Abstract

The international community's contribution to the conflict in the Middle East did not provide a solution but rather exacerbated the conflict. This gave birth to various criticisms from various parties, both in the form of oral, written, and image. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes five caricatures by @rahma_toons and @hajjaj_cartoons. The theory used in this research is Charles Sanders Peirce's perspective semiotic theory. This research aims to analyze the various elements of icons, indexes, and symbols in the five caricatures uploaded by @rahma_toons and @hajjaj_cartoons. In addition, this study also aims to explain the various icons, indexes, and symbols as a representation of criticism of the conflict that occurred in the Middle East. The results show that the 5 caricatures represent various criticisms. The first criticism is aimed at the UN and Arab countries that only provide symbolic support. The second criticism is aimed at the United States' partiality towards Israel and further aggravating the conflict. The third criticism is aimed at Israel's attack on UNIFIL which shows a violation of international law.

Abstract

As higher education institutions transition toward competency-based frameworks, Outcome-Based Education (OBE) has emerged as a pivotal model for aligning curriculum with measurable learning outcomes. In the context of Islamic higher education, the integration of OBE remains a growing area of interest. This study explores the implementation of the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum in the Arabic Language and Literature Study Program at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. It focuses on insights from the program coordinators and examines the challenges encountered during the implementation process. Employing a phenomenological approach, data were collected from primary sources, including the head and secretary of the study program, through direct observation and in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The findings reveal that the implementation process involves several stages: curriculum review, dissemination of OBE policy to faculty and students, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation. Key challenges include faculty and student readiness to adopt new approaches, resistance to change, difficulties in accurately measuring learning outcomes, limited resources and facilities, and time constraints. To enhance the effectiveness of OBE implementation, it is recommended that institutions provide targeted professional development, improve infrastructure support, and promote a collaborative academic culture. Future research could explore cross-institutional comparisons and long-term impact assessments of OBE-based curriculum reforms.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meanings of identity and resistance in Mahmoud Darwish’s poem Bitaqah Hawiyyah through Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. This poem represents the collective experience of the Palestinian nation that has lost its land and freedom, yet continues to maintain its existence through language and symbols. Using Barthes’ semiotic theory, the analysis focuses on three levels of meaning: denotative, connotative, and mythological, to trace how signs in the poem construct the ideology of resistance. The research findings show that every element in the poem—from the command “Record! I am an Arab,” mentions of family, land, to stones—has a symbolic function that affirms Palestinian Arab identity and rejects colonial domination. Darwish successfully transforms oppressive administrative language into a tool for self-affirmation and collective awakening. At the mythological level, this poem creates a myth of steadfastness and existential continuity, where identity is not merely a social status but a form of cultural and spiritual resistance. Thus, Bitaqah Hawiyyah becomes a manifestation that language can function as a field of struggle and affirmation of Palestinian national identity.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning behind the signs used in advertisements that represent the happiness of Palestinians welcoming Ramadan amid the sorrow of war. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation and screenshots of the advertisements. The analytical framework is based on Peirce’s semiotic theory, which consists of the representamen, object, and interpretant. The findings show that the happiness associated with Ramadan is represented through joyful expressions and shared activities, such as playing, eating together, gathering with family, and acts of solidarity. Meanwhile, sadness is represented through images of destroyed urban buildings, forms of resistance, and issues related to the suffering of residents, particularly children. These findings indicate that Ramadan in Palestinian media representations not only conveys nuances of happiness and tranquility but also functions as a medium for articulating issues of resistance against Zionist Israel.

Abstract

News is a very effective medium in conveying information, messages, and criticism due to its ability to attract wide attention. This study aims to analyze the linguistic aspects, discourse practices, and sociocultural practices in Al-Jazeera news discussing the ceasefire violations by Israel. This qualitative study uses two news items as data sources, collected through reading, sorting, and recording methods. The analysis was conducted using the Critical Discourse Analysis theory approach from Norman Fairclough's perspective. The results show that there are 18 data consisting of linguistic analysis, discourse analysis, and sociocultural analysis that overall convey strong criticism of the ceasefire violations by Israel. Through Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, the study found that the news not only conveys facts but also constructs a critical ideological narrative using analysis of language dimensions, discourse practices, and sociocultural practices as a tool to convey socio-political messages.
