This research is a qualitative descriptive research that aims to see the level of strategy used by smart students who get the value A. data collection techniques used in this study is a questionnaire and focus group discussion of students majoring in English year entered 2016/2017. Based on the research, it was found that dominant students use affective strategies with an average of 4.8 high levels. Metacognitive strategies also get high level results with an average of 4.6. Here are the medium levels on the cognitive strategy with an average of 2.9, the social strategy with an average of 2.8, the compensation strategy with an average of 2.74 and the strategy memory with an average of 2.70. So it can be concluded that affective strategy is the dominant strategy used by smart students who score A in English majors.Keywords: Speaking, Language learning strategy, Student is smart

Teacher's strategy in teaching English determines students’ motivation in learning English.Students who have low motivation in learning English have been identified as having low competence in English. This study intended to figure out how is Students’ motivation in learning English after the practice of Teacher-in-Role(TiR).Teacher-in-Role is one of the elements of Drama on process and as the starting point for this research to enhance students’ motivation in learning English. Students areencouragedto express their thoughts and feelings while evaluating their own attitudes and skills as they consider the feelings and beliefs of others. The study employed descriptive qualitative and quantitative design. There were 32 students that have observed and involved in this research. The data were collected by using instruments, namely: questionnaire sheet and focus group discussion. Based on the data analysis, it was found that , students’ motivation after the practice of Teacher-in-Role has shown a good result. It concluded from three indicators of motivation that have been observed. Those are positive manner, desire to integrated and more persistence in learning English. The percentage of each aspects is quite higher. Students were exited, fun, and enjoy the learning process while they were practicing Teacher-in-Role, albeit some students uttered that they were worried and afraid making mistakes while talking English because of the lack of vocabularies.

PPG (Pendidikan Profesi Guru) is an education program to prepare Bachelor graduates to be professional teachers in every subject they carry. PPG program is aimed to solve issues that emerge among teachers and improve their teaching competencies. This research is conducted to obtain information from School Principals in 50 Kota Regency and Payakumbuh City whose English teachers have graduated from the PPG Program at least two years ago (from 2019 backwards) regarding the impact of PPG program on teacher’s pedagogical and professional competencies. 21 in-service English teachers and two pre-service English teachers has been involved as the sample of this research. The type of this research is survey research with quantitative method. The data were collected by using close-ended and open-ended questionnaire distributed through Google-form. The findings of this research shows that PPG Program has brought positive impact towards English teachers’ performance according to school principals’ assessment. The majority of English teacher are considered worthy to sit on the positive scoring criterion. Although the numbers that falls under negative scoring criterion is arguably ignorable, English teachers still encounter minor issue that may or may not re-emerge throughout the years. The results and findings from this study are expected to improve the process of conducting PPG program so that later it will be able to produce a better quality of certified teachers. Furthermore, for the Ministry of Education and Culture as the one in charge of PPG program to improve and create a better education system in PPG program.

Abstract This paper aims to explain the reader how to teach junior high school by implementing idea listing technique. Idea Listing technique is an appropriate technique to teach writing. The product of writing is affected by the content as one as component of writing. Content is dominated by how brainstorming goes. In writing students often get problem in organizing their ideas or brainstorming their ideas that has big impact to produce a good writing. ILT can help students to overcome or solve the problem. It becomes the reason why this paper is written. In Idea Listing technique students are asked to produce the idea in short time and put it on the paper to keep their idea and then relate it with the topic. This technique is more effective and suitable to solve the problem and can improve students writing, attention, ability and motivation in writing process. Key words: Writing, Teaching Writing, ILT

This study was students’ ability in understanding noun clause and its function: a study of students’ English department at UNP. The type of this research was descriptive quantitative research. According to the result of the research, the mean score of the students was 61.76. the students’ abilities in understanding noun clause and its function that had 2 students or 8% were included in the highest score or having excellent level. 8 students or 32% students were included in good level. Then, 10 students or 40% were included in fair level, 4 students or 10% students were included in poor level and 1 students or 4% students were included in very poor level. It shows that the students’ ability in understanding noun clause and its function of the students’ English language and literature department in academic year 2018 at UNP had fair level by mean score 61.76. They also do not master the concept of noun clause and how to use the noun clause itself in a sentence, and also they never practicing of the use of noun clause and its function well.

PPG (Pendidikan Profesi Guru) is a program that prepares qualified teachers by BAN PT (National Accreditation Body for University). The program aims to increase teacher’s competences and to become qualified teachers to teach in the real field. This research aims to find the perceptions of 50 in-service English teachers participating in PPG programs in 2018 and 2019 at Universitas Negeri Padang. The type of research used in this research was qualitative research. The data were collected through open-ended and close-ended questionnaire distributed by Google-form. The findings of the research show that the PPG program provides a lot of knowledge for teachers’ pedagogical and professional competence that can be applied in the implementation of duties and responsibilities as a teacher. In general, almost all teachers perceived that the implementation of the PPG program was going well and punctually, although there were still some teachers who complained about several problems through this program. These findings can be used as a recommendation for PPG Program planner to improve the quality system of PPG program especially online learning, workshop and teaching practice based on in-service English teacher perception.Keywords: Perception, Teacher Certification Program, Online Learning, Workshop and Teaching Practicum

This research is an experimental research. This research employed pre-experimental design using quantitative approach with one group pre-test and post-test design. The quantitative data are obtained from the teacher's final video recording. The research aims to determine the effectiveness of reflective practice with video recording on English teachers’ teaching performance in UNP. The population of this research was English teachers of PPG participants of Universitas Negeri Padang in Academic Year 2021. The research sample was 19 In-service English Teachers of Teachers Certification Program (PPG) of Universitas Negeri Padang. As this is the quantitative research, the researcher used the Paired Sample T-test in SPSS 22 for Windows to analyze the data. It is found that the mean score of teachers’ teaching performance has decreased by 4.21 points, bringing the average score down from 83.49 to 79.28. Therefore, the degree of significance of 2.5% or 0.025 was used by the researcher, hence, it is found that the significance (2-tailed) value on teachers’ teaching performance was 0.029 > 0.025 which means that H0 was accepted and Ha was rejected. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the use of reflective practice with video recording has no significant effect on English teachers’ teaching performance.

The importance of being an effective EFL teacher becomes a crucial issue because in Indonesian educational curriculum, English is taught as a subject matter at junior and senior high schools. English teachers, hold significant roles inside of the classroom in order to meet the objectives of curriculum. This study aimed to investigate the teachers’ perception toward the characteristics of effective EFL teachers at junior and senior high school in Padang, from the aspects of pedagogical competency, English language pedagogical competency, personal competency, social competency, and professional competency. The data were collected by using two-section questionnaire which consisted of close and open-ended questions distributed to 26 English teachers of junior and senior high schools in Padang. The results showed that the stakeholders emphasized on pedagogical competency, such as preparing English lesson well (M=4.88) and managing class time well (M=4.81) as the most important characteristics of an effective EFL teacher. As a whole, teachers perception are at good category.

The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, has released a textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris Textbook for Grade 10 Students. This research aimed to determine to what extent the feasibility of the content and presentation of the textbook are. This research is an evaluative research. The data of this research were taken from Bahasa Inggris Textbook for Grade 10 Students Published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture and were analyzed using the evaluation format proposed by BSNP (2014). The evaluation format contains 18 indicators that are used to determine the quality of the textbook. The result of this research showed that the aspect of feasibility of the content is fulfilled 71.5% or categorized good, while the feasibility of the presentation got 72.3% or categorized good. By referring to the results above, this textbook can be categorized as a good reference since there are only 3 of 18 indicators that were not fulfilled; 1) the completeness of the material, 2) development of diversity, and 3) focus on the scientific approach and learning model discovery learning, and project-based learning. In contrast, the other 15 criteria have been fulfilled by this book.

This paper discussed the usage of guessing game in teaching writing, especially descriptive text. Student in junior high school like playing but tend to easily get bored. These required teachers to be more creative and not monotonous in explaining materials. Game can be used to attract students’ attention. However in doing so teachers need to choose the appropriate an useful game, especially for teaching writing descriptive text. Guessing game is appropriate and effective to be used in the classroom. It is a game in which a students or a groups of students guess a number of information such as titles, words, or prices. By playing this game, students can learn by playing. The researcher expects that teachers can add more creativity in teaching descriptive text by enganging students in interesting activities. The students are also expected to develop ideas from their activities easier.
