Abstract

In essence evaluation is a process. Therefore the implementation of the evaluation of learning includes several stages. In general, the learning evaluation stage consists of 4 stages, namely (1) the preparation stage, (2) the implementation stage, (3) the processing stage of the results, and (4) the follow-up phase. The position of evaluation in the learning process is as the final part of a series of three basic components of the implementation of learning, namely learning objectives, learning activities, and evaluation process and learning outcomes. In practice, evaluation should be realized based on principles that emphasize the importance of the following evaluations: (1) identification of evaluation objectives; (2) select evaluation techniques in relation to those objectives; (3) use evaluation techniques; (4) be aware of technical limitations Evaluation, and (5) consider evaluation as a process of obtaining information to be used as a basis for determining student learning progress. Based on the explanation can be stated that the evaluation is a series of efforts undertaken to obtain information from students / students systematically arranged and based on instructional goals which then used for decision making in education.

It means the students are low in self regulation, but their English achievements are good. This research aimed to know whether there is correlation between students’ self regulation and students’ English learning achievement in studying English. The design of this research was correlation research. Then, the instruments that used in this research were questionnaire for measuring students’ self-regulation and documentation in the form of the students’ mid-semester English test scores for measuring the students’ English learning achievement. The population of this research was all of the eleventh grade students of MAS-TI Candung in the academic year of 2021/2022 which consists of 5 classes. The sample was 30 students taken by simple random sampling technique. To find that self-regulation and English learning achievement have correlation or not, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The finding of this research revealed that the coefficient (ρ) between students’ self-regulation and students’ English learning achievement was 0.690. It means, there is high correlation between students’ self-regulation and students’ English learning achievement. In other words, based on hypothesis testing, the t-score was 0.690 and t-table on α = 0.05 was 0.361. It means the t-score was higher than t-table. Hence, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected which stated that there is a significant correlation between students’ self-regulation and students’ English learning achievement.

This problem occurred because the students were still lack of exposure to the English to provide them with a comprehensible input in acquire the language especially listening skill. Moreover, theories said that watching English movies as a habit could be beneficial and could provide an input to develop students’ listening skill. However, there were not all of the students who had watching movie habit got good score in listening. Nevertheless, there were some of the students who had watching movie habit and got good score in listening. The method used in this research was quantitative method with the correlational design. The population of the research was all of the students from eleventh grade at SMAN 1 IV Koto and the sample was consisted of 33 students. The sample was taken by using random sampling technique. The instruments that were used in this research was questionnaire for measuring the students’ habit in watching English movie and listening comprehension test for measuring students’ listening skill. The researcher used Product Moment Correlation to see if there was any correlation between the two variables. The result showed that the value of correlation coefficient (rxy) was 0.223 which means that there was a positive low correlation between the variable x and variable y. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing showed that the index value rxy was lower than the index value of rt (0.223<0.355) which means that the H0 (null hypothesis) was accepted and Ha was rejected. Thus, there was unsignificant correlation between the variable x and variable y. However, this result may have been affected by internal threats. The students used of subtitle while watching movie was quite high which may prevent them to optimally receive the inputs and acquire the language especially listening skill.

The results of this research showed that the correlation coefficient between the two variables is 0.471. Then the magnitude of the correlation is sufficient, around 0.40-0.60. Thus, there is a positive correlation between students' higher order thinking skills (HOTS) and their English achievement in the seventh grade of SMPN 3 Koto Besar.
