Abstract

Implementation of learning that focuses on mastering 21st century skills can be done through Gamification techniques, the use of game design elements in non-game contexts to attract attention, develop character, or solve problems. Several previous studies have proven that gamification can improve learning outcomes and student motivation. However, there has been no specific research regarding gamification which facilitates improving students' mathematical critical thinking abilities. Therefore, this research aims to develop gamification-based mathematics teaching materials specifically designed to improve junior high school students' mathematical critical thinking abilities, as well as testing these products based on aspects of their practicality and effectiveness. The ADDIE model is used in research, but in this article the research steps discussed are limited to the last two stages, Implementation and Evaluation. The sample used was 153 students from 3 junior high schools, IT Hayyatan Thoyyibah Middle School, Pelita YNH Middle School, and ITQ Al-Fath Middle School, taken using a cluster random sampling technique. Data was collected through the FRISCO critical thinking ability test instrument and student response sheets. Data were analyzed using one sample t test, paired two sample t test, and descriptive analysis. The research results show that gamification-based mathematics teaching materials have met the practical criteria and are effectively used in mathematics learning, especially in improving junior high school students' critical mathematical thinking skills in the moderate improvement category.

Abstract

Students often experience difficulties in learning mathematics, particularly in solving word problems. Consequently, students make many errors when answering story questions in mathematics. The aim of this research is to describe students' mistakes according to Polya's theory in solving story problems on three-dimensional geometry materials. Student mistakes identified in Polya's theory include: understanding the problem, planning a solution, implementing the solution plan, and re-examining the obtained solution. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The technique used is an interactive data analysis model from Miles & Huberman, which consists of four steps in analysis activities: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion synthesis. The subjects of this research were 20 students from the Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program. The instruments used in this research are tests in the form of problem-solving questions and non-test instruments, including interviews. The results of the research indicate that many students made errors during the re-examination stage, primarily due to a lack of thoroughness in recording the conclusions from their calculations. For this reason, it is necessary to develop learning methods or models that improve the ability to understand concepts, use a variety of problem-solving strategies, and develop thinking process skills that can help reduce errors in solving mathematical problems.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop context-based interactive PowerPoint media and to evaluate its validity, practicality, and the outcomes of its implementation for junior high school students’ mathematical problem-solving skills. The study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method, adapting the ADDIE development model. The product was evaluated through implementation with a single group using a one-group pretest–posttest design without a control group, involving 30 seventh-grade students of Class VII-C at SMP Negeri 2 Takokak. Data were collected using validation sheets completed by subject-matter and media experts, practicality questionnaires distributed to teachers and students, and mathematical problem-solving tests administered at the pretest and posttest stages. The developed media obtained validity ratings of 97.58% from subject-matter experts and 91.67% from media experts, placing it in the “highly valid” category. Practicality was confirmed by very positive teacher responses of 97.62%, while student responses reached 83.85% in the small-group test and rose to 88.72% in the field test, indicating that the media is very practical. Implementation was also accompanied by an improvement in students’ mathematical problem-solving skills, as shown by an increase in the mean score from 49.85 to 89.69, a 100% mastery rate, and an N-Gain of 0.80, which falls into the “high” category. Based on the results of the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, all students achieved higher posttest scores compared to their pretest scores (Positive Ranks = 30; Negative Ranks = 0). Because the evaluation involved only one group without a control group, the findings indicate an improvement in mathematical problem-solving skills following implementation of the media, but they cannot yet establish a cause-and-effect relationship. Overall, the context-based interactive PowerPoint media developed in this study demonstrates a very high level of validity and practicality, and its implementation was followed by an increase in students’ mathematical problem-solving skills.

Abstract

The PISA 2022 results indicate that Indonesian students’ mathematical performance remains below the OECD average, which calls for instructional innovations that support mathematical problem-solving at the junior high school level. This study examined the use of the Mathematics Educational Game (GEMAS) in supporting students’ mathematical problem-solving skills on linear equations in one variable (LEOV), systems of linear equations in two variables (SLETV), and combined linear equation problems. GEMAS was designed as a game-based learning medium that integrates mathematical tasks with problem-solving stages based on Krulik and Rudnick’s framework, namely read and think, explore and plan, select a strategy, locate and answer, and reflect and extend. This study employed a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design involving 60 students of SMPN 12 Sukabumi in the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. The instruments consisted of a mathematical problem-solving test and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests and normalized gain scores. The results showed statistically significant differences between students’ pretest and posttest scores across the three topics: LEOV, SLETV, and combined problems, with moderate normalized gain scores ranging from 0.3901 to 0.5465. These findings suggest that the use of GEMAS was associated with moderate improvement in students’ mathematical problem-solving skills. The study contributes to the development of mathematics educational games by aligning game-based activities with explicit problem-solving indicators, making GEMAS a potential learning medium to support the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum.
