Abstract

This study aims to identify students’ mathematical critical thinking ability in solving HOTS problems based on cognitive styles and gender. It is a descriptive and qualitative study. It used the purposive sampling technique to determine 4 subjects based on the categories of impulsive and reflective cognitive styles covering both male and female students. Data were collected by interviews, documentation, the MFFT test, and the mathematical critical thinking skill test using HOTS questions. The results showed that students who have the impulsive cognitive style could meet the FRISCO indicators in solving HOTS questions. Students with a reflective cognitive style could not meet the indicator of reason as they were unable to provide supporting reasons related to the information found. Female students provided a more detailed, coherent, and clearer explanation in solving HOTS questions compared to male students.

Abstract

The implementation of research activities in this paper is intended to provide an analysis related to the ability of students to reason mathematically in terms of self-regulated learning using qualitative methods and descriptive approaches. Data collection techniques will be obtained through filling out 6 test questions, 28 questionnaire statements, and interview activities. The subjects to be observed were carried out through a technique called purposive sampling so that 6 students were obtained which were divided into two students in each category. The datta will be arranged sequentially using data analysis technique consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the data found identify that students in the high self-regulated learning category have mathematical reasoning abilities as well. Furthermore, students in the medium categori have the ability to do moderate mathematical reasoning. Finally, students who are in the low category have low mathematical reasoning abilities. So based on the data above, it can be concluded that the higher the level of self-regulated learning. The less likely it is to make mistakes in solving problem related to the ability to do mathematical reasoning. The gives an indication that the better the level of intelligence and critical thinking that a person has, the mathematical reasoning ability will follow in the same.

Abstract

Creative thinking may determine individuals' problem-solving ability, including mathematics. This study aimed to analyze and describe the creative mathematical thinking ability to solve Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) problems by considering students' cognitive styles and gender roles. This descriptive qualitative study employed a purposive sampling method to select the study sample with criteria: senior high school students, males, and females, with reflective and impulsive cognitive styles. The study participants were four students, comprising one pair of male and female students of reflective and impulsive cognitive styles. Data were obtained by conducting the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT), mathematical creative thinking abilities test to solve HOTS problems, and interviews. Data were analyzed with data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Method triangulation was then performed to test the validity of this study by comparing the datasets. Results of this study revealed that all male students with a reflective and impulsive cognitive style could demonstrate fluency indicators of mathematical creative thinking ability. While, only half of the female counterparts were able to do so. Furthermore, this study's results indicated that both male and female students could not solve HOTS problems in flexibility and novelty indicators of mathematical creative thinking ability. Keywords: cognitive styles, gender, HOTS, creative thinking.
