Abstract

Reading simply can be defined as a process to understand and get information from a text. Cohesion is the meaning relation that appears within the text in order to build connection among the different parts of the text. Understanding the cohesion can bring the students to get good comprehension in reading. Therefore, in this research, the researchers want to prove that students cohesion understanding can be correlated with students reading comprehension. The purpose of this research is to investigate and to find out the correlation between EFL Learners cohesion and their reading comprehension. The subjects of this research were the fourth semester students at English education department of State Islamic Institute of Metro in the Academic Year of 2019/2020. To investigate and calculate the correlation between those variables, the researchers applies Product-moment Pearson- correlation. The result of data analysis shows that r observed for correlation between cohesion understanding and reading comprehension is 0.728, after considering the Product Moment table by using df 30 it can be found that the critical value of r Product Moment for the 5% level is 0.361 and for the 1% level is 0.463. The data confirmed that r observed is higher than r table. Therefore, it can be inferred that there is a positive and significant correlation between the students cohesion understanding and reading comprehension among the fourth semester students at  English education department of State Islamic Institute of Metro in the Academic Year of 2019/2020.

Abstract

In 2020, novel coronavirus or Covid-19 spread rapidly via international air travel from China to many cities across the world, and it is resulting in over a million cases of infections and deaths. In Indonesia, as the virus invaded the community so did fear. This paper used a case study to investigate teachers’ experiences of the role played by digital technology. The interview and questionnaire results showed that teachers were faced with the challenge of using digital technology to provide an education that would reach beyond school walls into the homes and computers of Indonesian students. Teachers had to re-think their teaching strategies and provide their students with new and different opportunities to work through curriculum requirements. Covid-19 provided a catalyst for the intense use of ICT in ways that had not been anticipated or prepared for. The plunge into ICT was a voyage of exciting discovery for some and frustration for others. Either way, it had an impact on subsequent perceptions of the potential and shortcomings of ICT in education in Indonesia.

Abstract

The impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the education system is inevitable that higher education institutions choose to transform their instructional practices to entirely online using specific platforms. This shifting comes with challenges to students as they are demanded to be independent and autonomous. This study investigated the students’ readiness and perception towards being an autonomous learner in online language-learning. This case study investigated 25 students who joined online language learning by the WhatApps group in an English department of STAI Sufyan Tsauri Majenang. The data were gained by giving an online questionnaire, having an online interview with some students who were chosen randomly, and also assigning students self-report. The data showed that the students do not have enough autonomy in online language-learning. It means that the students are not ready to be autonomous learners in online language learning. The result of the study indicated that the students prefer having a face to face class and direct guidance from the teacher where 66.9% of the same students prefer learning in class or face to face meeting. In comparison, only 18.5 % who share no problem having an online class. 14.6% of them enjoy both options. This finding suggests that teachers need some strategies to promote and foster students’ learner autonomy to achieve learning objectives in online language learning.

Abstract

PLEASE Strategy is a mnemonic that provides learners with a road map for writing a text. It is a strategy when a teacher teaches the students an acronym to remember each step in writing. PLEASE strategy will help students to write, to start the first sentence, and to put the data information in their writing. This article refers to an experimental study on the effectiveness of PLEASE Strategy to teach writing at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak. The samples were two classes, experimental class which was taught using PLEASE Strategy and control class which was taught using Guided Writing Strategy. To gain the data, two instruments were use, writing test and linguistic intelligence test. The data were, then, analyzed by using Multifactor Analysis of Variance ANOVA 2x2 and Tukey test. Before conducting the ANOVA test, pre-requisite test namely normality and homogeneity test were conducted. The findings of this research are: (1) PLEASE strategy is more effective than Guided Writing Strategy to teach writing; (2) The students having high linguistic intelligence have better writing skill than those having low linguistic intelligence; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ linguistic intelligence in teaching writing.PLEASE Strategy is a mnemonic that provides learners with a road map for writing a text. Abstract

Listening is one of important skills the students should posses in learning English as a foreign language. Listening has a vital role in learning a foreign language especially in communication since most of the students’ activities involve listening. Unfortunately, students’ listening comprehension did not reach a good result. This study was conducted to reveal the effect of dictogloss to improve students’ listening achievement. The design of this study was a quasi-experimental study. The samples were chosen from the second grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Pandeglang by using purposive sampling. The experimental class was taught by implementing dictogloss, while the control class was taught without dictogloss. A test was administered as the primary instrument to collect the data. The final mean scores gained from both classes were analyzed by using t-test at a significance level of α = 0.05. It was found that the mean score of experimental class was 67.6, while the control class was 59.96. The statistical calculation of gained score revealed that the t-count was 2.53, and the t-table was 1.668 at a significant level of α = 0.05. This showed that the t-count was higher than t-table. It implied that there was a significance difference of two mean scores gained. Therefore, it could be concluded that dictogloss provided positive influence on students’ listening achievement, and it could be an alternative technique to be used in teaching listening in the classroom.

Abstract

ABSTRAKKemampuan berbicara di depan umum atau lebih dikenal dengan public speaking merupakan salah satu kemampuan yang membutuhkan ketrampilan yang sangat kompleks. Tujuan public speaking pada umumnya adalah untuk menyampaikan informasi, menghibur, ataupun untuk mempengaruhi para pendengarnya. Namun, hal ini bukanlah hal yang mudah mengingat kegiatan public speaking harus dilakukan secara terstruktur agar pesan yang dimaksudkan pembicara dapat tersampaikan dengan baik. Persiapan dan latihan yang rutin merupakan kunci suksesnya suatu public speaking. Kegiatan pelatihan public speaking ini bertujuan untuk dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa di depan umum terutama dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Pelatihan dilakukan secara daring dan luring dengan pemaparan beberapa materi yang nantinya dapat dipraktikkan para siswa dalam melatih public speaking mereka. Berdasarkan hasil kuesioner dan interview, ditunjukkan bahwa para siswa sangat antusias dalam mengikuti pelatihan public speaking dan mereka menyampaikan bahwa mereka lebih percaya diri dalam berbicara di depan publik setelah melakukan pelatihan. Berdasarkan evaluasi yang dilakukan, tugas-tugas public speaking para siswa juga menunjukkan hasil yang memuaskan. Dengan hasil ini, diharapkan kemampuan public speaking siswa, terutama dalam bahasa Inggris dapat semakin meningkat sehingga dapat membawa dampak yang baik bagi mereka di masa yang akan datang. Kata kunci: Public speaking, Pelatihan. ABSTRACTThe ability to speak in front of public or better known as public speaking is an ability that requires very complex skills. Generally, the purpose of public speaking is to convey information, to entertain, or to influence the audience. However, this task is not an easy thing because public speaking must be carried out in such a structured manner so that the message intended by the speaker can be conveyed properly. Preparation and regular practice are the keys to a successful public speaking. This public speaking training activity was aimed to improve students’ speaking skill especially public speaking using English. The training was carried out online and offline which were fulfilled by the explanation of several materials that can be practiced by the students in training their public speaking skill. According to the result of questionnaire and interview, it could be seen that the students were enthusiastic in joining the training and students were also more confidents in doing public speaking. Moreover, based on the evaluation, the students’ public speaking assignments also showed satisfactory results. With this result, it is expected that students’ public speaking skill, especially in English, can more improve significantly so that it can bring good impacts for the students in the future. Keywords: Public speaking, training.

Abstract

Pembelajaran interaktif adalah salah satu metode pembelajaran yang digunakan guru dalam menyajikan pembelajaran. Dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, guru sebagai fasilitator menciptakan situasi yang interaktif dan edukatif yang melibatkan siswa dalam proses belajar guna menunjang tercapainya tujuan pembelajaran. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang dilakukan di SMK Nurul Huda Pringsewu bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan kepada para siswa di sekolah tersebut untuk dapat belajar Bahasa Inggris secara aktif dan terlibat secara langsung dalam setiap aktifitas pembelajaran. Selain itu meningkatkan kesadaran siswa akan pentingnya penguasaan Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 35 siswa SMK Nurul Huda Pringsewu yang terdiri dari jurusan Farmasi dan Keperawatan. Terdapat empat sesi dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini, yaitu: 1) penyampaian materi tentang  motivasi pentingnya belajar Bahasa Inggris, 2) tips and trik dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris, 3) pembelajaran interaktif melalui penerapan role play dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, dan 4) sesi tanya jawab dan feedback.  Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukan bahwa para siswa yang pada awalnya memiliki motivasi yang rendah dan persepsi kurang baik terhadap pelajaran Bahasa Inggris merasa antusias selama proses pelatihan dan menjadi termotivasi untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris. Hal ini ditunjukan dengan respon positif siswa selama mengikuti kegiatan dan hasil interview terkait persepsi siswa terhadap kegiatan.

Abstract

Pembelajaran aktif atau active learning merupakan salah satu strategi yang efektif untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris karena sifat pembelajaran bahasa itu sendiri membutuhkan interaksi satu sama lain. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang dilakukan di MA Ma’arif 9 Kotagajah, Lampung Tengah bertujuan untuk memberikan pendampingan kepada para siswa di sekolah tersebut untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris secara aktif dan terlibat secara langsung dalam setiap aktifitas pembelajaran. Terdapat empat sesi dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini, yaitu: 1) penyampaian materi dan motivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris, 2) tips and trik, serta best practice dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris, 3) penerapan active learning dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, dan 4) motivasi lanjut studi setelah menguasai Bahasa Inggris. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukan bahwa para siswa yang pada awalnya memiliki motivasi yang rendah dan persepsi kurang baik terhadap pelajaran Bahasa Inggris mengalami peningkatan motivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris setelah mengikuti kegiatan pendampingann pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Hal ini ditunjukan dengan respon positif siswa selama mengikuti kegiatan dan hasil kuesioner terkait persepsi siswa terhadap kegiatan. Kegiatan serupa sebagai kelanjutan proses pembelajaran juga diharapkan guna tercapai tujuan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris secara menyeluruh. Abstract

Speaking is an essential skill that students should master because it requires oral communication such as, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. This study aims to determine the correlation between speaking class anxiety and their English skills. The participants in this study were sixth semester students majoring in English Education, Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia which consisted of 39 students. This research technique uses quantitative research. The research instrument was that students were asked to fill out a questionnaire about speaking anxiety which was distributed via a google form link and then the data would be analyzed with the help of SPSS 15.0 and Ms Excel 2007. The questionnaire was adopted from the Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale (PSCA). The questionnaire contains 20 questions related to anxiety problems in speaking class with 5 scale criteria starting from strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree and strongly disagree. From the result of the correlation between speaking anxiety and English proficiency scores, it can be concluded that students with high level of speaking anxiety had lower EPT scores than student with lower speaking anxiety level.

Abstract

One of the problems and inhibitions of students’ learning development is anxiety. Students’ in Indonesia learn online from home in an effort to limit social restrictions during the pandemic covid-19. From this online learning, there is also anxiety felt by students’. The purpose of this study is to find out what are the anxieties felt by students’ in online learning during this pandemic that have an correlation with their last GPA score and EPT (English proficiency test) score. This research was designed using quantitative correlational study with independent variables. The data of this study was taken from English Education Students’ of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia and the sample obtained in this study was 39 students’ who take Quantitative Research class. The instruments used in collecting the data are questionnaire and the last GPA EPT score. Statistical analysis of Pearson product-moment correlation and SPSS software  was used to find the correlation between the variables. The result of this study showed that there were negative correlation between anxiety and students’ GPA and EPT scores. The correlation was 0.925, and the t-table was lower than the T-test. As a result, it is entirely possible to conclude that anxiety has a statistically significant impact on student achievement.
