Abstract

This research aims to find out correlation between grammar and speaking skill of the third semester students of English Education Study Program academic year 2019/2020 at IAIN Datokarama Palu. 28 participants of correlational research were asked to describe themselves, daily routines, and unforgettable experience. Then, they were assigned to do grammar test. The data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The result shows that the correlation coefficient between students’ grammar and speaking skill is 0.46. The result is categorized “moderate” (0.40 to 0.59). It indicates that there is positive correlation between the students’ grammar and speaking skill which means that grammar contributes to speaking skilll, but grammar is not the main predictor of speaking skill achievement. There are some other aspects of speaking affecting the students’ speaking skill, i.e accuracy (in terms of vocabulary and pronunciation), fluency, and comprehensibility. The implication of this finding to the teaching of speaking skill is that the lecturers need to integrate the teaching of speaking skill with grammar and other supporting aspects, like vocabulary and pronunciation.

Abstract

The difference between online and offline learning impacts the students' achievements in English learning. This study aimed to analyze the comparison between students' achievement in offline and online English learning. This study used mixed methods research between quantitative and qualitative research methods. The population of this research was 113 students. The researcher used the purposive sampling technique and took 28 respondents as the study's sample. The instrument of this study was students' achievement data, interviews, and observation. The result shows that the student who learned in offline learning had a higher score than those who learned in online learning. It was proved by the average score that students obtained. Students who knew offline got a score of 78.93. Meanwhile, students who learned online got a score of 75.00, indicating that offline learning is more effective than online learning. The data showed Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 less than 0.05. That value significantly differed between students' online and offline learning achievement. These happen because of several problems that affect student achievement; students' less cohesiveness, being uncomfortable studying, lacking attention and motivation, and the limitations of supporting facilities in learning. It makes students lazy to learn English.

Abstract

Action research has been a prominent topic in continuous professional development literature. Studies have evidenced its potentials for teachers, but not many have discussed the sustainability of the research as a means of Teacher Professional Development (TPD) as well as its sustainable impact. Underpinning the issue of sustainability, the present study aims at investigating what factors made the teachers choose to continue conducting teacher action research, and what pedagogical and professional competences perceived changed as sustainable impacts of Teacher Action Research (TAR). This qualitative study with a phenomenological undertone adapted Seidman’s framework to conduct in-depth interviews with five English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. The results showed that motivation and self-efficacy belief, institutional supports, and collaboration with academics/universities were essentials for sustainable engagement with the research. Pedagogically, the teachers increased their awareness of the students’ characteristics, knowledge of effective learning, and ability to carry out reflective teaching. In terms of professional competence, they felt very confident and were able to make more publications. This study implies that TAR is a model of TPD that is able to develop EFL teachers’ professionalism where they can establish a better practice and develop themselves as professionals and individuals on daily basis, without leaving their students.

Abstract

Background: The objective of writing instruction is to equip students with the ability to proficiently comprehend and produce various types of texts, such as monologues, paragraphs, or essays. So, finding and applying appropriate teaching methods to teach writing skills is necessary. Methods: The subjects of this research were the students at grade VIII of SMP Negeri 3 Bambalamotu that consisted of 22 students. This research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) covering plan, action, observation, and reflection. This research was carried out in two cycles. The first meeting focused on explanation of the materials through the syntax of Genre-Based Approach; 1. BKOF (Building Knowledge of the Field), 2. MCOT (Modeling Construction of the Text), 3. JCOT (Join construction of the Text) and 4. ICOT (Independent Construction of the Text). And the second meeting focused on evaluation. Results: The data of this research were obtained from observation, field notes, and writing test. In the initial test of cycle 1, it was evident that the students did not meet the success standards as they struggled to write descriptive paragraphs. However, the test results in cycle 2 revealed that the introduction of the GBA (Guided-By-Approach) effectively enhanced the students' writing abilities. By following the stages outlined in the GBA, the challenges faced by students in writing can be reduced. Conclusion: three key elements of the GBA, namely collaboration, joint construction, and independent construction, contribute to the potential for improvement in students' writing skills.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has caused a rapid and massive change in the education sector across the world and left no choice to teachers to maintain their status quo. As a country with very diverse geographical and technological conditions, Indonesia has felt the severe impact of this pandemic. This study explores how Indonesian English as foreign language (EFL) teachers struggle to adapt to the online teaching process, identifies the challenges they encountered during the online teaching and learning process, and investigates their strategies in coping with the associated challenges to ensure the learning objectives were achieved. This study employed photovoice as a visual research methodology to capture the new phenomena and answer the research objectives by inviting four English teachers from three different islands, Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi to share their experiences and strategies for survival. The results indicated that Indonesian EFL teachers suffered from challenging experiences, including the trial and error of learning management system (LMS) choice, and were confronted with unpleasant feedback from the students. This study also identified poor internet connection and low online student participation as the main issues. To deal with such problems, especially with low student participation, they viewed disadvantaged situations as a trigger to improve their creativity.

Abstract

This research aims to prove whether the use of problem-based learning method assisted with story mapping can improve the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Palu. The researcher applied a quasi-experimental research design. The sample was selected through a purposive sampling technique, consisting of experimental and control groups with a total sample of 60 students. The data were collected through a reading test consisting of the pre-test and post-test. The collected data was analyzed statistically using SPSS 22. By using a 0.05 level of significance with the degree of freedom (58), the researcher found the sig. value was smaller than the chosen alpha level (0.001<0.05). It reveals that the hypothesis is accepted or the use of Problem-based Learning method assisted with Story Mapping can improve the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Palu. The implication of the findings were the use of PBL method assisted with story mapping can train students’ thinking and collaborative skills, thus making them more actively participate in the discussion and engage in critical and creative thinking

Abstract

This study aims to know whether or not the use of authentic materials can improve reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Palu. This research used a quasi-experimental research design. The research population was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Palu which consisted of 311 students. The sample was selected by using a purposive sampling technique. The number of the sample was 27 students of class VIII E as the experimental group and 26 students of class VIII K as the control group. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test about reading. The students were assigned some tasks consisting of 10 multiple-choices and 5 essay questions. The result of this research showed the mean deviation score of the experimental group was 14.66 and 5.08 for control group. Therefore, the t-counted value (4.74) is higher than the t-table value (1.66). It is proved that the hypothesis is accepted in which there is development of the students after getting the treatment. It means that the use of Authentic Materials can improve students Reading comprehension. The implication of this finding is that the teachers need to use authentic material as the media in teaching reading.
