into modernised and less-modernized regions, i.e., urban versus rural, Java versus outside Java, and western versus eastern regions. This study documented a deviation from the modernisation theory, evidenced by an unclear association between the proportion of the middle class and the voter turnout in the modernised areas. Counterintuitively, there are positive associations in the less modernised areas. The findings also reveal the selective participation among voters, as they showed different participation levels in the types of elections conducted in one day. They were more active in presidential elections than in parliamentary elections. In developing countries like Indonesia, the expansion of the middle class, followed by the declining number of rural regions, may lead to a decline in voter turnouts, thus raising demand for good governance and better performance of parties and candidates.

Abstract

The developmental state concept, which entails proactive government support for economic structural transformation, remains contentious today. Some scholars vigorously argue that government intervention in the economy was indispensable to the success of East Asian countries, whereas others are critical of the practice, arguing that it tends to neglect sustainability dimensions and contending that government intervention in the market is often unwarranted. In this study, the authors analyse how Indonesia’s nickel ‘downstreaming’ strategy represents a new developmental state model that considers the aforementioned discourse on the merit of industrial policy. The new model aligns the classical developmental state concept with the need to address pressing environmental and social concerns, which are widely recognized as being of paramount importance. Through an integrative literature review and secondary data analysis, the study reveals that Indonesia’s downstreaming strategy does exemplify a new developmental state model, as the government does not aim just to stimulate economic growth but also to contribute to the energy transition with EV battery manufacturing and to invigorate social inclusion by ameliorating inequality particularly in Eastern Indonesia. Nevertheless, the application of the new developmental state model through the downstreaming strategy uncovers some areas where improvement is necessary. The policy needs to be continuously refined so that its negative environmental and social externalities can be mitigated, and it can serve as a better example of a new developmental state model.

Abstract

Indonesia has ranked third among countries with the highest number of smokers in Asia because the price of cigarettes in those countries is still affordable. The strategy to make the price of cigarettes is not affordable is increasing cigarette excise tax. This instrument is considered the most effective way to control cigarette consumption. The purpose of this study was to find out how the public perceive the increase of the cigarette excise tax to cover the National Health Insurance (NHI) deficit and to identify the factors which affect such perception. This study used mobile phone survey and the sample were 1000 respondents. The list of potential respondent’s mobile phone numbers was selected using the systematic random sampling method with an interval of 100,000 to 200,000. The result showed that 87.9% respondents agree to increase cigarette price so that the children do not start to smoke. The majority of respondents (86.2%) also agree to increase the price of cigarettes to finance the JKN deficit. Perceptions of respondents who agreed to increase the price of cigarettes to prevent smoking initiation in children also tended to accede the increase in cigarette prices for financing the JKN deficit.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relations of social capital (“gotong royong”, the existence of sporting activities, the number of activities car-ried out by the Badan Permusyawaratan Desa) on the earthquake fol-lowed by tsunami and liquefaction disaster recovery process that oc-curred in Central Sulawesi on September, 26th 2018. By using the intensi-ty of the night light (Suomi National Polar Partnership Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite – SNPP VIIRS data) in assessing the time for recovery of economic activity and PODES 2018, a survival analysis was performed. The analysis shows that villages with higher social capital need a shorter time to reach their pre-disaster recovery. The chances of a village affected by the disaster having sports activities were 13,046 times faster than that of villages without sports activities. This research also indicates the positive role of village institutions and infrastructure in accelerating the recovery process of villages affected by disasters.

Abstract

This article aimed to determine the extent to which the BPNT program affects food consumption, nutritional intake, and cigarettes in poor households in Indonesia. The problem was focused on comparing the impact of social assistance in the form of in kind, e-vouchers, and cash transfers on changes in consumption of calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates in poor households receiving assistance. Some Researches in a number of countries showed that in-kind assistance is able to have the greatest impact on increasing the beneficiary's calorie consumption compared to cash transfers. This research was analyzed quantitatively using a quasi-experimental design approach with the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) analysis method. Sources of data came from secondary data from the National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) Quarter I (March) of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) 2018, in the form of the consumption/expenditure module (KP), and the Susenas of basic information on household members (KOR). The result showed that BPNT contributes to an increase in the fat consumption of beneficiary households. The biggest increase occurred in the BPNT PKH complementary program, not only in fat consumption, but also in protein. BPNT also contributed to the increase in cigarette consumption among households in the non-PKH and PKH program group, while in the PIP program group, showed the opposite result.

Abstract

The surge in COVID-19 cases that hit Indonesia in May – July 2021 led to a decline in the capacity of the health system. It was reflected by an increase in the national Bed Occupancy Ratio (BOR) percentage of more than 60%, where DKI Jakarta had the highest percentage of BOR among all provinces, reaching 85%. The death rate also soared at 256 deaths per day. The government responded this incident by continuing to increase the bed capacity, so BOR percentage could be decreased in order to preventing a higher death rate. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze how the impact of increasing bed capacity on deaths from COVID-19. This study estimates 511 time series data using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method. As a result, the addition bed capacity had a negative association with COVID-19 deaths. The increase in overall bed capacity, ICU bed capacity, and isolation bed capacity could reduce deaths of COVID-19 by 22.5%, 17.3% and 22.7%, respectively.
