Abstract

This study investigated four moderate indicators coined by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (M0RA) among Muslim students. This study is essential because the MoRA has claimed moderation in its institution, but it has been questioned whether Muslim students studying at Islamic universities have implemented the practice. This article is the result of research with a qualitative approach conducted by conducting interviews with 36 students studying at three Islamic universities in Malang using purposive sampling. It has two focuses: 1) students' religious understanding and practice related to the four moderate indicators of the MoRA; and 2) the cause of the articulation of moderation, which leads to the implication of how to build moderate thoughts in students. The result of the study shows that there are differences in religious understanding and practice regarding the four moderate indicators of the MoRA. Indicators that have problems are tolerance and anti-violence in the intra-religious area, especially among minority sects. Meanwhile, two other indicators, namely national commitment and accommodativeness to local culture, appear to be in a safe area. The study also finds that "problematic" students were from social-humanities and religious study programs. Second, there are many reasons for the emergence of moderation among students, ranging from family background to the organization they are involved in. Thus, the authors present internalization and normalization as means of building moderate thoughts and attitudes in students.

Abstract

This research analyzes the phenomenon of changes in the isnad system in learning on the Qur’an on the Qara'a mobile application. This mobile application provides Al-Qur'an learning services that are supported by machine learning and artificial intelligence to correct the user's reciting of the Qur'an so that they have a "teacher" studying the Qur'an anywhere and anytime. The question then is, why has there been a change in the isnad system in transmitting scientific reciting of the Qur'an to the Qara'a mobile application, and what are the implications caused by this? In explaining the things that have been mentioned, this research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-critical analysis model; this method necessitates a pattern of depiction that does not merely present data objectively but also explains the implications of findings from related data. This research shows that changes in the isnad system in transmitting scientific reciting of the Qur'an are inevitably caused by mediamorphosis with the development of information and communication technology. In this context, this change occurs because of four main things, namely industry needs, demands for other technological needs, supporting legal actions and regulations, and societal pressure. The implications of this change occur in the process of mediamorphosis of the transmission media of reciting Al-Qur'an scholarship or even all of the transmission media of Islamic scholarship and the emergence of machine learning and artificial intelligence as new religious authorities.

Abstract

Al-Suyūṭī's Ṭabaqāt al-Mufassirīn is the first work of tafsir historiography that became the beginning of the ṭabaqāt genre in the field of exegesis. With regard to the explanation of the exegetes' profiles, there is an interesting fact that al-Suyūṭī (d. 911 AH/1505 CE), who is known as a Sunni scholar, also included the names of non-Sunnī mufasirs (Mu'tazilah and Shī'ah). There are at least eight Mu'tazilah and three Shī'ah mufasirs. A number of important non-Sunnī figures he wrote about such as al-Jubbā'Ī, al-Zamakhsharī, Abū Yusūf Al-Qazwīnī, and others. Based on this fact, a question arises, how does al-Suyūṭī present and construct the authority of non-Sunnī mufasirs in the work? However, this question becomes important because al-Suyūṭī himself was of Sunnī ideology and became a Sunnī figure and automatically played a role in the contestation between ideologies at that time. Using a historiographical approach and interpretative analysis, this study shows that al-Suyūṭī's presentation of non-Sunnī figures appears empathetic by not differentiating patterns in describing the profiles of Sunnī and non-Sunnī figures. The construction of non-Sunnī authority is presented by emphasising the expertise of the relevant figures, the works produced, and positive testimonials in other experts related to the field of the Qur'an. This implies how an attitude of fairness, moderation, tolerance, and respect for differences has been shown by Al-Suyūṭī.

Abstract

The Cordoba Qur'an Special for Muslimah features the '319 thematic interpretations regarding women,' which is intended to 'beautify' women by making them pious women. However, the main question is what kind of 'piety' is meant. From this section, it is evident how women are made objects within it. As an interpretation, this prominent feature is never free of interest. This article aims to explain and analyze the construction of women's piety in the related mushaf and its relevance to the aspects of tafsir scholarship and the context of positioning women in life. By using explanatory and correlative analysis of the 319 thematic interpretations specifically for women in the mushaf, this article shows that women's piety is constructed through the process of thematizing Qur'anic verses according to certain understandings through titles that give a convincing impression because they contain narratives of hadith or explanations by Muslim figures. However, the relevance of these interpretations is questionable, both from the aspect of tafsir scholarship and the aspect of women's existence itself. In fact, in some examples of interpretation, certain parts are neglected, such as the context of the verses and the resulting interpretations that tend to be patriarchal. Thus, this issue cannot be ignored. It is not only related to the discourse of interpretive authority but also concerns gender justice, which deserves attention.

Abstract

This study tries to analyze the efforts of Islamic online media in constructing the discourse of delegitimation of nationalism, with the case study of eramuslim.com. With the constructivism paradigm, the ulumu Alqur'an, and critic of Sanad Hadith criticism, through the content analysis of articles in the media over a period of eight years, the results of the study show that the construction model of the discourse of delegitimation of nationalism used by eramuslim.com is a literal or denotative interpretation of the quranic verses and hadith which are considered to have a correlation with the problem of nationalism, as well as criticism of the nationalism system as a divisive people and ideology of fanaticism. There are also symptoms of strengthening the romanticism of religion in Islamic online media, along with symptoms of the obscurity of who has the right to talk about a particular issue.

Abstract

This study is intended to answer three main questions. First, how does the Z generation in Malang City responds to the use of hermeneutics as a method of interpreting the Qur'an by Muslim scholars? Second, how is the process of transmitting their knowledge about it? And third, how is the construction of their knowledge about the ideal interpretation of the Qur'an and can respond to socio-religious dynamics and phenomena? This study is a field study, while the primary respondents are Z generation in Malang City. The use of descriptive, hermeneutic, and intertext analysis models on data, the results of this study showed that there are differences conveyed by the Z generation of Malang City related to the use of hermeneutics as a method of interpretation of the Qur'an: some of them accept it, while others reject it. The transmission of their knowledge about hermeneutics also varies; most of them are correlated with social media, some are still conventional, which relies on information from teachers, and so on. This showed that generation Z of Malang city is not entirely averse to issues that tend to be controversial. Moreover, the authority for interpreting the Qur'an has not entirely shifted from the real world to cyberspace, no matter how dependent they are on the new media.

Abstract

Planting Islamic values from an early age is a fundamental aspect in the process of child education. In this context, Qur'anic exegesis plays an important role as an educative medium that not only conveys religious messages, but also shapes children's character and morals. This study aims to examine how Aam Amiruddin's Seri Tafsir Al-Qur’an Kontemporer for Kids is utilised as a medium for children's education, both in terms of the approach to delivering the material, the language used, and the educational values it contains. This research method includes text analysis, focusing on the internal components of tafsir and the systematic presentation by the author contained in the work. This analysis is done in depth to understand how the presentation of the Qur'anic tafsir becomes a relevant educational medium for children. The results show that this tafsir is compiled using simple, interesting, and dialogical language, by including illustrations, and aligning the content of the Qur'an on daily themes that are relevant to the world of children. The educational values conveyed include faith, worship, morals, and social aspects. Thus, Seri Tafsir Al-Qur’an Kontemporer for Kids proves to be an effective alternative educational media in introducing the content of the Qur'an to children in a fun and educational manner.
