Abstract

One of producing areas of natural sand in Riau province is natural sand from Kampar River, when compared with the existence of stone ash, natural sand is easier to obtained and more economical because it does not have to go through crushing process by stone crusher. In accordance with Specifications of Bina Marga 2010, the use of natural sand for the asphalt concrete mixture (AC) should not exceed 15% of total weight of mixture aggregate. Thus it is important to know the efficiency of using natural sand on the asphalt concrete mixture (AC) to get optimum utilization. This research is to determine the optimum bitumen content (OBC) and the optimum content of natural sand (OCNS) which can be used on the asphalt concrete binder coarse mixture (AC/BC) fine gradation. The fine aggregate variations of natural sand used was 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and 40% of the total weight of the mixture of aggregate. The additions of natural sand on the asphalt concrete binder coarse mixture (AC/BC) can decrease values of the optimum bitumen content (OBC) and density. An optimum content of natural sand (OCNS) for the asphalt concrete binder coarse mixture (AC/BC) was obtained by additional of 10% natural sand with the optimum bitumen content (OBC) of 6,45% which the value of the stability of 1.745,96 kg. If natural sand is unlimited as in the Specification of Bina Marga 2010, so possibilities on the additional of natural sand on the asphalt concrete binder coarse mixture (AC/BC) is up to 25 % .Keywords: Natural sand, Asphalt Concrete Binder Coarse (AC/BC), Spesification of Bina Marga 2010, and Marshall characteristic.

Abstract

In Specification of Bina Marga 2010, natural sand can be used as fine aggregate not more than 15% the mixture of total weight. In some areas, especially in the watershed area, it is easy to find natural sand rather than sand or fine aggregate of crushed stone screening, because there is no need crushing process. It just takes to sieved to obtain the size we need. Flexible pavement construction consists of layers were deposited on land that has been compacted which has function to receive traffic load and spread it to the layer below. The impact of load on the traffic so there are tensile stress on pavement, therefore the pavement is expected to has enough strength of sufficient tensile to hold it. The tensile strength can be used as a parameter for assessing the performance of asphalt concrete. This research is to determine the effect of the use on natural sand and how many percent of the optimum sand content obtained in the asphalt mixture type AC-BC by doing indirect tensile strength test. In this research the variation of the fine aggregate type of sand that used is 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and 40% of the total weight of the mixture of aggregate. The results of this research showed that the addition of natural sand on the mixture would increase the tensile strength up to 20% variation in natural sand. Optimum natural sand content (ONSC) for asphalt concrete mix type AC-BC based on the indirect tensile strength test was 20% and the optimum bitument content (OBC) based on the indirect tensile strength test was 6%.Keywords: Natural sand, asphalt concrete AC-BC, Specification of Bina Marga 2010 and Indirect Tensile Strength.

Abstract

The use of natural sand as fine aggregate in AC (Asphalt Concrate) mixture is limited to a minimum value of 15% of total of mixture weight as stated by Bina Marga Spesification 2010. Evaluation from the aspect of utilization cost shows that natural sand is cheaper than fine aggregate from stone crushing process because of no extra cost for crushing. This research aimed to identify the optimum sand content that can be used at fine graded AC/WC mixture. The variation used in this research are 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% of total aggregate mixture. The addition of natural sand makes optimum bitumen content (OBC) will decrease. OBC for natural sand of 0% is 6,4 %, OBC for natural sand of 5% is 6,35 %, OBC for natural sand of 10% is 6,3 %, OBC for natural sand of 15% is 6,25 %, OBC for natural sand of 20% is 6,2 %, OBC for natural sand of 25% is 6,2 % while the OBC for natural sand of 30% is 6,15 %. Optimum natural sand content for asphalt mix AC/WC type is 15% with OBC of 6,25%. With no consideration in the maximum requirement of the use of 15% natural sand in Bina Marga Spesification 2010 natural sand still can be used up to 25% in AC/WC asphalt concrete mixture.  Keywords: natural sand, asphalt concrete AC / WC, Bina Marga Spesification 2010 and Marshall characteristic.

Abstract

In Indonesia the weather condition has big influence on pavement performance and the reductionservice life. Moment happened by floods, repeatedly load repetation and seep water among asphalt and rock representing cause the happening of road pavement damage. The use of natural sand as fine aggregate in AC (Asphalt Concrate) mixture is limited to a minimum value of 15% oftotal of mixture weight. Evaluation from the aspect of utilization cost shows that natural sand is cheaper than fine aggregate from stone crushing process because of no extra cost for crushing. In this reseach, used specification of Bina Marga 2010 by using a variation of fine aggregate type ofsand for  AC/WC fine gradation mixture. The variation used are 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%,and 30% of total aggregate mixture. Tests were performed using the Marshall test with differentimmersion time, i.e. Marshall standard, 1 day, 4 days, 7 days, and 28 days of immersion in the bath with the temperature of 600 C. The result show the variation of performance durability with the addition of natural sand content of 15% in optimum asphalt 6,25% has the smallest value of the first durability index with 6,70%, and durability performance of the mixture with the addition of natural sand content of 15% in optimum asphalt 6,25% has the smallest value of the second durability index with 15,70%. This mixture is more resistant (durable) to the effects of immersion in water. Keywords: natural sand, asphalt concrete AC / WC, Bina Marga Spesification 2010 and durability.
