Abstract

The aim of this research is to see the effect of implementing Process Drama on students’ ability in doing story telling at grade 10th students of SMA N 1 Gunung Tuleh in  2021/ 2022 academic year. Pre-experimental with one group pre and post-test design was the design that used in this research. The population was the tenth grade students at SMA N 01 Gunung Tuleh that consisted of six classes. Purposive sampling was technique sampling that used to choose the sample. The samples were X science 1 students as the experimental class and control class. Telling two stories entitled Bawang Merah & Bawang Putih and Malin Kundang were the instrument of this research. The paired sample t-test was used to obtain the finding of the research .The paired sample t-test revealed a sign 2-tailed value of 0.00, or less than 0.05.Therefore, the first hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. Through the implementation of Process Drama, students are becoming more adept in doing storytelling. The data's output suggested that students could improve their ability in doing story telling through Process Drama.

Abstract

Considering the long-recognized contribution of reflective practice on teachers’ continuous professional development, this article casts new light in reporting English teachers’ and lecturers’ perceptions on the needs to implement reflective practice through video recording during peer teaching in the Indonesian Teacher Certification Program. This needs analysis is conducted as the preliminary step of the Research and Development (RD) project and the data will be taken as the basis for the development of reflective practice model with video recording in peer teaching. The perceptions of the needs were collected through a closed and open-ended questionnaire distributed to two groups of respondents. The first group consisted of pre- and in-service English teachers who participated in the PPG (Pendidikan Profesi Guru) Program, or Teacher Certification Program, during the course of 2018 and 2019; and are now teaching secondary school students within the provinces of West and North Sumatra, Aceh, Jambi, and Riau. The second group was lecturers at the English Language Education Program (ELEP) of Universitas Negeri Padang teaching at the PPG Program. The findings show that most teachers believed that reflective practice using video recording enabled them to see their teaching strengths and weaknesses and, in return, would be able to improve students’ learning outcomes. Similarly, all lecturers also believed that the needs of reflective practice assisted by digital technologies are highly important. In general, the perceptions of these two groups of respondents demonstrate the crucial needs of implementing reflective practice with video recording during peer teaching in the PPG Program.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine how SMA Negeri 6 Sijunjung students felt about using Canva as a teaching tool. This study used a quantitative method to collect data and was a descriptive study with 32 statements on a Likert scale with five scales: 1 (strongly disagree), 2 (disagree), 3 (neutral), 4 (agree), and 5 (strongly agree). The statements were divided into four categories: interest, concern, object, and environment. A total of 19 students from SMA Negeri 6 Sijunjung composed the study's sample. Item validity, namely the product moment, is used in the validity test. Cronbach's alpha was used to test the instrument's reliability, and the reliability value was 0.906. The descriptive method of data analysis was presented as a percentage. The findings showed that students had a positive view of Canva as a tool for learning English. In particular, the positivity of the statements for the sake of interest (7 statements) was above the mean total (4.23%), the positivity of the statements for the sake of concern (8 statements) was above the mean total (4.22%), the positivity of the statements for the object (7 statements) was above the mean (4.16%), and the positivity of the statements for the environment (10 statements) was above the mean (3.90%). As a result, Canva was seen positively by the students at SMA N-6 Sijunjung as a media for learning English.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the suitability of the Lesson plan design based on the Kurikulum Merdeka by English Teachers and also their understanding of the Lesson Plan at UNP Laboratory Junior High School. Two teachers at UNP Laboratory Junior High School were assigned to given their Lesson plan design and were interviewed about their understanding of the Lesson plan. Qualitative analyses were employed in the research which using qualitative descriptive approach to describe the suitability analysis of the Lesson plan design by English Teachers, while data from interview were transcribed, classified and the draw conclusion. The result from the qualitative suitability analysis showed that the Lesson plan design by English Teachers at UNP Laboratory Junior High School quite an accordance, the Lesson plan has the complete components although it has some drawbrack. The interview result showed that teachers understanding of the Lesson plan is good. Even the teachers has good understanding in the Lesson plan but they still need training in designing Lesson plan, so the teacher will be more prepared in designing Lesson plan based on the Kurikulum Merdeka.

Abstract

The aims of the study to know how supervisors’ and students’ perception of online thesis consultation for supervisors and students in English Language and Literature Department at UNP. This study used descriptive quantitative research to investigate the perceptions of students and supervisors regarding online thesis consultation. This research used questionnaire and interview to collect the data. The sample of this research was 30 students of final semester period 2017 and 2018 and 7 supervisors who filled out questionnaires. The questionnaire in this study is a closed questionnaire that is used to gather information.It was designed based on the aspect of successful online consultation and aspect of effective communication . The interview guidelines was designed based on the aspect of successful online consultation. The results of the perception of 7 supervisors showed 81.75 % and 30 students showed that 76.6 % was in good category or positive. But from the supervisor it is still classified as negative based on the interview. Based on the results of the interview, the students had negative and positive perceptions about online thesis consultation. The positive, online consultation had more efficient and flexible time, cost effective, and the results of discussed with supervisor can be recorded. While negative perceptions is delayed feedback or responses, misunderstanding, lack of unlimited Zoom Meetings.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect of using  Duolingo application on English learning motivation and vocabulary enrichment for the 10th grade  students at SMKN 1 Padang. This research used a Quantitative Research Method which is pre-experimental. The population of this research was the 10th  grade students at SMKN 1 Padang, which was X TKP A is the experiment class and the total sample was 22 students. The data collection techniques were motivation questionnaire and vocabulary enrichment test. The results of the study used IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.1.0. and also Paired Sample T-Test formula was used by researcher to analyze the data.  The Mean score for motivation before using Duolingo is 47.86 and after using it is 81.82. Then, the mean for vocabulary enrichment students before using Duolingo is 48.91 which is higher than the mean score after using it is 82.50. The result shows there is a positive effect of English learning motivation and vocabulary enrichment students through using Duolingo. Thus, both of the sig. score  = < .001 which means it is smaller than α.005. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) for English learning motivation and vocabulary enrichment for the 10th grade students were accepted and those null hypothesis (Ho) were rejected in this research. In addition to this result, using the Duolingo Application had significant effect for the 10th grade students on English learning motivation and vocabulary enrichment  in teaching-learning activities in classroom.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine students’ perceptions on using vocabulary journal for mastering vocabulary. There were five aspects investigated, namely the attractiveness, effectiveness, relevance, perceived motivation, and vocabulary aspects. The participants were 65 students of grade XII at Science Program SMAN 12 Padang to whom a questionnaire was given. The data of this research were analyzed using descriptive quantitative method. The results from questionnaire revealed that students had relatively positive perceptions on the use of vocabulary journal for mastering vocabulary. This is shown by the average mean of the questionnaire responses, it was 3.03 out of 4.00. Thus, the findings show that the majority of the students viewed that learning new vocabulary using vocabulary journal was fun and could help them retain the new vocabulary they have learned. Students thought that vocabulary journal is so appropriate to be used in English class and motivated them in learning new words. Most of the students also felt that vocabulary journal helps them in comprehending the use of a certain words and spell the words correctly. It can be inferred that the use of vocabulary journal for vocabulary learning is attractive, effective, relevance, perceived motivation, and promote all the vocabulary aspects.

Abstract

Integrating local cultures in English teaching materials is crucial for promoting cultural diversity, cultural sensitivity, and enhancing their language learning experience. By incorporating local elements, teachers can make the learning content more relatable and engaging for students, ultimately leading to a more inclusive and effective educational environment. The purpose of this study was to find out the integration of local cultures in English teaching materials designed by the pre-service English teachers. The research participants were ten pre-service English teachers (PPG students 2022) from West Sumatera, Jambi, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi. The teaching materials as a source of the data were collected from their teaching experiences during PPG programs. Furthermore, the researcher found the participants through various social media platforms (Instagram, Telegram, and WhatsApp). Through social media, the researcher got the materials. The data was analyzed by using a document checklist based on Moran’s theory. The research showed that local cultures were incorporated in teaching materials designed by pre-service English teachers in three dimensions: product, practices and perspectives dimension.
