Abstract

Background: Poor nutritional status during the growth and development of toddlers is irreversible. It can affect the inadequate functioning of various body systems, including the nervous and muscular systems that play a role in motor development. The trend of food intake in agricultural areas is vegetable consumption, while low animal protein intake will affect the nutritional status and development of toddlers. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the correlation between nutritional status and motor development in toddlers aged 24-59 months in agricultural areas. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with a sample size of 65 subjects aged 24-59 months in Sumowono, Semarang Regency, Central Java. The variables studied were nutritional status weight-for-age z-scores (WAZ), weight-for-height z-scores (WHZ), and height-for-age z-scores (HAZ) measured using digital and microtome scales, as well as gross motor and fine motor development measurements with observations and interviews based on the Standard of Child Development Achievement (STPPA) questionnaire. Univariate and bivariate data were then analyzed statistically using the Spearman rank correlation test. Results: Based on anthropometric measurements, 10.8% of toddlers were underweight; 1.5% were overweight; 4.6% were wasting; 9.2% had a possible risk of being overweight; and 40% were stunted. A total of 15.4% of toddlers had severe gross motor delays, and 13.8% had fine motor delays. WAZ (p-value=0.003; r=0.366) and HAZ (p-value<0.001; r=0.633) had relationships with gross motor skills. Both WAZ (p-value=0.019; r=0.291) and HAZ (p-value<0.001; r=0.719) also had relationships with fine motor skills. However, there was no relationship between WHZ with gross motor (p-value=0.935) and fine motor (p-value=0.168). Conclusions: Toddlers with good nutritional status (WAZ and HAZ) will have good gross and fine motor development.

Abstract

Covid-19 for three years has become an inseparable part of the lives of urban and rural communities. The impact occurs, such as the impact of Covid-19 on children. Children are a vulnerable part of society during a pandemic, about the conditions for their health, education, and protection. The role of the city in carrying out its duties as a public servant is important, where all stakeholders have an important role. Central Java, one of the provinces affected by Covid-19 has responded well with its adaptive programs. This research was conducted with a quantitative approach with a quantitative descriptive method, starting with an analysis of the role of stakeholders and programs related to Covid-19 prevention for children. The results of the analysis are continued by looking at the spatial pattern between cities and districts. Research data is taken from primary surveys through FGD and document review. The results of the study identify that not all city/district areas have a response to child protection during the Covid-19 pandemic, urban areas are more responsive to this condition. Increasing the role of protection for children during a pandemic is an important part of the process of returning to the new normal.

Abstract

Pregnant women and newborns are particularly vulnerable during public health emergencies in Indonesia, where there is a lack of specific guidance to support these groups when emergent threats (ET) arise. Health workers, crucial in delivering maternal and newborn health (MNH) services, often fail to anticipate and address the needs of these vulnerable populations adequately.A literature review analyzing 24 articles from PubMed, Dimension, and Web of Science published between 2016 and 2024 focused on emerging infectious diseases, maternal and newborn health, quality of care, referral systems, and small vulnerable newborns. The review identified substantial gaps in the skills and competencies needed to provide high-quality MNH services globally and in Indonesia. Key issues include non-compliance with existing guidelines, inefficient referral coordination, insufficient monitoring of sick mothers, and a lack of preparedness for emergent threats, all contributing to suboptimal MNH outcomes. These gaps could be addressed by adopting improved training and referral systems, as proposed in the new SVN conceptual framework. Essential actions to enhance MNH outcomes include improving guideline compliance, enhancing referral systems, and ensuring comprehensive training for healthcare providers. Developing an integrated tool tailored to Indonesia's needs that includes SVN, sick mothers, infrastructure, referral systems, and infectious disease management is vital. Implementing these strategies can significantly reduce adverse outcomes and enhance care quality for women and newborns during public health crises.

Abstract

Introduction: Lead in the environment can be more easily absorbed by individuals with nutritional deficiencies, particularly breastfeeding mothers residing in agricultural areas near lead sources. Contaminated breast milk can disrupt infants' growth and development. This study aims to identify lead contaminants in the environment and assess the nutritional status of breastfeeding mothers to provide preventive measures. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the highland agricultural area of Semarang Regency in October 2021. Environmental samples, including air from agricultural land, settlements, groundwater, and raw food were carried out as environmental samples from 31 breastfeeding mothers. Dietary intake, haemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHC, and lead levels in breast milk was carried out. Lead content was analysed using ICP-OES. Geographic information system (GIS) was used to compare spatial distribution lead status levels with identified exposure factors. Results and Discussion: Median age of breastfeeding mothers was 24 years, with 72% being housewives, having a senior high school education. Median age of the infants was 2.5 months, 32% being boys, and 48% were exclusively breastfed. Mean hemoglobin level of the mothers was 13 ± 1.4 g/dL (13.8% was anemic) and median lead level in breast milk was 0.019 ppm. None of the mothers met their recommended macro- and micronutrient intake. Lead content in foods was 0.02-0.180 ppm, groundwater 0.017-0.034 ppm, and air 0-1.56 μg/Nm3 over a three-hours. Conclusion: The environment surrounding breastfeeding mothers contains lead, particularly in the air, and these mother experiences nutritional deficiencies, thereby increasing the risk of lead absorption.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has changed behavior and community's economic activities in Indonesia, resulting in a decrease in family food security. Good family food security is indicated by adequate food availability both in quantity and quality. Food resources should be safe, diverse, nutritious, evenly distributed, and accessible. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the effect of accessibility to family groceries on family diet practices in Semarang City during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted online in Semarang City in 2022. A total of 108 mothers of elementary school students were recruited using a purposive sampling technique. Data on general characteristics were obtained from an online questionnaire, while data on distance, affordability, sources of health information, and diet practices were obtained using a questionnaire which was then scored. The statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The age of the mothers ranged from 36-45 years (64.8%); most of the mothers had a bachelor's degree (93.5%); the mothers worked (50.9%); the family income level was above Rp 2,800,000 (89.8%). Accessibility to information sources was limited in most cases (57.4%); the mothers' purchasing accessibility was high (63.9%); and they mostly could access food sources (71.3%). Most of the mothers had good diet practices (66.7%). Variables that showed a significant relationship with diet practices were accessibility to foodstuff (p = 0.001). Other variables that contributed to diet practices were the mothers' education (p = 0.040), occupation (p = 0.002), and family income (p = 0.006). Conclusions: There was a relationship between accessibility to food and diet practices.
