Abstract

In teaching learning process, there are a lot of students have difficulties in learning English, especially grammar. The students’ mastery in grammar at SMP Taman Siswa Teluk Betung is also still low. Therefore, the objective of the research is to know the influence of using scientific approach in curriculum 2013 towards students’ mastery in present continuous tense at the eighth grade of SMP Taman Siswa Teluk Betung in the academic year of 2015/2016. In this research, the writer used quasi experimental design by employing control group pretest-posttest design and also conducting tryout to get a good instrument. The population of this research was all students at eighth grade of SMP Taman Siswa Teluk Betung which consisted of 130 students in four classes. The writer took two classes as the sample by using cluster random sampling. In the experimental class the writer used scientific approach in curriculum 2013, whereas in the control class the writer used grammar translation method. Each class received the same pretest and posttest. There were five meetings in each class during the research, including one meeting for pretest, three meetings for treatments and one meeting for posttest. In collecting the data, the writer used test in the form of multiple choice question. The data was analyzed by using Mann-Whitney U, because the data were not in normal distribution. Based on the result of the hyphothesis test that is computated by using non-parametric statistics, Mann-Whitney U, it can be seen that the Pvalue (sig)= .000 and <α= 0.05. It means that Ha was accepted and  Ho was rejected. It can be concluded that there was influence of using scientific approach in curriculum 2013 towards students’ mastery in present continuous tense at the eighth grade of SMP Taman Siswa Teluk Betung.

Abstract

Writing an essay is quite tricky since it needs more than pouring all ideas in written form. Those ideas must be organized well since different essays were structured in different ways. However, the core of an essay lies in its thesis statement. It is the answer of the topic question, in which the construction of the rest parts of the essay was dependable on it. Therefore, it is imperative that the students accurately determine correct and focused thesis statement so that their essay will be a good one. Thus, this article tried to analyze students’ thesis statement and the possible causes to not good thesis statement. The results of analysis revealed that students’ thesis statement could be categorized into good thesis statement, good thesis statement with some focus, good thesis statement with too broad focus, quite good thesis statement, and not good thesis statement. The possible causes that emerged and influenced students’ thesis statement were students’ grammatical mastery level and their topical knowledge.

Abstract

Abstract. Gender stereotype is concerning traits and roles possessed by females and males which distinguish them from each other. It dominantly gives the ruinous impact and it possibly appears in a textbook. The objective of this research was to analyze gender stereotypes of visual images in When English Rings A Bell published in 2017. This research was in descriptive qualitative research with content analysis design, and used two components of gender schema theory – feminine and masculine traits, and feminine and masculine occupations. Documentation was applied to collect the data. To carry out the data analysis, the researcher referred to the three stages provided by Ary. The results showed that from trait aspect, generally males and females were described in common, but in two points they were showed differently; many female pictures were described with short and curly hair, and several male pictures were depicted with the bangs on their hair. Moreover, lots of females were described with darker skin, while the bright skin was described for lots of male. The occupations aspect revealed that some occupations were only described for male while the occupations; teacher, meal server, biker, hospital work, and the child care activity, were described for both of male and female. Overall, it could be said that gender stereotypes still dominantly appeared in male and female pictures. Additionally, the presentation of male and female picture showed that male pictures were being the majority, with 265 (54.75%) were male pictures, while 219 (45.25%) were female pictures, it meant that male and female were presented unequally in this textbook. Key words:gender stereotypes, gender schema theory, visual images, textbook

Abstract

This research attempts to investigate the English language learners’ attitude on the online learning of receptive skills, namely listening and reading skills, conducted in English Language Education Department of UIN Raden Intan Lampung. One hundred and twenty-four students of the first year of English Education Department participated in this descriptive quantitative research with online survey design. The data were collected by using a close-ended questionnaire of the ABC model of attitude proposed by Jain which revealed three elements; affective, behavior, and cognition. The questionnaire was administered online to the students who had experienced the process of teaching and learning online in listening and reading courses. The result showed that students’ attitude towards online learning of receptive skills indicated as positive attitude on affective aspect (x̄ = 3.04), behavioral aspect (x̄ = 3.01) and cognitive aspect (x̄ = 3.01) which concerned on the online learning platforms, task completion, lecturers’ strategies in delivering online materials, online group discussion, and receptive skills improvement. In spite of the positive results elicited from this research, there were some limitations encountered such as learning platforms provided by the lecturer, their strategies in teaching receptive skills, and task types which had not been revealed in this research. Thus, for the future research who are interested in doing research in education, it is expected to investigate those areas.
