Abstract

Increased political interests in a nation may lead to isolated citizens and conflicts of interest; so that ethnic minorities are oppressed, such as the Rohingya ethnic group in Myanmar. The Rohingya group as a minority in Myanmar, who fled to save themselves in Southeast Asia, were stranded in Aceh almost every year. The process of rescuing and sheltering the Rohingya refugees in Aceh experienced various problems, and one of them was cultural conflicts between the Rohingya refugees and the Acehnese people. The theory used in this study was a symbolic interaction with a descriptive qualitative method, and to understand the Rohingya issues through the mass media, the researchers used the media as data sources. The results of this study revealed that the Acehnese people were eager to save the Rohingya refugees due to religious similarities. Likewise, the regional government in coordination with the central government was also willing to save them on humanitarian grounds. In addition, UNHCR and volunteers from various organizations and non-governmental organizations were also working to serve and taking care of the needs of the Rohingya refugees. There were cultural conflicts between the Acehnese people and the Rohingya refugees due to cultural differences and mutual misunderstanding between their cultures. However, cultural adaptation could occur properly so that the refugees could survive and be comfortable in their daily lives in refugee camps. Cultural differences were an obstacle in the adaptation of the refugees in Aceh, but the similarity of religion was one of the factors of the cultural adaptation.

Abstract

The cultural encounter between Aceh and Persian traditions occurred through the approach of Sufism during the early spread of Islam in the Nusantara, where Islam was embraced as a socio-cultural ideology by the Acehnese people. The formalization of structural Islamic law in Aceh today has effectively closed off the possibility of religious moderation within the diversity of new cultural expressions. One of these measures is the establishment of Shafi'i school regulations as the main model in Aceh, which impacts the restriction and adjustment of certain traditions and arts that do not align with this school of thought. As a result, intercultural communication becomes an alternative approach to rebuilding mutual understanding, emphasizing the importance of tolerance, and appreciating cultural differences in Indonesia. However, the desired form of moderation has not yet materialized, as evidenced by the emergence of coercive attitudes within a singular religious perspective. Through an intercultural communication approach, this study reveals the moderation attitudes manifested from the cultural encounter between Aceh and Persia. The presence of Persian-style gravestones, still visible in several areas of Pidie (such as Giging, Bungiy, Meunasah Raya Paleue, and Cot Satu), serves as evidence of this cultural exchange. The descriptive-analytical method employed in this research uncovers several findings, including that history demonstrates the intense cultural communication between Persia and the Acehnese people as an expression of religious moderation. However, over time, with the implementation of structural Islam, the attitude of religious moderation has gradually eroded, either directly or indirectly.

Abstract

The existence of the media in social life is essential. Apart from providing a forum for distributing information, the media also play an important role to control the government performance. However, the media often frames reality and at the same time, published news from multiple angles; as this can affect the process of defining the truth constructed in their framing. This study analyzes the news framing published the Kuta Raja rubric, Serambi Indonesia daily in Aceh, especially those contain political and educational message. This present study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with the data collected from July to September 2020. The data were analyzed thematically and analytically in descriptive stages. The results indicate that the Kuta Raja rubric is often f shown by highlighting certain aspects of the news, such as displaying dominant political figures. In contrast, the educational information is not very significantly emphasized. Thus, it is necessary to have a balance in the reconstruction process of an event in order to avoid framing bias.
