Abstract

Considering the importance of students’ errors in English learning process, this research was conducted to identify grammatical errors made by the third semester students of Universitas Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa. Two research questions are put forward in this error analysis research. They are (1) What are the grammatical errors types made by the students when they write a recount essay? (2) What is the most grammatical error made by the students? This research applied a descriptive qualitative method with the students’ writing as the key data. The data were collected using the writing assignments of the writing lecturer. James’ theory of grammatical error categories and Corder’s theory of error analysis procedure became the main baseline theories in the data analysis. The data used in this research were collected from 16 scripts written by the third semester students. The findings show that there were 245 errors figured out in students’ recount essays. This research further revealed that 138 (56.3%) of the whole error were related to inappropriate usage of tenses. It was the most dominant error appearing in students’ writings. This category was followed by the errors of prepositions usage with a frequency of 31 (12.6%), poor usage of articles with a frequency of 29 (11.8%), errors of singular/plural with a frequency of 21 (8.6%), improper use of irregular verbs with a frequency of 11 (4.5%), poor usage of adjectives with a frequency of 7 (2.9%), inability to apply the rules of concord with a frequency of 6 (2.5%), and possessive case with a frequency of 2 (0.8%). These errors indicated students lacked of grammatical knowledge and had not been able to write an acceptable writing especially a recount text.

This scaffolding is applied to strengthen the character of junior high school students in Yogyakarta Special Region to become Pancasila students. This is a research and development study that applies a qualitative approach. The respondents of this study were teachers, principals, students, parents, and supervisors of junior high schools in this province. Data were collected using focus group discussion, interview, and observation, then were analyzed using Miles and Huberman models, which comprised data reduction, data display, and inference stages. The results of this study is a character education strengthening model during learning from home applying Ki Hajar Dewantara’s scaffolding concept. This model contributes to the policymaking of character education strengthening during the learning from home online.

Abstract

Background: In the past ten years or so, the publication of research journal articles has been increasing and growing. The development is even more significant when the Higher Education in Circular Letter No.152 / E / T / 2012 requires article writing for students of all levels as one of the graduation requirements. The publication of articles, especially in English-language journals, is a challenge for Indonesian authors to be able to produce scientific papers that not only meet scientific rules but also linguistic rules in English. Methodology: This study aims to see the function of rhetorical moves in English journal articles published in SINTA-accredited journals. The part of the article to be studied is focused on the Introduction which has the main role of providing general information about the research background. The rhetoric function of this article will show a series of texts that have a specific function in the Introduction. The sample of this study was taken from articles in the SINTA-accredited journals level 2 and written in English written by authors of non-English-language disciplines. Two articles were randomly selected from each journal so in total it amounted to 16 articles. Findings: This study looks at what rhetorical functions were used, and the textuality of the rhetorical functions used in the Introduction to articles written and published in SINTA-accredited journals level 2. “Indicating the Structure of the Research Paper” and “Announcing Principal Findings” were the least two rhetorical functions stated by the authors in the Introduction section. Two articles in this study fulfil the textuality components but the rests fail to fulfill the textuality components. Conclusion: Writing journal articles in English is a great challenge for Authors with an English as a foreign language (EFL) background. Language proficiency, academic language mastery, academic writing convention and mechanics awareness which include rhetorical functions and textuality might distract their content writing competence. Originality: Many studies searched the rhetorical functions of postgraduate theses, journal articles, and thesis abstracts in English written by non-native English; however, research on journal articles by Indonesian journal publishers is limited.

Abstract

This study aims to answer two main questions: How do the evaluation results reflect the news script writing skills of third-semester students in the Manarita STMM study program? And what aspects of writing English news scripts need to be improved by students in the Manarita program at STMM? This study applied a qualitative method, specifically a single case study design. The subjects of the study consisted of 20 students and one lecturer in charge of the English Journalism course. The results of the study showed that students still had difficulty in writing news scripts, in the straight news type. The main challenges found included difficulty in compiling news according to journalistic standards and maintaining clarity and accuracy in writing in English. The two aspects that needed the most development were the Associated Press (AP) Style and headline writing. Many students experienced obstacles in the use of grammar, punctuation, and the application of AP Style conventions, which caused inconsistencies in their news scripts. In addition, students also had difficulty in writing interesting and concise headlines so they were less able to summarize the contents of the news effectively. The results of this study emphasize the need for more in-depth training and learning related to AP Style and headline writing to improve students' news writing skills. Providing more intensive training, more specific feedback, and exposure to professional journalistic writing can help students overcome these obstacles. This study highlights the importance of strengthening English journalism learning so that students are better prepared to produce news that meets professional standards.

Abstract

Background: Style plays an important role in fostering productive interactions between teachers and students when learning English as a foreign language (EFL). Using the right style can improve information delivery and allow for the creation of a positive classroom environment. Three of Martin Joos' Five Clocks Theory: formal, consultative, and informal, are considered the most relevant in the context of Education. The findings are significant in helping teachers in vocational schools adjust their language style to enhance student communication and comprehension. Methodology: This study applied a descriptive qualitative approach with a purposive sampling technique. Seven English teachers from one of the vocational schools in Yogyakarta became respondents for the questionnaire, and two other teachers were interviewed for in-depth data. The data were analyzed using the Miles & Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Findings: The questionnaire results showed that the consultative register, the formal, and the casual were the most to least used, respectively. In-depth interviews revealed that teachers adjusted their language style based on the context of delivering the material and the relational closeness with students. The formal register functions to deliver structurally complex material, while the casual register is used to build closer relationships with students. Conclusion: The use of registers helps improve learning outcomes by enabling teachers to deliver material accurately while building rapport with students, resulting in a more interactive learning environment, increased motivation, and a deeper understanding of the learning material. Combining formality and closeness through consultative and casual registers is an important strategy for teachers in adjusting their teaching approaches. Originality: This study contributes to the theory of communicative language teaching in which registers used by EFL teachers emphasize the meaningfulness of language. This study also contributes to classroom communicative theory by highlighting how teachers and students communicate to enhance students' engagement, social dynamics, and learning outcomes.
