Abstract

The English skills for the nursing students in Indonesian Higher Education need to be prepared to be able to increase the English communication skills and to avoid miscommunication and malpractice. English in Indonesia is regarded as Foreign Language, so it is not surprising if many nurses still have low English skills. Managing “English for Nursing” (EfN) course in higher education should be constructed with effective approaches one of which is constructivism. Constructivism in EfN is better conducted with some techniques including the use of technology, flash cards /situation cards, real medical tools, and forms. Hence, the students will understand the contextual situation and can construct the appropriate expressions. The implementation of the constructivist uses in EfN classes must be adjusted with the students’ level to achieve the purpose.

Abstract

Today, international communication plays a vital role for facing the global challenges and English as Lingua Franca is quite helpful to serve the purpose of communication with people from different countries. In pesantren world, English is very essential to teach and “English-Tren” can be a way of asssisting santri to develop the santris’ speaking skill. “English-Tren” is English for Pesantren, a branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), designed to meet the target of Pesantren in improving Santris’ English skills especially speaking. This study aims to explain how is English-Tren implemented in developing santris’ English Speaking Skill. This study is a case study with the setting in Pondok Pesantren Darussalam Dukuhwaluh Purwokerto promoting the santris’ improvement in speaking skill through the course of “English-Tren”. The data collection techniques included interview to three English teachers and five santris supported by observation and documentation. The result shows that English-Tren is implemented through three ways namely Morning English biweekly, English taught as a subject in madrasah diniyah classes, and English taught and practiced in English program. Hence, English-Tren is influential in developing santris’ English speaking skill.

Abstract

Tes TOEFL merupakan salah satu tes yang banyak dibutuhkan untuk kegiatan-kegiatan akademik seperti syarat kelulusan, syarat mendaftar beasiswa, bahkan syarat kenaikan jabatan. Pentingnya penguasaan TOEFL membuat pelatihan TOEFL begitu diminati oleh berbagai kalangan termasuk dosen dan mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, tim pengabdian merasa perlu untuk mengadakan pelatihan TOEFL bagi berbagai kalangan. Bekerja sama dengan Balai Latihan Kerja Komunitas (BLKK) Darussalam, tim pengabdian mengadakan pelatihan TOEFL yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan score TOEFL para peserta yang terdiri dari mahasiswa dan dosen. Pelatihan dilakukan secara intens selama 12 kali pertemuan. Setelah pelatihan selesai, nilai TOEFL peserta mengalami kenaikan dari nilai rerata 400 menjadi 430. Tanggapan peserta mengenai rangkaian kegiatan pelatihan juga cenderung positif. Hasil angket menunjukkan bahwa masing-masing item pada angket mendapatkan persentase tertinggi pada pilihan setuju dan sangat setuju. Kesimpulannya, pelatihan membawa dampak yang positif yang dibuktikan dengan adanya kenaikan nilai TOEFL dan tanggapan yang positif dari peserta pelatihan.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types of grammatical errors on Instagram captions written by K-Popers. The existence of social media has become a common communication among K-Popers national and international boundaries. Instagram is one of the social media platforms which has received a lot of attention from K-Popers. K-Popers usually upload their idols’ photos or videos on Instagram, and they usually use English as their caption to make it is easy to understand by K-Popers around the world. Through the English captions on Instagram, grammatical errors often occur in their English. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher chose the accounts from hashtag #kpopshoutout. The researcher had figured out the data which were posted on January to April 2021 from six K-Popers which have been chosen in the form of sentences on Instagram captions. Five K-Popers in different accounts which have been chosen by the researcher, they were: @jsoo.yaaa_, @do.exokyung, @bts.bighotofficial, @bts.bighitotfical, and @nutshell.skz.The researcher analyzed 50 captions from six K-Popers accounts. Based on the analysis result by using Dulay’s theory, there are four types of grammatical errors based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy, they are omission, addition, mis-formation, and mis-ordering. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that omission was the most type of grammatical error and addition was the least type of grammatical errors that the researcher found in this research.

Abstract

In the twentieth century, when the study of cultural anthropology suggested that linguistic barriers were insuperable and that language was entirely the product of culture, the translation must be as literal as possible. This resulted in confusion among translators when translating a text, not until they were illuminated by Peter Newmark’s "Approaches to Translation". Newmark's idea has been widely used in translator training courses and combines a wealth of practical examples of linguistic theories of meaning with practical applications for translation. However, in this twenty-first century where translation becomes more complex (e.g. political agenda), Newmark’s theory seems to have a deficiency as it does not pay attention to the role of the translators. Therefore, the translation theory needs to be broadened to take into account the value-driven of the human yardstick framework. The present paper aims to provide a critical evaluation of Newmark's theory of translation and to suggest a new theory. It is concluded that Newmark's theory lacks some important criteria to really reach appropriate translation in some cases. Finally, the “Appropriateness Theory” proposed by Woesler (2021, 2) comes to perfect the previous theories and to meet the demands of this twenty-first century translation.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the needs and to design a course for the political sciences based on need analysis. To achieve this goal, a need analysis approach was employed with survey and interview to the social and political science students of Hasanuddin University and the professionals of political sector in the Banyumas Regional Government. The data collected were analysed using language-centred course design approach. The study highlights the specific language skills and communication needs in politics. It provides insights for designing a tailored ESP course by recommending relevant materials, authentic political texts, and interactive activities to enhance language proficiency and political literacy. The implications of this research are significant for English language educators, curriculum designers, and policymakers in the field of political education. By addressing the specific needs of students and providing them with appropriate language support, this study is beneficial to contribute to the academic and professional success of students in the political sector with English.
